- Vernon Chally was the son of Louis and Stella Chally.
He married Lorraine Olson, daughter of Oluf and Mamie
Olson. Lorraine was a registered nurse and also taught
school. They reside in Oakes, ND where Lorraine was
employed by the ND State Health Department. Vernon was
superintendent of Robertson Lumber Company before
purchasing the Oakes, ND lumber yard. They have five
children: Linda Chally Siebert - graduated from NDSU in
marketing and home economics. Possibly lives in Lisbon,
ND. At one time (and maybe still does) owned a store
there called The Gathering Place. Husband's name
unknown. Children: Dana, Kari and Amy. Debbie Chally
graduated from UND in elementary teaching and special
education. Worked for a telephone company. Cindy Chally
graduated from UND in business administration and
possibly resides in Minneapolis - last info I have is
that she worked for McQuay-Perfex there. Brian Chally
graduated from Concordia College and went to law school
at Michigan State at Ann Arbor. Laurie Chally attended
UND and is possibly a court reporter as she also
attended the U of M at Crookston. This is all the
information I have at the present time.

- There has been previous discussion of this now
defunct village. While searching for obituaries, I
stumbled upon the following which explains how the town
was named. Jon Raymond Grand Forks Herald, Sept. 22,
1916 NAME OF OJATA NOW EXPLAINED To the Editor: I have
often wondered how the wayside railway station of Ojata,
just west of Grand Forks, got its name. The name is a
Sioux Indian word meaning the forks of a stream or the
division of water as one goes upstream and how this name
came to attach itself to a place on the prairie has been
a mystery to me. Today Colonel McLaughlin of Washington
gave me this explanation. He said: “In 1878 I had
established the road from Fort Totten to Grand Forks.
Then when James J. Hill was building the railway west
from Grand Forks he asked me to name the first station
west of Grand Forks. He said he expected to build the
railway as far west as the Turtle River at once and the
first station west of Grand Forks would be there. The
survey crossed the river where the water divided,
flowing both south and north. So I gave the place the
Sioux name Ojata. As it happened he got the railway out
only a few miles and there was a halt for some reason
and my name intended for the place where the water
divides attached itself to a locality where there is no
water at all.” A. Beede, Bismark, ND

- I am searching for John E. Engstad and his
descendants. John died in 1937. His wife Mathilda died
August 14, 1943. They had two daughters: Valborg, died
in 1907; and Dagna. Any information on them or any
descendants would be appreciated. John Engstad was one
of the first physicians in Grand Forks and one of the
founders of St. Luke's Hospital. I see his wife,
Mathilda C. Engstad, has a file in the Special
Collections section at the Chester Fritz Library at the
University of ND. I found that information online. Thank
you for any help.
