- My paternal grandfather Bennett Venaas was born in
Grand Forks, ND (Grand Forks County), in 1882. He died
in 1946,in Virginia,MN, before I was born. Family
history is very sketchy. There are siblings that settled
in Williston, ND, California, Orgegon, and Minnesota. I
haven't been able to even find out what my
great-grandparents' names were (Bennett's parents).
Wondering if there are any records in Grand Forks County
for any Venaas families?.

- Grand Forks County, Thompson, Dakota, was the home
for awhile of the following Smith brothers (coming from
Mooretown, Ontario, Canada): Peter, Robert, John, Jr.,
Merrit and Lorenzo. The brothers came to the Dakotas
about early 1880's. Peter, wife Kate Butler, and their
two children returned to Canada about 1900; John, Jr.
and wife Sophia McFarlane returned to Mooretown about
1911; It is believed that the Robert Smith buried
January 19, 1901 in the Thompson Cemetery in Walle Twp,
Grand Forks County, along with his young son, Harrison,
is our Robert. His wife's name was Nellie (last name
unknown). There is also a Merrit Smith, dod April 9,
1924 buried in this same cemetery. From Census records,
his wife is Mary N.(maiden name unknown). In the April
24, 1941 Mooretown, Ontario obituary of John, Jr., it
lists one brother, Lorenzo, Nortk Dakota as surviving. I
have not been able to locate Lorenzo other than his
"first papers for naturalization" in 1890. I am not only
loo! king for information on him and a possible family
descendancy but also for desendants of Robert Smith:
Robert's son, Robert P. Smith was born October 1891 and
died 1962 Thompson, N.D. I have found him listed in the
1920 Census for Allendale Twp. with wife Olivine, age 26
and three children: Dorothy M., age 4; Kenneth P., age 2
and Vivian, age 1. I would like to make contact with
descendants of these children, or them if still living.
Robert P. Smith was the "informat" signing the death
certificate for Merrit Smith who died April 9, 1924, so
I feel there is a connection.
