I'm looking for information and relatives of Rinehart and Bertha(Hanson) Kortness. They were both Norwegian immigrants and were both naturalized 12/9/1910. They lived in Ojata,Grand Forks County,North Dakota. Rinehart is believed to be buried in Brenna Church Cemetery. Thank you..

HANSON, KORTNESS posted by Jon Raymond on Friday, October 6, 2000

Ojata is/was, I believe, a township or small village west of Grand Forks, along US Hiway 2. I know of no church by that name. I would try contacting a Lutheran Church in the area west of Grand Forks; the Special Collections Dept of the Chester Fritz Library at the U of North Dakota in Grand Forks, the ND Historical Society in Bismark, or the Red River Valley Genealogical Society in Fargo. The latter three have web sites..

Thank you for the information..

Information on Rinehart and Bertha (Hanson) Kortness leads me to believe they were buried in a church cemetery in Emerado,Brenna Township,Grand Forks County,North Dakota. They were of Lutheran religion. If there is anyone in or near Emerado that can confirm this,I would greatly appreciate the information. Thank you..

HANSON, KORTNESS posted by Jon Raymond on Saturday, October 7, 2000

Ojata was later known as Stickney, Oakville Township, Grand Forks County. It is just east of Emerado and not far from Arvilla, all along US Hiway 2. You might want to contact Gordon Danner, dodgelte@polarcomm.com. He is the custodian of the Arvilla Township Cemetery records and can be most helpful. If he has no info for you, I'm sure he can give you names/phones for nearby cemeteries. I hope this helps..

I live in the Twin Cities and am unable to do a lookup for you. However, you could try this. Call Mr. Robin Purcells of Memorial Park Cemetery, 701/772-0988. He is very helpful and the records are computerized. The number for Calvary is 701/772-7911. To request a copy of the death certificate, go to vitalrec@state.nd.us. You can order a copy online and they are quite prompt. The two oldest churches in East Grand Forks are Sacred Heart Catholic and Mendenhall Presbyterian. If your ancestor was Lutheran, you have a bigger problem. There are many Lutheran churches in the area. For an obituary, both the Grand Forks Public Library and the Chester Fritz Library, University of ND have web sites and you can order a copy from there. Do not contact the local newspaper, as all of their records were lost in the 1997 Flood..

Thank you for your response, someone found the obit and sent it to me, I hope to find out more about who is buried with him, thanks for the advice..

Noticed the recent messages concerning the town Ojata in Grand Forks County. Coincidentally, I was trying to find any available information about a train wreck that apparently occurred there. The following is a query I tried posting on a Great Northern RR fan's message site: As part of my family history research, I've come across the following statement in an obituary: "… who was killed in the wreck of the Oriental Limited train on The Great Northern near Ojata." I think Ojata is a location in eastern North Dakota, although I haven't been able to find it on current highway maps. I don't know when the mishap occurred, although my guess would be in the 1900-1925 timeframe. If anyone has any details about such an incident, they would be much appreciated. Jerry.

PEDERSON posted by Jostein Molde on Sunday, October 15, 2000

In the year 1888 a party of 4 emigrants left Trondheim, Norway, giving Reynolds, ND, as their destination. That place is in Grand Forks County, to my knowledge. The party consisted of the family head Lorents Pedersen, b. March 4, 1838, wife Lovise, b. Jan. 27, 1854, and their son Arnt, b. Feb. 25, 1876. With them was also a neighbor woman, Inger Anna Eriksen, b. Aug. 4, 1858. They were all born at Aasen, Nord-Trøndelag. I'm writing on behalf of family in Norway, who are looking for descendants of Inger Anna. But information on Lorents and his family will also be appreciated. No other information on their whereabouts in the US is known. Sincerely Jostein Molde Trondheim, Norway

The town of Ojata was located in Grand Forks County. This townsite was founded in 1880 in section 2 and 11 - 151-152 in Oakville Township, 10 miles west of Grand Forks, ND & named Stickney. This name was unpopular with local residents so on 3/6/1883 Charles Hutchinson changed the name to Ojata, after the Sioux word "oz-ate" meaning crossing. A population of 58 was reported in 1890. 45 people were there as late as 1920, but the village failed to develop beyond that date. The post office closed May 1936,& mail now goes to Emerado. The site is abandoned. The Northwest Oriental express (later called Empire Builder then Amtrack)crashed near the town site. Information from the book ND Place Names by D. Wick and information by D Hoverson from Manvel, ND..

I'm seeking information on John McGuire who came to Grand Forks 1n 1889 from Grand Rapids Michigan. He homsteaded in the Manvel district and I'm unable to obtain any records. I have contacted the St. Michael's Catholic church in Grand Forks and they have no information I have wrote letters to St, Thomothy's Church in Manvel but have not received a reply. If there is anyone in the Manvel area who can help me locate records on my grandfather John McGuire born 1828 County Fermanagh Ireland and also William M. Harvey and his Wife Mary Ann Harvey McGuire and their children it would be much appreciated.

Try contacting Memorial Park Cemetery and Calvary Cemetery in Grand Forks, Grand Forks County. Memorial's records are computerized, I don't know about Calvary's. If you have dates of death, try vitalrec@state.nd.us. You can order death/birth certificates online. There are three McGuires listed in the Grand Forks, ND phone book. I also remember McGuires living in East Grand Forks, Polk County, MN, which is across the river. St. Timothy's is a very small parish; it might a while before you have a reply..

MCNEILL, TAGLEY posted by Jon Raymond on Tuesday, October 24, 2000

If the marriage occurred at First Presbyterian in Grand Forks, the church lost all of its records in the 1997 Flood. Your best hope is if someone can go to the County Courthouse in Grand Forks. You could try Sandy Slater at slater@plains.nodak.edu (University of North Dakota) for a free lookup. They can be quite helpful. For birth/death info, try vitalrec@state.nd.us. Certificates can be ordered online and they are prompt. Finally, you might try Chuck Haga at the Minneapolis(MN) Star Tribune; they have a web site. He worked for the GF Herald for many years. If he doesn't remember Andrew, he may be able to direct you to another source..

You are more than welcome, I know how frustrating long distance research is. Actually, I was raised in East Grand Forks, Polk, MN, which is across the river. I would also suggest you try the usgenweb for Polk County, MN, and refer to my posting "East Grand Forks info" of Aug, 2000. The Presbyterian Church there is Mendenhall Presbyterian. Very often, when someone said "Grand Forks (ND)," they meant "East Grand Forks (MN)." If you have any questions, just email me directly..
