- Terri, It would appear we are both studying the
Gormans who were in the Grand Forks area. My great
grandfather Thomas Gorman and children Margaret, James,
John, Henry, Mary, Rose, etc began using the surname
O'Gorman after they arrived in the Grand Forks area in
1881 from Ontario, Canada. Thomas farmed in the Grand
Forks area and his son John O'Gorman ultimately farmed
in the Hillsboro area. Four other Gorman brothers -
John, James, Michael and Edward also arrived in the Red
River Valley in the 1880s from Ontario. John and his
wife Bridget Edwards, after some time in Larimore,
settled in Grand Forks; James and his wife Amelia
Edwards settled in Fargo, Michael and his wife Bridget
Powers settled in East Grand Forks and finally my
grandfather Edward Gorman and his wife Margaret Gorman
(daughter of the above mentioned Thomas) settled in
Moorhead, MN. These four brothers had a sister
Kate/Catherine who is mentioned in their obituaries as
being married to a Fred Stevens. At this point, I do not
believe David Gorman is connected to these two families;
Peter Gorman/O'Gorman, who lived in Grand Forks can be
traced to a family of Gorman/O'Gormans who were from
Renfrew County in Ontario. My Gormans were in Carleton
and Lanark Counties in Ontario. There were other Gormans
- born in Ireland or Canada - who were in Pembina County
in the same time frame. I know nothing of their
families. I don't have much information on the
descendants of John or Michael, but at least a couple of
grandchildren are still in the area. Michael began the
carpentry business in East Grand Forks. In the
information I have thus far, I don't seem to have Hagen
or your other surnames, but that doesn't necessarily
mean anything. Byrne is a surname I recognize from my
research in Canada.

MCGUIRE posted by Rita Meistrell on Friday,

- Many of Manvel, ND area settlers came from Ontario
area. You might be interested in the following:
Originally published in the Almonte Gazette, 11 March,
1898. From the LCGS Newsletter, September & October,
1999. John McGuire, Jr., is a farmer living 3 miles east
of Manvel in Harvey Township, who came here from
Pakenham, Ont in 1882 and bought the place he now lives
on. He raises cattle, hogs, horses, and sheep of
different varieties. The farm of Harvey Bros. includes
Jim, Robert and Ed, living four and one half miles east
of Marvel. They came from Arnprior in 1877 with their
father who was a founder of Harvey Township. He died
about 12 years ago, leaving his family in comfortable
circumstances and all settles in the same district
within a radius of 6 miles. Those that are married and
are parents themselves are John, the eldest, William,
Peter, Mat, Mrs. William Knaus, Manvel, Mrs. John
McDonald, Stoughton and Mrs. Ed O’Brien, Grand Forks.
The younger boys live in the homestead with their
mother. They farm about 1300 aces of land. They raise
beef cattle at a considerable profit on account of their
pasture facilities. Hog raising is also a profitable
industry but their chief pursuit is grain raising. They
own some of the finest horses in the country and are
competent and intelligent horsemen themselves. They boys
at home are industrious and ambitious and no matter what
pleasure or pastime is in the country! , it never
detains them from going home and attending to the
farming business, evidently the cause of their present
financial circumstances. William Harvey, a farmer living
in town and owning 212 acres on the bank of the Marais,
came here with his father in 1877 from Arnprior and owns
a $900 barn with all modern inventions to feed stock.
His residence is beautifully situated in a natural
grove. He raises cattle, horses, hogs and grain. He is
one of the pioneers of Harvey Township and a member of
the school board and a township officer. Matt Harvey is
one of the country’s enterprising farmers, living 7
miles from Manvel on 350 acres of land. He came here
with his parents from Arnprior in 1877 and recently
married one of Manvel’s young ladies, beginning
housekeeping in a 41400 house near the timber on the Red
River. He raises cattle, horses, hogs and grain and some
fine sheep, having imported the last from Australia 3
months ago at a cost of $10 apiece and in conclusion he
is thoroughly provided with a good share of this world’s
wealth.

- Thomas J. Veitch was the sixth son of David and Jane
Taylor Veitch. He was born January 2, 1869, at Lisbon,
New York. He was the twin brother of Winifred Veitch
Lebeau. Thomas was the last son to leave his fathers
farm home in New York State and come to North Dakota,
seeking farm land to establish a home. Soon after his
arrival in 1889, in Grand Forks County he was able to
secure a quarter of land in Section 35 of Mekinock twp.
He lived on this land in a small one room "shack" for
three years. At this time he was able to secure two more
quarters across the road in Chester twp. Sec. 2. After
obtaining this property which was equipped with
buildings, he returned to New York State. He married his
long time "sweetheart" Gertrude G. Paupst on January 29,
1902. They soon returned to North Dakota, arriving in
Emerado in Feb. of 1902. They were met at the train by
George and Jane Veitch. After a visit with them they
went to the farm home that Thomas had prepared for his
bride. Thomas raised grain, cattle, sheep, and all the
other things that went with farming in those days.
Thomas and Gertrude had six children. They were Dorothy,
Elizabeth, Merle, Donald, Gertrude, and Robert. They
were all members of the Presbyterian Church of Emerado.
All of the children were graduates of the Emerado North
Dakota High School. In 1926 they purchased a home in
Emerado. Thomas and Donald continued to farm. Thomas
passed away at the age of 60 in October of 1929.
Gertrude continued to live in Emerado until she sold her
home in 1948 moving to Grand Forks until her death on
April 30, 1962. Dorothy married George W. Hoffman of
Sanish, North Dakota. Elizabeth married Leonard W. Berg.
Merle married Edgar A. Redwing. Donald married Eleanor
Swendseid. Gertrude married Maurice E. Redwing. Robert
married Verna Nelson..
