WADE, Harry Marvin, 77, of Floyd passed away Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at his home. He was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation after thirty one years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Falling Branch United Methodist Church. He leaves behind his loving devoted wife of fifty one years, Mary G. Wade, and his daughter, Nita ("Dawn") Harris Thurman of Roanoke, whose admiration was exceeded only by her love for him. Other survivors include a brother, Bruce Wade, Floyd; two sisters, Nelva Gardner, Floyd, and Betty Howry, Delaware; three grandchildren, Calvin Lee Harris, Mark Harris, and Matthew Harris; one great-granddaughter, Harley Hall; one stepgrandson, Kevin Thurman; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lawrence Nuckolls officiating. Burial will be in Jacksonville Cemetery with military rites by Hillsville V.F.W. Post #1115. Friends may call at the Maberry Funeral Home after 11 a.m. Wednesday where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Flowers would be appreciated or donations may be made to New River Valley Hospice. Mary Edith Goad Wade, 98 of Floyd, was gently received in the arms of Jesus on Friday, January 20, 2023, with her daughter, Dawn by her side. Mom will be reunited with her husband of 53 years, Harry Marvin Wade, her parents Charlie Arthur "Bud" Goad, Josie Ada Evaline Moles Goad, her brother Harry Goad, her sisters Belva Goad Dalton, Carmine "Booty" Goad and grandson Chris Hall. To carry on her legacy are her grandchildren, Calvin Lee Harris, Jr. (Michelle), Mark Harris and Matt Harris. Great grandchildren, Madison, Morgan, Mason, Max, Harley and Cassidy. Mom's legacy of independence, strong work ethic and her spirit will be forever in the hearts of her family. Mary's greatest passion in life was taking care of her family. Mary was a long time member of Falling Branch United Methodist Church. She attended church until her health no longer allowed her to. The church family remained close to her heart. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Angie Sowers officiating. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from Noon until 1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Conway Waters, Jr.; son, James Conway “JC” Waters, III; and parents, Lewis & Elizabeth Showman Ryman. Sylvia enjoyed spending time with family as well as traveling and volunteering. She also enjoyed flowers and yardwork. She is survived by her daughters & sons-in-law, Lori & Steve Summers and Melissa & Robert Spence; grandchildren, Josh Spence (Crystal), Aaron Summers (Meredith), Jeremiah Spence (Racheal), Adam Summers (Darla), Jacob Summers (Crystal), and Jonathan Spence; great-grandchildren, Chloe, Corben, Olivia, Owen, Mia and Lacey Spence and Palmer, Barrett, Julian, and Ainsley Summers; brother & sister-in-law, Cecil & Wilma Ryman; sister, Barbara Ryman; sisters-in-law, Sandra Weatherholtz (Shelton), Gwen Hinkle (Earl), and Kim Diehl (Dennis); and numerous nieces and nephews. Billy Coleman Weddle, 80, of Salem, passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Hallie Weddle, of Floyd, Va. Billy is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Geraldine. Also, his two sons, Mike and wife, Lynn, of Missoula, Montana and Mark and wife, Debbie of Salem, Va.; one granddaughter, Samantha; one great grandson, Landen; one sister, Frances Lee and husband Kyle, of Floyd, Va.; numerous sister in laws, brother in laws, nieces, and nephews. He also leaves behind two lifelong friends, Jim Casteel and Dock Sweeney. Billy was a faithful member of Community Church and enjoyed his Tuesday Morning Men's Bible Study, and Sunday School Class. He proudly served in the United States Navy for four years, obtaining the Rank of Gunner Mate Third Class. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8p.m. on Friday, November 21, 2014 at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem, VA. Funeral Services will be held at 11a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Lotz Salem Chapel with Pastors Tom McCracken and Dan Carawan officiating. Interment will be private in Jacksonville Cemetery. Geraldine Belcher Weddle, 83, of Salem, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2020. She grew up in Floyd, resided in Salem, and had a full career in banking. She and Billy enjoyed traveling in retirement, cruising Alaska, visiting the fall colors in New England, and making an extensive cross-country road trip, visiting the National Parks and other attractions. She also enjoyed going on trips with her senior group at Community Church and she and Billy enjoyed Gospel singing. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Billy Weddle. She is survived by her sons, Michael Weddle and wife, Lynn, Mark Weddle and wife, Debbie; granddaughter, Samantha Weddle; and great grandson, Landen; siblings, Nancy Bonomo, Pauline Stago, Margaret and Sonny Quesinberry, Brenda and Sam Hancock, Evelyn and Al Campbell, Lane Belcher and Robert and Debbie Belcher. Graveside visitation beginning at 10 a.m. and services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2020, at Jacksonville Cemetery in Floyd. Please dress casual and bring a chair. She was born on December 22, 1925, to the late Clark and Ava Bolt. Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Collins; sisters, Adele Thornton, Ethel McAlexander and Carolyn Brewster; and brother, Marvin Bolt. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Earl George Irwin; sister, Delora (Roop) Black; stepdaughter, Earle Irwin and Bob Lineberry; stepson, Dwight Irwin and Stacy Lempka; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Irene Wheeler; grandchildren, Shaun Jenks and Erika, Richard Irwin-Miller, Chauncey, Eli and Carson Irwin, Kyle and Nick Wheeler; great grandchildren, Hailey Jenks, Hunter Jenks and Makynzee; niece and her husband, Joyce and Rickey Sims; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Barbara Anne Whitaker

Barbara Anne Whitaker, 76 of Floyd, died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, March 5, 2017 at her home after a lengthy illness. Barbara was born July 1, 1940 in Indianapolis, and after graduating from high school in Eminence, Indiana, she pursued a career in business working as Assistant to the Director of Nursing at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and later as Executive Secretary at Rielly Tar and Chemical.  After marrying and starting a family Barbara chose to be a full time mother to her four children.  After moving to Floyd Virginia, Barbara worked at Heritage Hall and at the Forestry Department at Virginia Tech.  Her final working years were spent at several clothing manufactures in Floyd.

Barbara’s home was always open to friends and family.  Her cooking skills were well known as well as her love of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  A true servant of God, Barbara will be remembered always.

She is survived by her husband of  54 years, David Whitaker; sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Joyce Whitaker, Josh and Ashley Whitaker, Levi and Jennifer Whitaker; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Alvin Collette; grandchildren, Kristen Whitaker, Laura Whitaker, Mary Whitaker, Raven Whitaker, Emily Whitaker, Levi Collette, Joshua Whitaker, John Whitaker, Aaron Whitaker, Jacob Whitaker, Thad Whitaker; great-grandchildren, Anthony, Nevaeh, Rielly, Zoey, Macsamus, Zanetta, Varion, Xavier; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tommie and Judy Emberson, Rodney and Eleen Emberson; sister and brother—law, Mary and Jim Romminger.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 10, 2017 at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating with interment in the Jacksonville Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the funeral home.

Mary M. Keys White FLOYD On Saturday, July 5, 2014, an angel quietly took our dear one away at the age of 78. She was born March 2, 1936, to the late Granville and Geraldine Keys. At an early age she confessed her faith in Christ and remained a dedicated and faithful Christian as long as health permitted. She was united in marriage to the late Herbert C. White Sr. To this union two children were born, Master Sgt. Herbert C. White Jr. (Retired) Crestview, Fla., and Vandella White-Tucker (David) Powhatan, Va. Those left to cherish her memories are three grandsons, Herbert C. White III, Daniel L. Tucker and Dondre M. Tucker; one granddaughter, Tatyana White; two sisters, Henrietta Gibson, Ferrum, Virginia, and Ann Meyhew, Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; one brother, Frank Keys, Washington, D.C.; and a host of special nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Gardner Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Sheila Thomas officiating. Interment followed in Jacksonville Cemetery. Jane Slusher Williams, a resident of Floyd County since birth, with the exception of several years in Garrett Park, Maryland, and more recently Snyder Nursing Home in Salem, passed away on November 3, 2020 at the age of 85. Jane is survived by her brother & sister-in-law, Lane & Mina Slusher of Kansas; special sister-in-law, Nadine Slusher of Floyd; son & daughter- in-law, Michael K. & Jackie Williams of Canton, GA; daughter & son-in- law, Teresa W. & Eddie Worth of Floyd; grandchildren, Jason M. Oury of Newport, TN, Jessica K. Oury Kellogg (David) of Floyd, Jacob Estrada, husband of the late granddaughter Jordan Oury Estrada of Newport, TN, Aaron Williams, and Claire Williams of Canton, GA; great-grandchildren, Colton Ryder Oury and Aurora Jane Estrada of Newport, TN. She was also blessed with many nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, and cousins. Jane was preceded in death by her parents, George & Callie Slusher; husband, Deward T. Williams; brother, Maurice T. Slusher; and sister, Betty Mannon. In younger days, Jane was a bank manager, a Camp Bright Star cook, nurse, and mom to a lot of summer camp kids that missed their parents. More recently, Jane was a devoted volunteer at Angels in the Attic, a hard working gardener and yard perfectionist, proud grandmother, and still a great cook! Jane enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren with her baking, as she was always baking, and whatever activities they wanted to do. She enjoyed making crafts including growing her own gourds to create beautiful bowls, making quilts, learning how to make shaker wooden baskets and even painting. She loved a craft show. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 8, 2020 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s Society and are greatly appreciated.    Masks are required inside of the funeral home for those wishing to attend services. Peggy Gray Wirt, age 80, of Willis, born August 29, 1939, passed away Friday, June 19, 2020 following a brain tumor. Born in Suffolk, Peggy was the daughter of the late Hurley Roland Gray and Ruby Futrell Gray, she was a resident of Suffolk and Chesapeake before moving to Floyd County.
Peggy was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother affectionately known as "Nonna", and sister, she was preceded in death by her brother, H.R. Gray, Jr. and her sister, Vivian Inez Lassiter. She leaves to cherish her memory a beloved husband of 61 years, Fred Wirt, two sons, Jonathan Wirt (Lesley), Christopher Wirt (Rebecca), a daughter, Jennifer Coley (Bobby); a granddaughter, Anna; four grandsons, Connor, Alexander, Ryan, and Michael; two sisters, Rachel Richards and Ruth Dunn, and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
A longtime member of Floyd Baptist Church, Peggy had been a faithful follower of Christ and active in ministries of the church. She greatly enjoyed quilting, clogging/Scottish country dancing, singing, and reading. She was very talented with her sewing and cooking. Peggy always shared a smile and conversation with everyone she met. She was loved and will be greatly missed.
A funeral service celebrating her life will be held on Monday June 22, 2020 at 11am at Gardner Funeral Home, 202 E. Oxford St. Floyd, VA 24091. Burial will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery, Floyd. (The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.) In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Floyd Baptist Church, P.O.
