James Elwood (Peanut) Weddle, 78, of Hillsville, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2011 at his home.

He was preceded in death by his wife Carleen Weddle; daughter, Priscilla Caviness; parents, Howard and Lillian Sutphin Weddle; brothers, Joe Howard Weddle and Gerald Ray Weddle.

Mr. Weddle is survived by three daughters and sons in-law, Rebecca and Tom Heaton of Hillsville, Linda and Darrell Russ of Lexington, NC, and Rachel Gentry of Mt. Airy, NC.; two sons and daughters in-law, Jeff and Rita Ann Spivey of Garner, NC and Lance and Debbie Spivey of Reidsville, NC; fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren, and his many special friends.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with Pastor Jeff Pickett officiating. Burial will follow in the Wilkinson Memorial Cemetery. The Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.

Bonnie Marlene Weddle Widener, 79, of Fancy Gap, Va., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax, Va. She was born September 21, 1931, at Martin Memorial Hospital in Mt. Airy, N.C., the only daughter of the late Rawden Weddle and Emma Hill. She grew up in the Brookmore community of Fancy Gap where she developed a special lifelong circle of friends. At the age of 14, she and her parents moved into the renowned Sidna Allen Home where she lived for most of her life and later became a devoted tour guide and storyteller of the home's rich history. She graduated from Hillsville High School in 1948 and went on to attend college at Radford University and National Business College where she was the editor of the school's newspaper. She then spent many years working for the Virginia Department of Transportation until the birth of her children. 
She was an active member of the Hillsville Chapter No. 71 Order of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron and held many other offices during her more than 50 years of membership and service. She was a columnist for The Carroll County News where she wrote the acclaimed "Fancy Gap Happenings" for more than 25 years. She was very active in the community serving in the Junior Woman's Club, Girl Scouts, 4-H and various cancer support organizations. She was also an active member of Fancy Gap Methodist Church for nearly 60 years. She loved to laugh and had a wonderful sense of humor and always had a big smile that could light up a room. She never met a stranger and her lively spirit was an inspiration to all who knew her. 
She was married to her devoted husband, Hubert S. "Bert" Widener, for more than 51 years. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Stanley and Lisa Widener, of Fancy Gap, Va.; and daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Skip Wood, of Alexandria, Va. She was the proud grandma of Molly, Campbell and Branson who gave her so much love and joy. 
The family would like to extend its deepest appreciation to the nurses and staff at Waddell Nursing Home in Galax, Va., where they took special care to make sure she always felt like family. 
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 14, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville, Va. Services will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at Sky View Baptist Church. The body will lie-in-state at the church one hour prior to the service. The burial will follow at the Webb Sky View Cemetery in Fancy Gap, Va. 
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Fancy Gap Methodist Church Building Fund, 578 Old Appalachian Trail, Fancy Gap, Va. 24328 or to the American Cancer Society , c/o Iva Easter, 1235 Beaver Dam Road, Hillsville, Va., 24343.

Nannie Belle Brady, 77, of Tazewell, passed away at Clinch Valley Medical Center on Monday, February 25, 2013. Ms. Brady was born in Carroll County to the late Keller Weddle and Mary Utt Weddle. Survivors include Verlyn Brady of Hillsville; her son, Kenneth R. Brady of Centerville, VA, daughter and son-in-law, Janet B. and James McDonald of North Tazewell; brother and sister-in-law Joe and Alta Weddle of Hillsville; sister, Lucille Brady of Ararat; and grandchildren, Brennon McDonald and Courtney McDonald. Verlyn F. Brady, 87 of Hillsville, passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at his home. Mr. Brady was born in Carroll County to the late Thomas and Fannie Quesenberry Brady. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his siblings and their spouses, Arlis Brady, Melvin and Margaret Brady, Donald and Mary Jane Brady, and Lorraine and Frank Nicely. Survivors include his son, Kenneth Brady of Centerville; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and James McDonald of Tazewell; brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Virginia Brady of Laurel Fork; sister and brother-in-law, Lila and Julius Branscome of Woodbridge; sister-in-law, Lucille Brady of Fancy Gap; grandchildren and spouses, Brennon and Faith McDonald and Courtney and Jeff Murray; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Onevo Idell Shelton Weddell, 86, of 446 Spencer Mill Road, Hillsville, VA, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2008, at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax, VA. Mrs. Weddell was born October 27, 1921, in Carroll County, VA, to the late Harley and Alverta Semones Shelton. She was a homemaker and a member of Pilot View Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Jeanette W. Ayers of Laurel Fork, VA; three grandchildren and two spouses, Juron G. and Cathy Ayers of Cartersville, GA, Karen and Roger DeKraker of Scottsdale, AZ, and Michele R. Ayers and fiancé, Daniel Marshall, of Mount Airy; two great-grandchildren, Brandon Juron Ayers and Heather Nicole Ayers, both of Cartersville, GA; and a brother, Troy R. Shelton of Lowgap. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Weddell was preceded in death by her husband, Layton H. Weddell; a sister, Verlie Willard; and two brothers, W.D. Shelton and Victor L. Shelton. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Clarence Marshall, and burial will follow in the Pilot View Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Ms. Alpha Weddle Martin, 96, of Vinton, VA, passed away Saturday morning, September 28, 2013, at Berkshire Health and Rehabilitation Center in Vinton, VA. Ms. Martin was born May 26, 1917, in Carroll County, VA, the only child born to the late John and Maude Puckett Weddle. She was a homemaker and a member of The Upper Room Church. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Joyce M. Rippey of Roanoke, VA; two grandsons, John W. Rippey, III and his wife, Candace, of Roanoke, VA, and David W. Rippey and his wife, Crystal, of Vinton, VA; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Ms. Martin was preceded in death by a son, John W. Rippey, Jr. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. Burial will follow in the Puckett Family Cemetery in Hillsville, VA. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home.

Belle Plummer Fariss, age 69, resident of Brownsburg, died June 27 at the Robert Long Hospital in Indianapolis where she had been a patient 18 days.

Funeral services were last Sunday at the Jones & Matthews Mortuary at Brownsburg with burial at Lizton. The Rev. Lester Yearick of Brownsburg officiated.

A native of Virginia, she had lived at Brownsburg less than a year and had previously lived north of Pittsboro. Her husband, James, died in 1953.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Georgia Rigdon and Mrs. Bernice Elmore, both of Brownsburg; two sons, William C. of Brownsburg and John T. of Indianapolis; four sisters, Mrs. Bruce Jackson and Mrs. Lillie Cox, both of Brownsburg; Mrs. Dora Goodlan and Willa Nester, both of Plainfield; also, a brother, Earl Weddle, of Brownsburg.
