Born Oct. 29, 1910, in Floyd, Va., she was the daughter of the late Arthur Emanuel Epperly and the late Sally Lou (DeHart) Epperly. She was also preceded in death by her husband, the late George Martin Harris, on Nov. 7, 1997; and a son, David Harris, on Feb. 22, 1997. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Harris was a member of Wiley Ford Church of the Brethren. Surviving are her son, Paul Arthur Harris, and wife, Jo (Petenbrink), Westminster, Md.; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Harris, Westminster; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., with the Rev. Paul E. Dietz and the Rev. Benny Brakeall officiating. Interment will be in Greenmount Cemetery. 1998 Burial: Green Mount Cemetery, Cumberland, Alleghany Co., MD.

Dorothy Vernon Epperly, of 603 Mulberry Road, Martinsville, died Sunday,
December 20, 1998, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born in Montgomery County on August 7, 1910, to Malinda Weddle and I. L.
Epperly, she was raised in Floyd County where her father was superintendent
of schools. She graduated from Averett College and
Westhampton College majoring in history and mathematics. She taught school in
Floyd and in Martinsville. She and the late S. L. Goodman came to
Martinsville when he purchased the then weekly local newspaper, THE BULLETIN.
Preceded in death by her daughters, Linda Lewis and Nancy Goodman, she is
survived by one daughter, Dorothy Lewis (Mrs. D.H.) of Martinsville; one
sister Carrie Witt Cabell of Richmond; four grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren. A long time supporter of the
arts, Mrs. Goodman worked on the Docent Guild of Piedmont Arts Association
and worked for many years on the Civic Music Association. She has been an
active member of the General Joseph Martin Chapter of the DAR, serving as
Regent in 1945. She served as president and secretary of the Mildred Lee
Chapter of the UDC and has been a district chair. One of the original
telephone workers for the local Contact, she answered the very first call
made to them. She was a member of the Beaver Creek Garden Club. For 60 years
a member of the Current Events Club, Mrs. Goodman held all offices, currently
as parliamentarian. A lifelong Baptist, Mrs. Goodman was a 60 year member of
First Baptist of Martinsville. She taught Sunday school for more than 40
years, currently in the Olivia Keesee Class, was
several times president of the Woman's Missionary Organization, and for 20
years served as clerk of the Henry County Baptist Association. Serving on the
staff of the Sue Martin McCabe Library, she organized a mending committee
teaching the repair and preservation of books and Bibles. A memorial service
was held at First Baptist at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 1998. Family at

Epperly Witt Cabell,
92 of Richmond, died December 10, 2004. She was born in Floyd County, Va.,
November 25, 1912. She was educated at Radford State Teachers College (now
Radford University) and Trinity College (now Duke University). She was the
third grade teacher at St. Christopher's School from 1954 to 1977, and
operated Mrs. Witt's Swimming School for over 30 years from her residence on
Peachtree Boulevard. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Daniel
Witt, and her second husband, Robert G. Cabell; and is survived by her three
sons: David Weddle Witt, John Hunton Witt, and
Daniel Witt Jr.; and her five granddaughters: Whitney Witt, Ryland Woodard,
Susan Anderson, Carter Davidson, and Alice Witt. Mrs. Cabell was a former
member of The Country Club of Virginia, The Woman's Club and St. James
Episcopal Church. A memorial service will be held Monday, December 13, at 3
p.m. in St. James Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends
immediately following the service at the church. Private interment Hollywood
Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Department for
the Blind and Vision Impaired, Voice of Virginia, or St. Christopher's Lower
