Mrs. Nettie Dobbins Helton, 83, died early Friday morning in the Skyline Manor Nursing Home, Floyd.

Born in Floyd County, she was a member of Jordan's Chapel United Methodist Church, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving are three sons, K. Scotty Dobbins,. Douglas G. Dobbins, and Curtis L. Dobbins, all of Dublin, six grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren.

The funeral will be Sunday at 2 pm from Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Thornspring Cemetery. Visiting will be Saturday afternoon, and the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral' Home.

Prominent Farmer Dies In Hospital

Giles Gordon Dobbins Jr., prominent Pulaski County farmer, died early Friday morning in Pulaski Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Floyd County, the son of the late Giles Gordon Dobbins Sr, and Virginia Scott Dobbins. He is survived by his wife, Mrs Nettie Reed Dobbins, three sons, Kemper S. Dobbins, Douglas G. Dobbins, and Curtits L. Dobbins, all of Pulaski; two daughters, Mrs Frank Gilley, Pulaski; Mrs. Eugene Doss, Goldsboro, NC; two sisters, Miss Grace Dobbins, Floyd, VA; Mrs. Myrtle Byrne, Winston Salem, NC; six grand children. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p. m. from the Thornspring Methodist Churchildren with the Rev. Sam Barnes officiating, assisted by the Rev. Virgil Anderson. Burial will follow in the Thornspring Cemetery. The body will be removed from Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Fuheral Home to the residence Saturday at noon.

William Bruister "Bruce" Helton, 86, of Pulaski died Friday in a Richmond hospital. Born Aug. 23 1894, in Pulaski County, he was a veteran police officer for the Town of Pulaski having retired in 1958 after 28 years of service. He was a member of Jordans Chapel United Methodist Church. He is survived by his widow, Nettie Reed Helton of Pulaski; three daughters, Mrs. James R Glenn of Pulaski, Mrs. William Gravely of Richmond, and Mrs Hugh Harris of Winston-Salem, NC; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Stevens Funeral Chapel in Pulaski with the Rev. Julian Walton officiating. Burial will follow in Thornspring Cemetery. Reed; one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Archie Light, Christiansburg; a grandson and his wife, Jackie and Ellen Akers of Floyd; and a great-granddaughter, Tracy Akers, Floyd. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Sam Han cock and the Rev. Roy Turpin, with burial in Sunset Cemetery. Effie Mae Goins Reed, 87, of Christiansburg, Va., passed away on Tuesday, June 15, 2010. She was born on April 14, 1923, to the late Posie Flinchum and Annie Goins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Martin Reed. She is survived by her sister, Ruth Blackwell; brother, Harvey Flinchum; stepdaughter, Joyce and Archie Light; nieces, Sharon Flinchum and Lori Helvey; nephews, Gary Blackwell, Doyle Flinchum, and David Flinchum; grandchildren, Jackie Akers and Ellen; greatgrandchildren, Tracy Whitlock and Jason; two great-greatgrandchildren; and special pet companion, "Precious." The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 17, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, June 18, 2010, at the Horne Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will be held at Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg, Va. Margaret Lee Reed Turner, 66, passed away on Saturday, April 17, 2010. Mrs. Turner was preceded in death by her parents, Asa Lee and Amanda Lee Reed, and two sisters, Betty Pratt and Elsie Evans. She is survived by: her husband, Curtis Garl Turner; one son, Curtis Grant Turner; one daughter, Marnie Suzanne Turner; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Billy Pratt; Janet and Lewis Turner; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Gary and Phyllis Reed; Jerry and Joanie Reed; and several nieces and nephews. Shaver, Jerry Dennis of Danville, Va. and formerly of Midlothian, Va., died Sun-day April 6, 2008 at Danville Regional Medical Center. "Gramps", as he was called, was born March 4, 1917 in Cowen, WV., the seventh child of the late Jesse L. and Dora Koon Shaver. He was one of 11 children. "Gramps" was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from 1935 until 1938 and again from 1940 until 1945. While serving, he obtained the rank of 1st Sergeant, prior to being honorably discharged. He was a member of Pioneer Baptist Church in Richmond, Va. He is survived by his wife, Mae Shaver, of Danville, who he married on September 8, 1941. He is also survived by his son, Jerry L. Shaver and wife, Barbara, of Danville; one grandson, Jerry E. Shaver, of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; one granddaughter, Jennifer Clatterbuck and her husband Tracey; and three great-grandchildren, Kate, Luke and Emily Clatterbuck, all of Danville. He is also survived by one brother, Harley W. Shaver and wife, Elsie of Chester, Va; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, nine siblings; and one son, Ray Edward Shaver. He lived the majority of his life in the Richmond, Va. area. He had various occupations, as dairyman, mechanic and small business owner, before being employed by the U.S. Postal System. He retired in 1979 as a superintendent of the Highland Springs, Va. Post office. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, who after retirement, became a self taught artist. Family will receive friends Thursday April 10 from 12 to 2 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where a service will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Interment to follow at Pioneer Baptist Church. SHAVER, Mae, of Danville, Va., and formerly of Midlothian, Va., died Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at Piney Forest Health and Rehabilitation Center, just six days short of her 91st birthday. "Grandma," as she was called, was born August 21, 1921 in Floyd County, Virginia. She was a member of Pioneer Baptist Church, Richmond, Va. She married Jerry D. Shaver on September 8, 1941. They were married for 67 years prior to his death in 2008. She is survived by her son, Jerry L. Shaver and wife, Barbara of Danville; one grandson, Jerry E. Shaver and wife Heather of Pittsburg, Calif.; one granddaughter, Jennifer Clatterbuck, her husband, Tracey; and three great- grandchildren, Kate, Luke and Emily Clatterbuck all of Danville. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, one sister; and one son, Ray Edward Shaver. Visitation will be held at 2 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 19, 2012 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Maylon Reed; and brothers and sisters, Charlie Dickerson, Roy Dickerson, Clarence Dickerson, James Dickerson, Mandy Saunders, and Ethelyne Dickerson.

Survivors include her children, Norma and Robbie Sebastian, Kenny Reed, Doug Reed, Sandra and John Dillon, all of Bassett, and April Reed, of Blue Ridge Nursing Center, Stuart; four grandchildren; and sisters, Essie Goad, of Henry, Va., and Rosie Akers, of Blue Ridge Nursing Center, Stuart.

Mabel Pearl Cox Reed, 82, of Floyd, Va., the Alum Ridge community , passed away Friday evening, November 13, 1992, at Camelot Hall Nursing Home in Blacksburg.

She was born in Floyd Co., August 17, 1910, a daughter of Zackriah "Zack" Taylor and Eliza Ellen Reed-Cox. She was a united in marriage in Floyd County, March 14, 1934 to Dewey Taylor Reed, who was born on February 13, 1908 in the Alum Ridge community to William Reed & Isabelle Reed-Reed.

She was a member of the Pleasant Valley Church of the breather in the Alum Ridge community where she resided with her husband, Dewey T. Reed, who survives, and dear friends, Roy and Jaunita Turpin.

Also surviving are: seven sisters, Ocie Ellen Cox Dulaney of Troutville, Rosie May Cox Clay of Floyd, Eulala Elsie Cox Dickerson and Edith "Ilene" Cox Hylton, both of Willis, Clarice Elizabeth Cox Smith of Indian Valley, Dorcas Elaine Cox and Lois Jean Cox, both of Floyd; also, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren with Rev. Carl Ratcliff officiating. Interment was in Duncan Chapel Community Cemetery. Arrangements handled by Wood Funeral Home of Floyd.

Oakley Thurman "O.T." Reed, Jr., 85, of Goodview, went to be with the Lord Sunday, September 5, 2010. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Troop "D" 87th Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron and fought in the Battle of the Bulge and other points in Europe. He was retired from General Electric after 32 years of service. He was a member of Grace and Truth Baptist Church for many years. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Pauline Naglac and Mildred Turner.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Opaline "Opie" Burnette Reed; son, Bruce Daniel "Dan" Reed and wife, Andrea, of Goodview; daughter, Donna R. Underwood and husband, Stephen, Sr., of Bedford County; grandchildren, Jessica Underwood, Stephen Underwood, Jr. and wife, Brenda, Chad Reed and wife, Melissa, Sarah Ross and husband, Daniel; great-grandsons, Stephen Underwood, III and Jesse Thurman Underwood; sister, Geneva Snyder, of Vinton; special niece, Trena Lewis, of Roanoke and other nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at Oakey's Vinton Chapel 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2010 with the Rev. Dean King and the Rev. Fred Fryar officiating. Interment with military honors to follow at Mt. View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Oakey's Vinton Chapel.
