Occurs Crystal Lake, Jan. 20 - The death this morning of Mrs. Okla Martin, 38, brought the number of deaths in the Martin family to three for the past four days from a disease physicians diagnosed as severe hemorrhagic flu, a form considered rare in these sections. The schools of Crystal Lake were closed yesterday. Another Martin child and two other Crystal Lake victims of the disease are in the Irish hospital at Forest City for treatment. Eight physicians from Garner, Britt and Forest City have been called in on the case and a third nurse was called last night to aid in the care of the patients. Raymond Martin, 4 months of age, died Tuesday and was buried Wednesday afternoon. Roscoe Martin, 4, died and funeral services for him were held this afternoon. Mrs. Martin first became ill Tuesday. A 14 year old daughter of the Martin family, who became ill Wednesday, is in a critical condition at Forest City. Eugene McFarland, Crystal Lake, victim of the disease, is improving at Irish hospital and improvement was also reported today in the condition of Ceola Helland of Crystal Lake, who is suffering a light form of disease. According to Dr. T. J. Irish, the victims suffer hemorrhages under the skin and other places in the body. The cases at Crystal Lake have been unusually severe. The board of health, in addition to ordering the schools closed, prohibited other public meetings. Mr. Martin is employed in road work on the county. Other children of the Martin family who are not ill have been taken to other homes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mason City Globe Gazette - January 24, 1933 Page 8 4 Members of Martin Family, Crystal Lake, Buried Side by Side Crystal Lake, Jan. 24 - The body of Raymond Martin, who was buried Wednesday, was dug up yesterday and buried near the double grave made for Raymond and Hazel Martin. Mrs. Oak Martin and Roscoe Martin were buried in a double grave Saturday.
