Born July 20, 1916, in Narrows, son of the late Elbert Dove and Fannie Elizabeth Thompson. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the European Theatre as a Staff Sergeant. He was a Chartered Life Underwriter, Class of 1963, and retired from the Shenandoah Life Insurance Company. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church where he was the Chairman of the Council on Ministries and a teacher of the Builder's Sunday School Class for over 25 years. He was an active volunteer for The Rescue Mission and Meals on Wheels. His grandsons were his pride and joy. Surviving are his wife, Margaret H. Thompson; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Joni Thompson, David and Patricia Thompson; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Fred Frank, Lisa and Jeffrey Shawver; grandsons, Stephen, Channing, Allen and Joseph Thompson, Adam and Justin Frank, Eric and Matthew Shawver; step grandsons, Edward and Thomas Dickenson; step granddaughter, Kimberly Rhodes and her daughter, Ashley. Also surviving are brothers, Herbert H. Thompson, Jerry L. Thompson; sisters, Louise T. Bain, Leona T. Willett and Frances T. Boyd. The family asks that memorials be made to World Hunger, c/o Central United Methodist Church, Salem, or a charity of your choice. The family will receive friends at Lotz Funeral Home, Salem Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, September 8, 1995, Sherwood Burial Park followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church. The family would like to thank all of Ray's doctors and nurses at Lewis-Gale Clinic, all of the staff at Lewis-Gale Hospital on 6 West, and friends and relatives for their many, many acts of kindness and concern during his illness. Thompson, 84, of Smith Mountain Lake, passed away Monday, October 21, 2013. He was born in Christiansburg, a son of the late Elbert D. Thompson and Fannie Woolwine Thompson, and had also resided in Indiana, North Carolina and Michigan prior to returning to Virginia. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War and was a 1956 graduate of Virginia Tech, earning a degree in industrial engineering. He was employed in the glass industry, working his way up the ladder from his beginnings with PPG in 1956 to his retirement in 1997 as President and CEO of Ball Foster Glass Company, and was co-founder of Heye America, a joint venture with Germany. He was a member of Christ Community Church in Penhook, and was an avid golfer, enjoyed tennis, drawing, painting and traveling. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by infant twin sons; a grandson, John Thompson; eight brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, October 25, 2013, at Central United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kristin Holbrook will officiate. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. Alzheimer's Association , P.O.
