The Roanoke Times & World News Thursday May 12, 1938

The funeral for Horatio Seymour Howard 65 who died yesterday morning in a local hospital following an illness of several months was conducted at the Baptist church at Floyd at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon. Interment was in the Floyd Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Dr. J. M. Harmon, Judge John Burwell, Green Proffitt, G. W. Ratliff, Joseph Proffitt, and Dr. Glenn Miles Cunduff.

1927 Applied & Granted Membership in the Sons of the American Revolution: Gr Grandson of Peter Howard who served in the 5^th VA Regt 1778 with reenlistment Dec of same year for the duration of the war. Also included documentation that Peter’s father, William Howard, son of Lord Howard, Earl of Carlisle, York Co., England, immigrated to America in 1783 after marrying in opposition to his parents wished. He settled in New York City & entered into the manufacturing business. He states William made munitions for the American Army & an iron chain that was placed across the Hudson River at WestPoint to keep the British vessels from passing up the river. He fled with his family into New Jersey when the British captured New York. Later, being advised by the Colonial Government, he removed to the Shenandoah Valley in VA. He was engaged with the Fredericksburg Iron Works where he again entered into the making of guns & cannons for the Continental Army. It was after the war he removed to Montgomery Co., VA, became a member of the Baptist Church, and later a minister of same church until his death. He is buried in an old cemetery near Riner, Montgomery Co., VA. Grover uses as his sources “War Records, Richmond. VA. Auditor of Accounts Ledger 18 page 118.” Also noted he has “the same ancestry as Mrs. Ola Howard Briggs”. Grover filed his application from Cabell Co., WVA.

5.  Description:
This is a typical Southern Mansion, with its  large columns, Colonial style architecture, conservatory, spacious lawn, servants' quarters, smoke-house, and old fashioned furniture.

6.  Historical Significance:
Dr. Thomas Henry Howard was a direct descendant of Lord Howard of England and of William Howard, Earl of Carlisle, and his ancestors settled in Virginia before the Revolutionary  War.  He was connected with Washington, Ball, Greene, Lane and other noted families. He was a practicing physician in Floyd County for fifty one years and died at the age of seventy five.  He graduated from Jefferson  Medical College, Philadelphia, Penna., in 1861. During the War between the  States he served as a surgeon in Pickett's Brigade of Armistead's Division and was with his command during the battles of Drewery's Bluff, Seven Pines, Fair  Oaks, Cold Harbor and Gettysburg. Colonel Joseph Howard owned many slaves, and he had about fifteen of them to play during his meal hour.

Captain  Henry Lane, one of the owners of this home, started to the War dressed in a white outfit, with a white plume on his hat. He told his family good-bye, and they said they would never see him again, and they did not. He was killed shortly afterwards and is buried in the old family cemetery in Floyd.

There is a suite of furniture in the house, beautifully carved, which was bought with  $100 in gold which was hidden in the garden under a bed of flowers to keep raiding parties of Union Soldiers from getting it during the War between the  states. The silver ware was hidden under an old setting hen in the barn, deep down in the hay. The soldiers took the hen and eggs but did not find  the silver ware. Mrs. Howard has in her possession the will of Moses  Dickerson, made in 1817. He gave his body to the ground and his soul to God. To his son he gave a dollar "and that is all." To his son-in-law he gave a sheep and a pig "and that is all". He left his estate to his wife, Jemima.

Mrs. Maude L. Howard, the present owner, is a musician and has  composed music. One of her compositions is entitled: "Sunrise on the  Alleghanies". Mrs. Howard is a twin sister of Mrs. Carrie Howard Dobyns, who is also a musician and composer.

Dr. John Stuart once lived in this mansion. He was a brother of General J. E. B Stuart, the famous leader of the Confederate Cavalry.
