J. SOWERS DIES AT DAUGHTER'S HOME
Death Of Old Resident Occurred Suddenly Friday; Funeral Monday
     James M. Sowers, a resident of Menard county throughout most of his life died suddenly at the home of his daughter Mrs. E. L. Hodges in this city (Tallula) Friday evening Mar. 23 at the age of 78 years. He and Mrs. Hodges were sitting at the table eating the evening meal when, without warning, he slumped forward in his chair and was dead when Dr. Newcomer, hastily summoned, arrived at the house. He had been in declining health for some time, but still his condition was not regarded as serious.
     Mr. Sowers was born on on Sep. 22, 1856 in Floyd County, Va, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sowers. A short time later the family moved to Roanoke, and while he was still very young his parents died and he was reared through childhood by his grandmother, "Aunt Polly" Spangler. In 1888 he came to Illinois and engaged in farming, a vocation which he followed through the greater part of the remainder of his life. He lived near Tallula for many years, later moving to Texas where he lived for many years and then returned to Menard county where, with the exception of short periods of time, he spent the remainder of his years. He was a farmer of more than ordinary ability, and at one time held the championship of Illinois for the largest yield of corn per acre.
     He was married in 1877 to Miss Laura Young and to this union four children were born. Mrs. Edward Young of Kirkwood, Mo., Mrs. Harry (Helen Mabel) Andereck of Maplewood, Mo. and Mrs. E. L. (Earle Leroy) (Pauline Evelyn) Hodgen of Petersburg, survive. One son, Harry, preceded his father in death. Mrs. Sowers died on Aug. 6, 1888 and in 1894 he was married to Miss Mary Arkabour, who preceded him in death as did their only daughter Mildred, who died in Apr., 1924.
     Early in his life Mr. Sowers became a member of the Baptist Church, but later became a member of the Tallula Presbyterian church and was a member of the choir for many years. For the past three years he had lived here with his daughter.
 Surviving are the children named above, one sister, a number of grandchildren and numerous other relatives and a great number of friends.
 Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, short services being conducted at the home here at 2 o'clock by Rev. L.R. Cronkhite, followed by services at 3 o'clock at the Presbyterian church in Tallula with Rev. H.P. Mars assisting Rev. Cronkhite. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery, west of Tallula.

MRS. YOUNG DIED IN ST. JOHNS - Mrs. Nana Young of 209 E. Sheridan (the High Rise), wife of Edward Young, died at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 3 at St. John's Hospital following a long illness. Mrs. Young was born in Floyd County, Va., on Nov. 1, 1879, daughter of James M. & Laura Young Sowers. The family came to Illinois and lived at Tallula, and she was married on May 30, 1904 in Springfield, to Edward Young. They lived in Springfield, then for many years, in St. Louis, where they operated a bakery and restaurant. After retiring, they moved to Springfield, and upon completion of the High Rise building, came to Petersburg where she spent the remainder of her life. She is survived by her husband, Edward; one sister, Mrs. Pauline Hodgen of Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Hurley Funeral Home at 2 o'clock Wed. afternoon, Feb. 5, Rev. Frank L. Shaffer officiating. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield.

MRS. NORA SOWERS - Mrs. Nora Sowers died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. B. Kline, of East Orange, N.J., Monday of heart trouble. She was the youngest daughter of the late John Young and was the sister to Mrs. W.T. Williams, of town, and was about 54 years of age. She was married to J. Sim. Sowers of this county in the early eighties, and soon after their marriage they went to Illinois to reside where her husband was killed in a railroad accident a few years later or about 32 years ago.
She made her home with her two children: Ward Sowers of Roodhouse, Ill., and Mrs. T.B. Kline of New Jersey. She was taken to Tallula, Ill and buried Saturday by the side of her husband.  Two brothers and four sisters survive her. She had been blind for several years.
(NOTE: Nora is the sister of Laura Greene (Young) Sowers. Nora married J. "Simeon" Sowers, the brother of James Marion Sowers, and James married Laura Greene Young, sister of Nora.)
