He is survived by three sons, Letcher Vest, Samuel Vest and Albert Washington Vest; six daughters, Jane Conner, Marcella Conner, Jinner Carr, May Lawrence, Ada Sexton, and Linda Compton, 34 great-grandchildren, 77 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred D. Sweeney; four sisters; and five brothers. Allene was the daughter of John Henry and Pallie Vest, of Check, VA. Fred and Allene were instrumental in founding the Floyd Church of the Nazarene where Allene served as missionary President for many years and enjoyed working in the nursery. The family moved to the Roanoke Valley in 1956 where they supported growth in the Garden City Church of the Nazarene and later the Hollins Church of the Nazarene where she received special recognition for 20 plus years of service in the Nursery Department. Surviving are her children, Freddie Dalton (Bill), Susie Poff, and Audrey Poff (Wilson), all residing in the Roanoke area, Betty Rodabaugh (Larry), of Milwaukee, WI, Doris Moses (Joe), of Nashville, TN, Lynwood Sweeney (Skip), of Helen, GA, and Wayne Sweeney (Janette), of Salem. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren; 32 greatgrandchildren; 15 great-greatgrandchildren; brother, Horace Vest; and sister, Allie Vest, of Check, VA. The family would like to express a special thanks to the Rev. Lynn Riddle of Hollins Church of the Nazarene and Drs. Hooper and Somorin, and the caring nursing staff on the 3rd Floor at Lewis Gale Hospital. Mrs. Adkins was born October 28, 1912 to the late Robert (Bob Lee) and Lucy B. Vest. She was a member of Waverly Place Baptist Church and Local I.L.G.W.U. 400 Union. She was a retired employee of Kenrose Manufacturing Company. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Sherman Byer Vest, Ollie L. Vest, Elliot Vest, Otis Vest and Allen D. Vest, two sisters, Bertie V. Poff and Annie Rene Lovern. Surviving are two sisters and a brother-in-law, Bessie Craighead McDonald, Copper Hill, Elizabeth Virginia and Lewis W. Crouch, Roanoke; two sisters-in-law, Christine Vest, Check, Eloise Vest, Copper Hill; a brother-in-law, Lewis P. Lovern; also surviving are a dear friend, Florence Thompson; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 1997 at Lotz Roanoke Chapel. The Rev. Charles Hoffler will officiate. Interment will follow in Wilson Cemetery, Floyd County. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. She was the daughter of Samuel and Sallie Vest. She was about 70 years old and leaves her husband and three sons, namely, Will, Lee and Robert, her daughter, Mrs. Roy Stuart preceded her several years ago. Two sisters Mrs. Abbie Furrow and Mrs. Ann Conner both of Copper Hill survive. The remains were brought to Salem Church Monday. The funeral was preached by Elder H. V. Cole, of the Primitive Baptist church. The following hymns were sung "The day is Past and Gone" and "Rock of Ages". Quiet a large croud attended the funeral and burial.
