John Kellogg Akers

1924 - 2021

John Kellogg Akers, 96, a World War 11 veteran, died August 30, 2021 at his home in Williamstown, MA, with family by his side. He was born in Birmingham, AL, to Arthur and Nancy Akers, and moved with his family to Forest Hills, Queens, NY, during the Depression. After high school, he enlisted and served with the US Army Transportation Corp, Harbor Craft Detachment, in the Alaska-Aleutian Theatre. Upon discharge, he went on to complete a degree in textile engineering at the Philadelphia Textile Institute of the Philadelphia Museum of Art under the GI bill. In 1950, he married Katherine (Kay) Warner of Titusville, PA, and they began their married life and respective careers in Greenwich Village, New York City.
For 35 years, John worked as a product developer and researcher in the textile industry as he and Kay raised a family in Madison, NJ.
In 1987, after retirement, they moved to Chautauqua, NY, where John pursued his interests in music, art, woodworking, sailing and real estate development. In 2009, John and Kay retired for a second time to Williamstown, MA, close to family and the cultural life of the Berkshires. In addition to his volunteer pursuits in the church and community, his family and friends will remember John as an unrepentant story and joke teller, delivering an occasional ribald punchline or two.
Surviving John are his daughter, Susan, Denville, NJ, and his sons, John Jr. (Fran) of Centennial, CO, James of New York City, and Richard (Stephanie) of Florham Park, NJ. He leaves behind six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by Mary Pat Akers, Great Barrington, MA, as well as several nieces and nephews.
John was predeceased by his wife, Kay, of 64 years, his grandson, Spencer Akers, and his son in law, Richard Dowling.
A private service will be held in Virginia. In lieu of flowers, consider donating in John's memory to the Berkshire Food Project at www.berkshirefoodproject.org or the Chautauqua Fund at www.chq.org. To add to the Book of Memories, please visit www.flynndagnolifuneralhomes.com.
