Mrs. Mary Frances Joyce Bower, age 89 of Bassett, VA., passed away on February 5, 2019.

She was born on May 29, 1929 in Henry County, a daughter of Peter E. Joyce and Minnie Ida Wright Joyce. She was a 1946 graduate of Bassett High School. She worked as a Cafeteria Manager at Sanville Elementary School for 31 years. She started attending Blackberry Baptist Church at the age of 5 and became an active member for 84 years and taught Sunday School there for over 60 years.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Herman Richard Bower, one son, Mark Dean Bower, one sister, Lucille Joyce Koger, three brothers, Bernard E. Joyce, Carl L. Joyce and James “Troy” Joyce.

Mrs. Bower is survived by two sons, H. Richard Bower, Jr and wife, Donna, Dwight L. Bower and wife, Rhonda, one daughter F. Elaine Bower Flauaus and husband, Jim, 10 Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 9, 2019 at Blackberry Baptist Church, Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 8, 2019 at the church from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Herman Richard Bower Sr., 77, of 4533 Stones Dairy Road, Bassett, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

He was born in Draper, NC, on Jan. 21, 1922, a son of the late Jesse R. Bower and the late Lula Sigmon Bower. He retired from the lumber business after 37 years and continued to work as a cattle farmer. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Bower was a member of Blackberry Baptist Church for more than 60 years and served as a deacon, taught the Fred Belton Adult Men's Sunday School Class and was chairman of the Outreach Committee. He also was a member of the Henry County East Gideon Camp and was involved in the Gideon Prison Ministry.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Mary Frances Joyce Bower of the home; three sons, Richard Bower of Richmond and Dwight Bower and Mark Bower, both of Bassett; one daughter, Elaine Flauaus of Chesapeake; a sister, Mary Alcorn of Martinsville; three brothers, Norman Bower of Fieldale and Irvin Bower and Charles Bower, both of Bassett; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Blackberry Baptist Church with the Revs. John Wood, Daryl Joyce, Freddie Marshall and Scotter Simmons officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at the church. Memorial donations may be made to the Memorial Bible Plan of the Gideon International.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norman M. Bower; a grandchild, Tracy Brooke Helms; three brothers, Sam Via, James Via and Roy Thomas Via.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Floyd Anderson, of Rocky Mount; her son and daughter-in-law, Robert C. and Sherry Bower, of Monroe, N.C.; one sister and brother-in-law, Corinne (Connie) and Thomas M. Crowder, of Fieldale; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles William and Norma Via, of Bassett; four grandchildren, Nicole Davis, Marion Haynes, Melita Puccio Darryl Anderson and wife, Jane; and twelve great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, December 29, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Fieldale Baptist Church with Pastor Frank S. Gribble III, the Rev. Richard Harrison, Dr. Joe Bryant and the Rev. Robert C. Bower officiating. Interment will follow in Henry Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday December 28, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home in Bassett and other times at the home of Sandra and Floyd Anderson, 1260 Strawfield Circle in Rocky Mount. Mr. Norman M. (Tom) Bower, 86, of Fieldale, Va., died on Sunday, September 13, 2009, at Trinity Mission of Rocky Mount.

He was born on February 10, 1923, in Draper, N.C., to Jesse Richard Bower and Lula M. Sigmon Bower, both deceased.

Mr. Bower was a member of Fieldale Baptist Church and retired from the United States Army with 22 years of service.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ernest Bower and Herman Bower; and his granddaughter, Tracey Helms.

He is survived by his wife, Madge Irene Bower, of the home; daughter, Sandra C. Anderson, of Rocky Mount; son, Robert C. Bower, of Monroe, N.C.; sister, Mary Alcorn, of Ridgeway; brothers, Irvin Bower and Charles Bower, of Bassett; grandchildren, Nicole Davis and Marian Haynes; step grandchildren, Melita Puccio and Darryl Anderson; six great grandchildren; and six step grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, at Collins McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Bassett. The Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at Fieldale Baptist Church with Pastor Frank Gribble, Dr. Joe Bryant and Pastor Robert C. Bower officiating. Robert Lee "Pete" Alcorn Jr., 85, of 83 Wilson Ave., Martinsville, died Monday, May 8, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.

He was born in Martinsville on Jan. 27, 1921, to Robert L. Alcorn Sr. and Vesta Hurd Alcorn.

He served in the Navy during World War II and had played professional baseball in the minor leagues. He retired from DuPont with 37 years of service and he was a member of Kearfott Memorial Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mary B. Alcorn of the home; a son, Stephen Lee Alcorn of Martinsville; and one grandson.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Roselawn Burial Park with the Rev. J.D. Harmon officiating.

Mary Bower Alcorn, 88, of Martinsville, died Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. She was born in Franklin County on March 5, 1924 to Jesse Richard Bower and Lula Sigmon Bower. She was employed by DuPont for several years and was also in retail sales. She was a member of Kearfott Memorial Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. "Pete" Alcorn; three brothers, Herman Bower, Robert "Ernie" Bower and Norman "Tom" Bower.

She is survived by a son, Stephen L. Alcorn of Martinsville; two brothers, Irvin and Charles Bower of Bassett; one grandson and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Roselawn Burial Park in the Sanctuary of Hope with Pastor Bob Thurman officiating.

Irvin F. “Sleepy” Bower 89, of Bassett died Tuesday September 16, 2014 at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

Irvin was born in Ferrum on April 12, 1925 the son the late Jessie Bower and the late Lula Sigmon Bower.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Herman, Tom and Ernest Bower and sister Mary Alcorn.

Irvin was in the Navy during World War II and served on the battleship Iowa for 2 years and was in the states for 1 year. He also worked construction for 40 years and a saw miller for 5 years and worked at the Bassett train depot for 1 year. Irvin was a member of Blackberry Baptist Church.

Surviving his loving wife of 44 years Betty Lou Via Bower, one brother and 2 sisters in – law Charles and Virginia Bower and Mary Frances Bower.

Visitation will be Friday September 19 from 11:00 - 12 noon with funeral services to follow at 12 with Pastor Eric Kieselbach officiating with burial to follow in Blackberry Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Martinsville and Henry Co. Peter Morris Bower, 86, of Floyd, died Monday in a Radford Hospital.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs Moyer Agee, Floyd; Mrs Leroy Akers, Christiansburg; 11 grandchildren; five great grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held today at 2 p.m. in the New Haven Baptist Church. Burial was in the Jacksonville Cemetery.
