She is survived by her three children, David Smith, of Virginia Beach, Va., Brian Smith, of Warrington, Pa., and Carolyn Nolan, of Ridgefield, Conn.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude for the care and compassion Connie received from the staff of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, both in the Intensive Care Pulmonary Unit and the Palliative Care Unit. Thus, in lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Program, c/o Carilion Clinic Foundation, P.O. Box 12946, Roanoke, Va. 24029 in the name of Carolyn B. Bagbey.

Connie was born in Kansas City, Mo., on August 23, 1928, to parents, Alverna (Nan) Jacobson Bray and Ralph Vernon Bray Jr. She grew up in Dallas, Texas, with brother, Ralph (Bud) Vernon Bray Jr. (now deceased June 1996). She spent the war years in Silver Spring, Md., graduating from Calvin Coolidge High School, and shortly thereafter, moved to Lexington, Va. (age 18). After attending Southern Seminary, in Buena Vista, Va., and Richmond Professional University, now known as VCU in Richmond, Va., where she obtained an Art Degree, Connie married Edward Polk Tatum (Tate) Smith Jr., a Washington and Lee graduate, in Lexington, Va., on September 10, 1949.

The two briefly lived in Washington, D.C., where Connie was employed by the C.I.A. After moving to the Philadelphia area (Paoli, Pa.), the two had their two sons in the Bryn Mawr Hospital (David on July 2, 1953, and Brian on April 28, 1955). While in Paoli, Connie volunteered at Will's Eye Hospital and Bryn Mawr Hospital. The two boys grew up in Roanoke, Va., where Connie and Tate lived until 1969. In 1969 they returned to Paoli, Pa., and had their third child, Carolyn on October 15, 1969. The Smith family returned to Roanoke in 1974, where Tate died in 1984.

On July 18, 1996, Connie married William (Bill) Boyle Bagbey, and the two lived on Cardinal Road until Bill died in 2007, when Connie moved to Broadway Ave. While living in Roanoke, Connie enjoyed all of her many friends and activities including, among many others, volunteering at the Cherry Hill Art Museum, participating in the English Speaking Union, Nancy Christian Flemming Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Garden Club, and the Roanoke Symphony Auxiliary. She enjoyed her Monday evenings with a special group fondly known as "the Montano's Group." Connie was loved by so many and will be missed by all.

A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 28, 2010, at Second Presbyterian Church, Roanoke, Va.

2013 Death: 11-14-2013 Richfield and Good Samaritan Hospice Salem City, VA but of Christiansburg City, VA.

2013 Obit: Published in Roanoke Times from Nov. 16 to Nov. 17, 2013 (src: Find A Grave)

Rahma Smith Kirkwood, of Christiansburg, formerly of Salem, born June 21, 1924, expired peacefully in the kind services of Richfield and Good Samaritan Hospice in Salem on Thursday, November 14, 2013, with her sister and dearest companion, Lydia Reece, by her side. By our loving and humble accounts, she lived a charmed life, had a gentle spirit and was the beloved wife to her soul mate, William "Bill" Kirkwood.

Her family cherished her. Sisters and brothers were naturally drawn to her kindness, fairness, friendship, and smile. Nieces and nephews could count on her for additional motherly advice, unconditional acceptance, and boundless love. Close friendships and ties even brought her honorary titles of "Grandmother" as she poured all her maternal love onto the innocent faces of many honorary grandchildren. Never a more generous, more loving or more elegant individual known simply to us all as, "Rahma". For those of us who had the privilege of knowing this lovely lady and to appreciate her fun and adventurous nature as well as her famously dry sense of humor, we will dearly miss our loved one, our courageous companion and friend. A life well lived, and an exceptional role model for us to emulate. Now and forevermore our everlasting Guardian Angel. God Speed Dearest Rahma Lee.

Rahma had been a resident of The Oaks Richfield Retirement Community in Salem. She lived most of her adult life in Roanoke. She was born third in a family of ten siblings in Floyd County on June 21, 1924, to the late Grover Smith and Gladys Aldridge Smith and was raised in Blacksburg on their picturesque family farm off of Yellow Sulphur Road. Rahma graduated from Blacksburg High School, worked and retired from the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company.
Rahma married William R. Kirkwood, of Thaxton in 1949. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Roanoke. They were blessed with a "Match-Made-in-Heaven" union that lasted for 48 blissful years until Bill's untimely passing in 1997.

Rahma was a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church in Roanoke and enjoyed her weekly ladies’ luncheon with fellow members. She loved to garden, cook, read and cheer for her favorite sports teams, the Washington Redskins, the Atlanta Braves and Virginia Tech Hokies. She enjoyed traveling of any kind, but especially loved visiting her family members all across the United States.

Rahma was preceded in death by her parents, Grover and Gladys Aldridge Smith; her husband, William R. Kirkwood; her sisters, Virginia Aileen Absher, Talmia "Ted" Smith, Irene S. Hagan Lois Jewel Elliott and Mary Katherine Liano; her brothers, John Helms Smith, Grover Curtis Smith and William Lloyd "Bill" Smith.
The family would like to express their thanks to Dr. Haider and Ruth Ann for their care and kindness.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 18, 2013, in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roy Miller of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg.

101-year-old countian dies Funeral services were scheduled Wednesday for Gypsie Agee Smith Boothe, who passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 1990 at the age of 101 years old.

The Floyd County native was born Dec. 16, 1888 to Everett Agee and Minerva Sweeney.  When she was only three years old, both of her parents died. She was then raised by her grandparents, the Agees.  Her sister, Ella, now deceased, was raised by another family about six miles away. According to information Boothe had told her granddaughter and a friend at the Skyline Manor Nursing Home, Boothe picked chestnuts, dried apples, and peaches to use for income for the family during her childhood days.  After her grandparents died, she went to live with her cousin and his wife.

Boothe attended the County Line School until she was about 14 years old.

She and her first husband Elmer Smith lived in Illinois, Ohio and West Virginia during their marriage.  Although a homemaker most of her life, she worked shucking corn and in canning factories during her stay in Illinois.  Her husband Elmer was killed in a West Virginia coal mining accident.

Boothe's second marriage was to Flenore Strickler.

Her last husband, L. A. Boothe, died in 1976.

A friend at the nursing home said Boothe loved to read, and during Boothe's first marriage, she told the friend, she and her husband passed the time at night by reading to each other. Boothe also enjoyed sewing and quilting.  She was a member of the Methodist church.

Boothe is survived by: two sons, R. V.
