Farmer Near Belspring Found Dead Of Wound
Artemus Dudley Akers, 75, a farmer near Belspring since 1918, was found dead by members of his family this morning in the barnyard of his home with a small caliber bullet wound in his head and a rifle nearby. A native of Floyd county, he was reported by his household to have been despondent for the past several weeks and was seen picking up the rifle in the kitchen of the house a few minutes before his body was found. Sheriff Roy Summers and deputies investigated, but no official verdict on the nature of his death was available immediately. Akers is survived by his wife and nine children.

Funeral services for A. Dudley Akers were held Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock from his home near Belspring. The Rev. G.P. Harris conducted the service. Burial was in the Hickman cemetery. Mr. Akers was born March 20, 1872, in Floyd county, a son of Jonathan and Harriet Lester Akers. He is survived by his widow, Elma Simpkins Akers, two daughters and six sons by a previous marriage, also three sisters and; two brothers. He had made his home in the Belspring community since 1918.

Funeral services for Waddy Marshall Akers, 81, of Narrows, Va., will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at the Pentecostal Holiness Church, Rev. Paul Hambrick will officiate and bury will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Akers, a native of Floyd County, Va., was a son of the late John and Harriet Akers. He was a retired farmer and carpenter.

He died Saturday, in a Pearisburg hospital following a short illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Minnie Akers, last Friday.

Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Fred Robertson of Narrows; one sister: Mrs. Mitchell Wilkinson of Narrows; one brother: Conley Akers of Salem, Va.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at Riffe's Funeral Home of Narrows after noon on Sunday. Graveside rites will be conducted by the Odd Fellows Lodge 149.

Maggie Akers-Robertson, 55, of Narrows, died Friday at her home following a brief illness.

A lifelong resident of Giles County, she was born August 26, 1921 and was the daughter of the late Waddie & Minnie Conley Akers.

She is survived by her husband Fred E. Robertson, one son Waddie Robertson; 3 daughters Rita R. Gautier; Ruby R. Evans; and Rhetta R. Neal; 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services were Monday at Riffes with Rev. C.L. Atkinson officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.

DICKERSON, Ora Akers, 97, of Radford, died Saturday, October 14, 2000 at her home surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Dickerson was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, Clayton Dickerson.

Surviving to cherish her memory are a son, Haydon Dickerson; a daughter and son-in-law, Glada and Russell Dulaney; a daughter, Goldie Dickerson, all of Radford; two sisters, Opa Cox or Riner and Ersie Phillips of Floyd; and a special niece, Treva Loving of New River.

Special thanks to her caregivers, Betty DeHart RN, Linda Robingson and Frances (Polly) Harris.

Byron Lee Akers, 75, of Shawsville, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem. He was born on December 16, 1935 in Floyd County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Talford and Ruby Akers. 
Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 27 years, Cledith "Flo" Kincer Akers; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Norman Fitzwater, of Blacksburg; brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Verna Mae Akers, of Willis; two granddaughters, Nicole Fitzwater, of Charlottesville, and Sarah and Ben Price, of Roanoke; aunts, Vada Reed, of Riner, Patty Akers, of Newport News, and Velta Maxey, of Roanoke; sisters-in-law, Nancy and Pat King, of Wytheville, Eunice Blankenship, of Rural Retreat, and Doris Wall, of Wytheville; 15 nephews; and four nieces, which he loved; special companions, Buddie, Katie, Little Bit and Peanut; and special friends, Cindy Hale, Sandra Conner and the Wilson family. 
Byron was a member of the Harbor of Hope Pentecostal Holiness Church in Christiansburg, Va. He loved his extraordinary church family. Byron was an avid Nascar fan, raced for many years himself here locally and was a crew member of Wilson "08" racing. He was also a member of the Masonic Craighill Lodge #160 as well as the Kazim Shriners of Roanoke, Va. 
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 6, 2011, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Harbor of Hope Pentecostal Holiness Church, Christiansburg. The Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at the Harbor of Hope Pentecostal Holiness Church, Christiansburg with the Reverend Richard Kingrea and the Reverend Leon Alley officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg, with Masonic Graveside Rights. Contributions to the wife would be appreciated. Horne Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.

Lovelynne (Lovell) Duncan Akers, of Floyd, passed away Sunday, Aug 5, 2012 is spending her 98th birthday in heaven. She was born August 7, 1914 to the late William Austin and Sabra Wade Duncan.

She is preceded in death by her husband; Harless J. Akers, daughter & son-in-law; Loretta & Willie Altizer.

Lovell is survived by her son & daughter-in-law James & Ruth D. MONMOUTH - Florence Marie Shuler, 99, Monmouth, died at 5:55 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at Monmouth Nursing Home.

She was born July 9, 1912, in Kirkwood, the daughter of Newt Fuller and Sarah Margaret (Dulaney) Akers. She was reared and educated there, and she graduated from Kirkwood High School in 1931 and Brown's Business College in Rock Island.

Florence married Vern Shuler in Davenport, Iowa, on May 4, 1939, and he died June 11, 1975.

She had worked as a secretary for a number of years. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and volunteering at Strom Center.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Monmouth and the Friendship Rebekah Lodge 22 in Monmouth, which she joined in 1939.

Surviving are her son, Arnold Ray (Debbie) Shuler of Monmouth; stepdaughter, Marjorie Thornton of Monmouth; grandson, Christopher Glenn Shuler of Monmouth; granddaughter, Miranda Marie (Chris Carson) Shuler of Monmouth; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; brother, Lonnie (Freeda) Akers of Brookville, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Helen Christensen, and three brothers, two of whom died in infancy.

Friends may call on Friday (March 2, 2012) at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, where her family will receive friends from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. A Rebekah service will be held at 1:30 p.m., followed by graveside services in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery. Vernie Akers Phillips, of Willis, Va., passed away Saturday, November 13, 2010. She was born September 2, 1919, to the late Perry and Ollie Akers. Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Martin Phillips; son, Glen B. Phillips; brother, Verlie Akers; sister, Verstle Hinkley; infant brother, Vernard; great-great-granddaughter, Ava Noel Conner; also, her two sons-in-law, Walter Reed and Robert Lee. 
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Erma J. and Jim Flint, of Riner, Ollie May Lee and fiancé, Johnny Sheppard, of Mechanicsville; grandchildren, Phillip and Susan Reed, of Catawba, Sharon and Donnie Cox, of Willis, Donna and John Wikstrom, of Christiansburg, Deborah Minahan, of Fort Worth, Texas, Robert Lee, of Mechanicsville, Paul and Susan Phillips, of Bedford, Wesley and Stephanie Phillips, of McLean; greatgrandchildren, Amanda and Greg Conner, of Willis, Alicia and Jason Slaughter, of Radford, Patrick Minahan, of Texas, Chris and Amanda Wikstrom, of Stuart, Jacob and Andrew Phillips, of Bedford, Lauren and Rachael Phillips, of McLean; great great-grandchildren, Luke and Joshua Conner, of Willis, Alison and Marlee Slaughter, of Radford; brother, Vernon Akers, of Hiwassee; also her special friends who have helped her so much, Phillip and Betty Weddle. Vernie was a good loving mother, grandmother, wife and friend to many. Our home life was one where we were taught to be honest in all things and to be kind and to always do right. She made sure we learned to take care of our responsibilities and to work hard to be as good as she expected us to be. She made sure everything was as it should be, to the best of her ability. She was a care-giver to many people in her life and never complained about it. She was a friendly, warm and caring neighbor, even though she had to face many trials that were so hard. We look at her life as an example for us to try to follow. 
She will be so very missed by all of her family, it is difficult to imagine her not being here with us, to call and talk to anytime we wish. Our memories will comfort us, and the knowledge that she is with God and her loved ones already gone on before. We will look forward also to being with them again when God calls us. We will strive to be worthy, also. 
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, November 15, 2010, at Maberry Funeral Home, officiated by Pastor Roy Turpin and the Rev. Vinton Quesenberry. Interment will follow at Big Sand Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, November 14, 2010, at the funeral home.

Source: "Churchmans of Kentucky" Charles R Churchman 1988 Chapter 8 Pg 41  Evelyn Lillian Wemes, daughter of Isaac, was born in Jefferson County, KY? 3-19-1912.  She was married in Jefferson Co. 3-19-1946 to Lacy Freeman Akers who was born in Carthage, Floyd County, VA 10-5-1907.  Lacy's parents were William C. Akers and Mary Jane Alley?.  No issue.
Evelyn was a saleslady at Selman's, an exclusive ladies-apparel store downtown, and also was a saleslady in Virginia.  When they married, Lacy was in the service and she lived in Japan three years, starting in 1950.  When Lacy retired from the Army, they went to live in Virginia, Lacy's home area, and Lacy worked for the post office.  Since his retirement from there, he works part-time for the post office credit union.  They moved to Richmond, VA in 1953.

Jordan's relationship to John is not known at this time. Jordan is believed to be the son of Simon & Agatha (Curnutt) Chaffin. Agatha Curnutt was the daughter of James Curnutt. Velta was an Akers and James was her great grandfather. He supposedly froze to death while going fron one son's house to another. Another story is that he was coming from church and was found in a kneeling position with his bible in his hand, either could be true due to the date of his death. 
We have a considerable amount of data on Brooks, Velta's grandfather but not a lot before that. Earl Aker's site is probably the best online site.
It seems that William Akers lived in England and that is where the line you are on comes from down through Wm 2nd and Wm 3rd and then to Blackburn etc. I have some books compiled by various people about the Akers families and there so many mistakes in them that I am afraid to quote any of them. I suspect you are looking at Nancy's family because she married Lloyd Thompson.
Velta's mother and father were cousins but I have forgotten exactly how. Now I remember they both descended through Adam Akers. I will have to dig out my book to find out the exact line. Someday I am going to put all of this data on the computer if someday ever gets here.

Subj: [VAFLOYD] Little Jim Akers 
I thought I would muddy the waters a little as far as James "little jim" Akers is concerned. 
The following is from a paper by Lucy Hudson Akers, a daughter-in-law of Brooks. She says that Brooks told her this as he would sit in his chair and she would be cleaning up the house. She says that Jonathan was married to Rebecca Kunode who was raised in England. They were the parents of James who was one of their six children. James married Sarah Reed in 1840. They had eight children, six boys and two girls. George, Jonathan, Ed, Brooks, Psaulters and William. The girls were Elizabeth and Nancy.
George and Jonathan fought in the civil war. George was killed at the battle of Bull Run. Jonathan was wounded, being shot through the mouth and about the face. (note: family lore has it that Jonathan had deserted and knew that the soldiers were seeking him, so he dressed in his mother's clothes and was sitting at the spinning wheel when they came. Apparently they didn't check very close)
Brooks' grandfather died during the first year of the war Becky died at the age of 95 during the second year from nose bleed.
James was the first school teacher in these parts and built the first school house in the neighborhood. It was built from logs and was just one room. He taught for fifty cents per month for each child often taking his pay in foodstuff. He also did public writing, such as deeds and such documents. 
In 1868 he helped build the log cabin for his son Jonathan which later became the home of his son Brooks. It was in this house that Sarah/Sally died in early Eighty’s. James lived alone for a while, later marrying Nancy Leffew who was the spinster aunt of Brooks' wife Louise. James had been used to being a free spirit and couldn't adapt himself to the peculiar ways of the spinster woman. They only lived together for a short time and then he lived among his children. He was found dead one wintery day near his son Ed's house. (Note: some say he froze to death) He was on his knees as if he were praying.
The letter stops here with the word "continued" but no one has seen any more writing. I don't know if she stopped there or if she wrote more and it was lost. I wish I could have received this letter before she passed away.
