SUMPTER, Curtis A., 92, of Floyd, passed away Sunday, April 9, 2000 in Raleigh Court Health Center after a long battle with Alzheimers. Curtis was a member of Floyd Baptist Church. He was a former Commonwealth Attorney for Floyd County and a former President of the Bank of Floyd. He was a graduate of Roanoke College and University of Virginia Law School. He also served as a Captain in the Army A Force in WWII. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hardee and Addie Sumpter; one sister, Vera Dehart; and three brothers, James H. Sumpter, Jr., Melvin H. Sumpter, and William R. Sumpter. He is survived by two brothers, Joseph A. Sumpter of Duluth, Ga., Robert M. Sumpter of Durham, N.C.; four sisters, Alice Sumpter of Bluefield, W.Va., Katherine Elder of Buena Vista, Marjorie Drumheller of Lynchburg, Virginia Hawes of Roanoke.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2000 at Floyd Baptist Church with Dr. Alton Griffin officiating. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery. Family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home.

SUMPTER, Lelia Alice, 86, of 1015 College Ave., Bluefield, W.Va., passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center. Born on March 22, 1915 in Floyd, Va., she was a daughter of the late James Hardee and Addie Harman Sumpter. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bluefield and was a former member of the Board of Trustees for Bluefield College for 16 years. She was retired from the Bluefield Telephone Company after many years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers. She is survived by three sisters, Virginia Hawes of Roanoke, Va., Margie Drumheller and her husband, John of Lynchburg, Va., and Katherine Elder and her husband, George of Buena Vista, Va. and Robert Sumpter and his wife, Freda of Durham, N.C. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, March 7, 2002 at 11 a.m. from the First Baptist Church in Bluefield. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. from the Jacksonville Cemetery in Floyd, Va. Family members will serve as pallbearers. Almena Katherine "Kitty" Sumpter Elder, 90, of Buena Vista died Monday, August 27, 2007 at the Golden Living Health Care Center. She was the wife of the late George Garland Elder, Jr.

Born in Floyd County, May 26, 1917, she was a daughter of the late James Hardy and Addie Harmon Sumpter. She graduated from the Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Richmond and retired after many years in the nursing profession. She was a member of Buena Vista Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Jane Elder Dove; two sisters, Alice Sumpter and Verna DeHart and five brothers, Curtis Sumpter, James Sumpter, Jr., Melvin Sumpter, William Sumpter and Joseph Sumpter.

Survivors include, Gehrig Lee Dove and his wife Ronda of Buchanan; three grandchildren: Lori Almena Dove Chovanec and her husband Chris, PFC Ryan Gehrig Dove, stationed in Iraq and Chelsea Lee Dove of Buchanan; two sisters: Marjorie Grace Drumheller of Lynchburg and Virginia Sumpter Hawes of Roanoke; one brother, Robert S. Sumpter of Durham, NC; and several loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roy Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Sarah Virginia Sumpter Hawes, of Roanoke, passed over to her heavenly home Friday, September 16, 2011 after a lengthy illness. She was born May 29, 1925 in Floyd, the tenth of eleven siblings to her late parents James H. Sumpter Sr. and Addie Harmon.

Sumpter, always staying connected with her beloved family. She was a proud graduate of Floyd County High School class of 1942, and member of the championship girls basketball team. After serving in clerical work in Washington D.C. during World War II she attended Virginia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing, graduating and licensed as a Registered Nurse in 1948. While nursing at Bluefield Hospital she met the love of her life, her late husband Ben M. Hawes as members of First Baptist Church of Bluefield and were married in 1956, moving to Roanoke shortly after. She served as an RN at the old Lewis Gale, Jefferson, and Community hospitals, finally retiring in 1989 as a charge nurse at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Her mission in life was the care and healing of her patients, family and friends in the most selfless and giving way. 

She was a loyal and faithful member of Beacon Baptist Church in Salem VA.

Preceding her in death were infant daughter, Sarah Beth Hawes, sisters, Vera Dehart, Alice Sumpter, and Katherine Elder, brothers, Melvin Sumpter, Curtis A. Sumpter, James H. Sumpter Jr., Joe Sumpter, and Bill Sumpter.

Missing her deeply til we meet again in heaven are sister, Marjorie Drumheller; brother, Robert Sumpter and wife, Frieda as well as cousin/sister, Carol Harrell; children, R. Brent Hawes and wife, Iris, Thomas B. Hawes, both of Roanoke, Ben D. Hawes and wife, Faith of Bluefield W.Va.; loving grandchildren, Danielle, Jonathon, Jocelyn, and Alexander; as well as a great many precious nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff and nurses of Avante at Roanoke for their compassionate care for mom and our family. 

Funeral services will be held at noon, Monday September 19, 2011 at Oakey's South Chapel with graveside services following at Jacksonville Cemetery in Floyd. Eulogy and services will be conducted by the Reverend Don Woodard, and the Reverend Tom Bonn. Music by Faith and Danielle Hawes. The family will receive visitors Sunday, September 18, 2011, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the chapel.
