1979 Article: Page 1 & 12- THE NEWS JOURNAL, RADFORD, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18. 1979

A Blacksburg man was killed instantly when the truck he was driving crashed through the roof of the Norfolk and Western train station in Christiansburg.

According to Christiansburg Police Chief Alvin Hale, Novie Otis Cox, 68, was killed when the 1971 pickup he was driving left the road and crashed through the roof and door of the NW station.

Cox was traveling north on East Main St. in Christiansburg headed down a steep grade. Police said the vehicle, which was apparently traveling on the wrong side of the road, became "airborne" after crossing Depot St. and traveled approximately 50 yards in the air before striking the railroad station near the tracks. The vehicle crashed through an overhanging portion of the roof on the passenger station and traveled through the door to the building.

Bill Harmon, stationmaster at the Christiansburg depot, said he heard a noise but didn't know the building had been hit. "I was on the west end of the building and I heard a noise but I thought the wreck had been down in Cambria." Harmon said it wasn't until someone came running into the building looking for him that he knew of the accident. "It's a good thing nobody was waiting for the 1011 (Amtrak's Hill topper)" Harmon said. "He was coming down what they call 'Danger Hill' and went over the guard rail. He hit the eave of the building and it just cut the top off the pickup then he crashed through the double doors and landed in the baggage room."

The vehicle was demolished and damage to the train station was estimated at $2,000. The cause of the accident is still unknown and is being investigated by Christiansburg police.

2005 Death: 7-2-2005.

2005 Obit: The Floyd Press , Thursday, July 7, 2005

BLACKSBURG-Ethel M. Quesenberry Cox, 90, of Prices Fork, went to her heavenly home July 2, 2005. Mom was so happy to be in her home with her family by her side for her last days on earth.

She was an inspiration to her family. Her conversations were always positive and uplifting. Her vision of heaven was such a comfort to her family before she departed this life.

Her life was a testimony of the love she had for others, as she prayed with the "Ladies Tuesday Morning Prayer Group," and was a prayer warrior for the "Women's Ministry Prayer Chain."

She loved the "Women's Ministry Monday Night Quilting Group" as she was an accomplished quilter and seamstress. Mom faithfully supported and worked beside her late husband, Reverend Otis Cox, as he pastored many churches of the Appalachian conference of the I.P.H.C. She was a faithful member of the Merrimac Pentecostal Holiness Church for many years. She loved and supported her pastor Reverend Jerry Sloss and all her church family.

She was born in Floyd County to the late Jim and Amanda Quesenberry. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Josie Quesenberry, Maretha Marshall, Cardova Phillips, and Nonnie Cox, four brothers, Chris, Norman, Arthur, and Kermit Quesenberry, and also a loving grandson, Thom Proco.

She is survived by: three sons and daughters-in-law, Lowell and Alta Cox of Lexington, North Carolina, David and Betty Cox of Seymour, Tennessee, Carlos and Kathy Cox of Blacksburg; four daughters and sons-in-law, Rachel and John Myers of Prices Fork, Connie and Garland Proco of Suwanee, Georgia; grandchildren, Darrell, Karan, Martha, Rebecca, Melissa, Derrick, Emily, Dennis, Elaine, Carissa, Beth, David, Daniel, and Aaron; 14 great-grandchildren, Braxton, Mary, Cara, Thomas, Ian, Tarah, Tyler, Hunter, Chloe, Kevin, Daniel, Alex, Matthew, and Spencer; also extended family, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Mom's presence will be missed by all who loved her, but our hope and strength is in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Her memory was honored on Tuesday, July 5, at 11:00 a.m. at the Merrimac Pentecostal Holiness Churchildren with Reverend Jerry Sloss and Reverend Glenard Quesenberry officiating.
Interment followed in the Appalachian Conference Headquarters Cemetery in Dublin. McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg, handled arrangements. The family sincerely thanks Pastor Jerry Sloss and the church family, friends, and neighbors for all their kind deeds and prayers. Thank you Carilion Hospice for your loving care and compassion. Special thanks to our sister Rachel for being a loving, dedicated care-giver to our precious mother.
