HOLT, Daniel Stockton, 78, of Roanoke, peacefully passed away Wednesday, June 2, 1999. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with honor in the U.S. Army. He landed on Utah Beach, June 6, 1944, with the 262nd Infantry, 90th Division. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Combat Infantryman Badge, along with five Battle Stars. He was retired from the soft drink industry and was a 35-year member of the Cave Spring Lions Club, where he served as a past President. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty Altizer Holt; a daughter, Frances A. Holt; his brother, Fred C. Holt and his wife, Catherine; and a sister, Helen Pickett. Also surviving are a very special brother-in-law, Lacy L. Altizer and his wife, Jean, of Springfield, Mo.; two loving nieces and two loving nephews from their union; and a special devoted niece, Linda Holt. Graveside funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, June 4, 1999 in Sherwood Memorial Park with Dr. Harry Y. Gamble officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials be made to the Cave Spring Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 20181, Roanoke, Va. 24018. The family also wishes to express a special thanks to Dr. E. Blackford Noland, Dr. Bertram Spetzler, Dr. Nelson Greene, and the nurses and staff on 6 East of Lewis Gale Medical Center for their loving and supportive care of our loved one during this very difficult time. HOLT, Betty Frances Altizer, 79, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, May 12, 2003. She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel S. Holt and her parents, Lacy M. and Johnie A. Altizer. She was of the Christian faith. Betty was instrumental in starting the VARO Federal Credit Union where she was employed until her retirement in March of 1986. She is survived by her daughter, Frances Allen Holt of Roanoke; one brother, Lacy L. Altizer and his wife, Jean of Springfield, Mo.; one brother-in-law, Fred C. Holt and his wife, Catherine of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews. The family invites you to join with them in a celebration of her life from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Oakey's South Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sherwood Memorial Park with Dr. Harry Y. Gamble officiating. ALTIZER, Fred Currin Sr., 90, of Christiansburg, died Wednesday morning, April 3, 1996, at Radford Community Hospital. He was born June 5, 1905, on Little River in Montgomery County. Mr. Altizer was a member of the Christiansburg Church of Christ for over forty years and retired in 1971 from the Virginia Department of Highways after 41 years service. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, and is survived by his wife, Ruby Sutphin Altizer; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth A. and Mary Jane Altizer of Christiansburg, Fred Jr. and Sandra Altizer of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Keith, Jason and Jessica; and a brother, Lacy Altizer, Roanoke. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday from the Christiansburg Church of Christ, conducted by Mr. Tom Hodge, Mr. Larry Phillips and Mr. C. E. Mannon. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the American Heart Association, c/o Mrs. Betty Basham, Memorial Chairman, 200 Evans St., Christiansburg, Va. 24073. Duane Leslie "Skip" Altizer, 84, of Iowa Falls, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at the Hampton Health Care Center, Hampton. Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 31, at Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls. Memorials may be directed to the Greenbelt Humane Society, Alden. Burial was in the Berlin Cemetery, Jackson Township, Owasa. Military honors were conducted by the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post #188. 

Duane Altizer was born in Popejoy, on April 7, 1927 to Shirlie and Moore Altizer and grew up during the Great Depression of the 1930's with sister, Doris and brothers, Don and Daryl. Their home was the living quarters above the Rock Island Depot in Popejoy, where Moore was the depot agent. He graduated from the Oakland Township School in 1944. In 1945, Duane was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Forces where he served as a corporal assigned to the Headquarters Squadron, 92nd Air Service Group, Fort Read, Trinidad, B.W.I. On his return to Iowa, he attended Ellsworth College and received his associate degree. As a student and after, he worked as a billing clerk and did part-time farm work. From 1949-1950, he attended and graduated from the Midland Linotype School and worked at the Ackley World Journal until his reenlistment in the Air Force in 1951. In 1952, Duane was sent to the Weather School at Oklahoma A&M University in Stillwater to learn the skills of a weather analyst. For the duration of the Korean Conflict, he served as a weather analyst/meteorologist with Detachment 3 of the 31st Weather Squadron at Furstenfeldbruck AB in Germany with the rank and title of Alc Analyst. The April before his return to the states in May 1954, Skippy spent seven days leave in Paris and seven days in London, staying in the Picadilly Circus district. 

Upon retiring from service to his country, Skippy continued his career as a linotype operator and was a member of the Typographical Union, as well as the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post #188 in Iowa Falls. He worked for several of the major newspapers in Iowa, including the Des Moines Register. His last assignment was the Manson Journal Herald. After his father died in 1976, Skippy left his career to be by his mother's side, or as he would say, "to take care of each other," while tending to the flower gardens and lawn tare. On the death of his mother in 1993, Skippy joined niece, Jacque Lagerquist's household. It was there that he had the opportunity to share daily duties in raising a boy from infancy and became known to Colton as "Nanny," who was as dear to him as a son. He was also the beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews. His sense of humor was ever present, and he had some pretty good stories. He was a quiet man who seemed to keep to himself, but nonetheless had a barometer on what was happening around town! Returning to his hometown for Popejoy Days was a treat that he looked forward to. His kitty cat, Jade, was a cheerful companion. This past April 7, Uncle Skippy turned 84 years old. Family members joined him for a birthday party at the Hampton Health Care Center where he had moved earlier that week due to progressive dementia. 

Duane Altizer is survived by 11 nieces; three nephews; 23 great-nieces and nephews; 26 great-great-nieces and nephews; one great-great-great-nephew; and two first cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Moore and Shirlie Altizer; a sister, Doris Baker; two brothers, Donald Altizer and Daryl Altizer; two nephews, William Baker and infant/Donald Altizer; and a great-nephew, infant/Patrick Hoye. 

Duane Altizer is the great-grandson (six times removed) of Emera Altizer, a soldier in the American Revolutionary War from Riner, Virginia, the town where his own father had been born and raised.

James Wesley Altizer, 61, passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2011, at his home in Christiansburg, surrounded by his family.  He was a member of Christiansburg Church of the Brethren.  He was preceded in death by his father, Donald B. Altizer.  Survivors include his mother, Helen Naff Altizer; his wife of 38 years, Martha Sowers Altizer; son, Wesley Beldon Altizer; daughter, Amanda Desiree Altizer; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and John Richardson; and brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Deneise Altizer, all of Christiansburg; Chester and Claudine Sowers and family; and nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins and friends.  Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 14, 2011, at the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren with Pastor Donald Peters officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2011, at the church. ALTIZER, VIRGNIA ELIZABETH, 100,of Christiansburg, died at Radford Nursing Home on Saturday, April 6, 2002. The daughter of Belle Burnett and Grant Altizer, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Altizer, and a daughter, Ruth Altizer Dunn of Wilmington, N.C. A member of the Church of Christ, Franklin Street, Christiansburg, and a church member since 1920, Mrs. Altizer lived on Evans Street and cared for herself until two years ago when she moved to the Wheatland Home. She loved the staff and residents there and visits from dear friends, Faye and Lowell Altizer, Mitch Howlett, Geneva Duncan, and Virginia Justice, among others. Last September on her 100th birthday, a great number of friends joined her to celebrate the occasion. Her survivors are her son, Robert Kolmer Altizer and his wife Paula of Boca Raton, Florida; her son-in-law, Jimmy Dunn of Wilmington, NC; and four grandchildren: Lisa (Jeff) Weyers of Belmont, NC; Kathleen Altizer and Virginia Elizabeth (Jack) Fleming and one grandson, John D. Altizer of Boca Raton, FL; and two great granddaughters, Christina Weyers of Belmont, NC and Kathleen Fleming of Boca Raton, Fl. Visitation will be at Horne Funeral Home from 6 to 7:30 PM on Monday, April 8. A funeral service will be conducted the following day, Tuesday, April 9, at 2PM at the funeral home with A. Geraldine Elizabeth (Gerry) Altizer Price, 73, of Savannah, Georgia, wife of Ralph C. Price, Jr., passed away in Christ on Friday afternoon, December 8, 2006, under the loving care of Hospice Savannah. She was a loving, devoted, and steadfast woman who lived her life for others. Born in Roanoke, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Elgin Edmund Altizer and Gwendolyn Shelton Altizer. Mrs. Price was a member of Parkway Church of Christ and retired as an administrative assistant in the School of Arts and Sciences at Armstrong Atlantic State University.

Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Ralph C. Price, Jr. of Savannah, Georgia; one daughter, Penny Price-Matthews and her husband, John E., of Savannah, Georgia; two sons, Benjamin E. Price and his wife, Pamela, of Pooler, Georgia, and R. Clinton Price III and his wife, Dawn, of Savannah, Georgia; one brother, John Wesley Altizer of Olympia, Washington; thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday morning in Parkway Church of Christ. Interment will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lola Light Altizer and three brothers.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Reginald W. and Pat Altizer, Christiansburg; two daughters and a son-in-law, Regina A. and Howard G. Spradlin Jr., Greensboro, N.C., Barbara Jean Altizer, Blacksburg; grandchildren, Chris, Jason and Jeremy Spradlin, Greensboro, N.C., Suzanne Altizer, Colonial Heights, Todd and Kevin Altizer, of the home; two brothers, and a sister-in-law, A. ALTIZER, A. Lowell, 85, of Christiansburg, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, July 5, 2002.

Originally trained as an accountant at National Business College, he later decided to further his studies graduating from Freed Hardeman College, Henderson, Tennessee, to become a minister and evangelist of the Church of Christ. He was instrumental in helping to establish churches of Christ in Christiansburg, Radford, Blacksburg, Pearisburg, and Collinsville. During that time, he was involved in evangelistic missions preaching in eighteen states. He was also a frequent speaker at lectureships across the country including the Freed Hardeman lectureships, which he attended for fifty-two consecutive years. In recent years, he assisted in organizing the Virginia Lectureships working with churches of Christ throughout the State of Virginia.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John R. and Mellie S. Altizer; five brothers, Elgin, Roy, Kermit, Percy, and Vernal; one sister, Oprah Elkins; and grandson, Chad Johnson.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of sixty two years, Faye Mitchell Altizer; two daughters and spouses, Sandra and Dennis Johnson, Hendersonville, Tenn., and Suzi and David Rogers, Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren and spouses, Nicole and David Singleton, Hendersonville, Tenn., Amanda and Jay Griffin and Brooke and Valentin Kovalenko, all of Jacksonville, Fla; and great-grandchild, Alexis Lee Singleton; one brother-in-law, Ray Mitchell, of Floyd; and two sisters-in-law, Maynis Mitchell Howlett, of Christiansburg, Gloria Altizer, of Roanoke; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, July 8, in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel. A long time friend of over fifty years, Mr. Clayton Winters will conduct the service. Interment will be in the mausoleum at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 Sunday, July 7, and from 12 until 1 on Monday, July 8 followed by the service. Arthur Garfield Altizer, 50, a lifelong resident of Montgomery and Pulaski counties, died at his home on the Alumspring Road early yesterday of apoplexy.

Survivors are his mother, Mrs. V S Altizer, Newbern, his widow, Mollie Cox Altizer; two daughters, Mrs. Ione Grantham, of Lynchburg, and Mrs. Lincoln Baugh, and two sons, Arko and A. G. Altizer, Jr., and also five sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held in the Thornspring church tomorrow at 2 p. m, with the Rev. J. D. Mayberry, of Independence, in charge, assisted by the Rev. Elton V Jones.

She was the widow of Arthur C. Grantham and was also preceded in death by a brother, A.G. Altizer. 

Mrs. Grantham was retired from Miller & Rhoads and Sharmel Fashions. She was a member of Rosalind Mills Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Mrs. Mack (Barbara Quesenberry) Morris, of Pulaski; six grandchildren, Cindy Cressell of Radford, Michial "Link" Quesenberry, Tommy Quesenberry, Deborah Q. Funeral services will be at Oakey's South Chapel, 1 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Tom Stocks officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Thorn Springs Cemetery, Pulaski County. Memorials may be made to Rosalind Hills Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Oakey's South Chapel, Roanoke, is in charge of arrangements.

Helene Altizer Baugh, 91, of Oakhurst Avenue, Pulaski, Va., passed away at home on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, with her family at her side.

She was born in the Back Creek Community of Pulaski County on June 12, 1918 and graduated from Pulaski High School. Helene was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She and her husband, Lincoln Baugh, were charter members of Memorial Baptist Church where they both were very active over the years. She enjoyed cooking, playing bridge, square dancing and having family gatherings.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Garfield Altizer and Molly Jane Cox Altizer; brothers, Arko D. Altizer and A. G. Altizer; and sister, Ione Altizer Grantham.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Lincoln Baugh; daughters, Jayne Perala, of Roanoke, and Patsy Gilbert and her husband, Frank Gilbert, of Pulaski; granddaughter, Emily Gilbert, of Charlotte, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank all those who have helped Helene these past months: her wonderful care givers, Sonya Morefield, Myrna Robinson, Sandra Burton and Michelle Alley, who tenderly helped her to feel secure and comfortable each day and night; her physician, Dr. Donald Yoder, who always gave such kind and respectful professional care; her dedicated nurses from Advanced Home Health Care who provided her with excellent assistance; her neighbors, who so thoughtfully aided and supported her in many ways and her many friends and relatives who called, visited and sent cards.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2010, at Memorial Baptist Church, Pulaski with Pastor David Lones officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Thursday from noon until 2 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow in Thornspring Cemetery. Arthur Altizer Killed In Auto-Bus Smash-Up
Arthur G. Altizer, Jr., 24-year old employee of the Pulaski Veneer Corporation, was instantly killed about 5 o'clock Saturday morning when his automobile was involved in a head-on collision with a loaded Greyhound bus on US 11 about three and one-half miles east of Wytheville. Three persons were injured slightly when the bus, which was carrying 38 passengers, left the highway and crashed on it's right side. Immediately after the passengers climbed to freedom through the emergency exit, the bus caught fire and was totally destroyed.

The injured were Mrs. Philamena Negrito, of Yorktown. O., and Pfc and Mrs. Robert C. McIlwain, of Detroit. They were given first aid treatment at the Wytheville hospital and discharged. State Trooper W. J. Elliott, who investigated, reported. All the passengers traveling on the Winston-Salem to Charleston bus were transferred to other busses and continued their journey, the Wytheville passenger agent said.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Katherine Meredith Altizer, a daughter, Anna Jean, 3; an 18-months-old son, Roger Dean; his mother, Mrs. Arthur G. Altizer, Sr., of Walnut Avenue; one brother, Arko; and two sisters, Mrs. Lincoln Baugh, and Mrs. Arthur C. Grantham, all of Pulaski. (Katherine was about 5 months pregnant with their third child, Barbara Jane, when AG was killed.)
The victim was released from the U. S. army about a year ago under medical discharge because of a wound received while fighting in Belgium.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p. m. at Thornspring Methodist church, with the Rev. W. A. Warner in charge and the Revs. Clifton and Virgil Anderson assisting. Burial will be in Thornspring cemetery.

The body will remain at the home of his mother at 705 Walnut avenue until the hour of the funeral.

Truby Ellis Altizer, 86, of Radford, died Wednesday, March 30, 2005 in Carilion New River Medical Center. He was a retired employee of Lynchburg Foundry and a veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, Waddie and Agnes Smith Altizer; his brothers, William and Cody and their wives, Janice Sutherland and Mary Jane Cooper Altizer. Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Lois Kinder Altizer; a stepdaughter and her husband, Lynn and Greg Corson; step grandchildren, Laura, Daniel and Jennifer Corson; a sister, Claudine Miles; and nephews, William Altizer, Alan and Tony Miles; and a niece, Debra Curtsinger. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 3, 2005 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg. Lois Kinder Ferrell Altizer, 79, of Radford, died Saturday, July 23, 2005. After a lengthy illness, Lois Altizer was called home by her Heavenly Father. She passed away peacefully with her immediate family surrounding her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mrs. Helen Kinder Farmer and Mr. Marvin Kinder. Her first husband and father of her children, Mr. Leroy Ferrell also preceded her passing. Her husband, Mr. Truby Altizer, passed away in March 2005. Her only brother, Mr. Marvin (Bud) Kinder, Jr. also preceded her. Survivors include sisters, Mrs. Mary Jo (Charles) Eaton, Mrs. Margaret Lester; aunt, Mrs. Aileen Howell; daughter, Shari Lynn (Greg) Corson; son, Lloyd Ferrel; grandchildren, Laura Corson, Jennifer Corson, Daniel Corson, David Ferrel, Matthew Ferrel, and Robert Ferrel. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2005 at the Radford Christian Churchildren with the Rev. Andy Woodward officiating. Interment will follow in Sunrise Burial Park. On Tuesday, May 19, 2015, Claudine Altizer Miles, passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born on December 1, 1923 and grew up in Radford. She was preceded in death by her parents, Waddie and Agnes Altizer; brothers, William (Bill) Altizer, Emory (Cody) Altizer, Truby Altizer and son W. Alan Miles.

Left to cherish her memory are her son and daughter-in-law, David (Tony) Miles and Deborah McFarland Miles; daughter-in-law Shelia Palmer Miles; granddaughters, Christine Miles McCallister and husband Dougley McCallister, Reagan Miles, Monica Miles, Sarah Beth Miles; and only grandson, Cody-Alan Miles.

Claudine was a fearless woman who devoted her young adult life to raising her sons, Alan and Tony. She was a loving grandmother who adored her grandchildren and gave her time selflessly to each of them. 

Claudine will be remembered for her humor and wit which she often displayed to friends and family.

The Miles family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Heritage Hall for the loving care they provided Claudine. The family would also like to express their gratitude to her roommate, Ms. Callie, for all the love and attention she gave to Claudine.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2015, at Horne Funeral Home with a celebration of life service, officiated by Pastor Don Peters, held at 2 p.m. in the Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association.

Roanoke Times Fri, June 27, 2008 Kyle Morris Altizer, 90, of Dublin, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, June 25, 2008, from Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. She was born August 14, 1917, in Pulaski County, and was the daughter of the late Lillie Smith Morris and Jordan F. Morris. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Brady J. Altizer; an infant daughter, Peggy Ann Altizer; son, B.J. Altizer Jr.; grandson, Jeffrey Scott Altizer; sisters, Maggie, Ruby, Carrie, Metta and Claudia; and brothers, Malcolm, Bentley, Shirley and Roscoe. She was a loving and devoted mother, proud Nana and grateful sister. She was known to many as "Mrs. Kyle." She was a faithful and long-time member of Newbern Community Christian Church and was active in church functions until her declining health would not permit. She relished in the fact that she was the oldest member on roll. Kyle was a dedicated Christian that always strived to do for others. She delighted in cooking and preparing scrumptious meals for all to enjoy when her health allowed. Those left to cherish her memory are daughter and son-in-law, Dale and Gene Reece; grandson and wife, Derek and Rebecca Reece; granddaughter and boyfriend, Whitney Reece and Daniel Grim; great-granddaughter, Hunter, all of Snowville; sister, Lena Graham, of Dublin; sister and brother-in-law, Gertrude and Clayton Stiltner, of Cattlettsburg, Ky.; and daughter-in-law, Sharon Altizer, of Newbern. Also survived by a number of special nieces and nephews; many friends; her church family; and special family friend, Becky Cullip. The family is especially thankful to her sister, Lena, that took such good care of Mama; to Becky Cullip for the numerous good deeds she did to help Mama; and to Lila Turpin, that made her last days at home as pleasant as possible.
