a life lived for Christ. She was faithful to bear her loved ones up in
prayer continually, and we know our lives will feel her loss, but we know
she is with her Lord and Savior. Even in her last months, and her mind
diminishing, she still knew her Lord, and that she wanted to go home to be
with Him. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 16,
2010 at New Haven Baptist Church with Rev. Leon Wood and Rev. John Chambers

Roanoke Times, The (VA) -
Tuesday, March 23, 2010
A 1999 graduate of Floyd
County High School who was serving as a civil affairs officer in the Iraq
war has died in northern Iraq.
Army Reserve Spc. Steven Jesse Bishop, 29, of Christiansburg died of a
non-combat-related illness March 13 at Contingency Operating Base Speicher
in Tikrit.
Assigned to Company C of the 422nd Civil Affairs Battalion (Tactical),
based in Greensboro, N.C., his duties included speaking with key leaders,
gathering information, interviewing Iraqis and coordinating the commander's
emergency-relief program.
He joined the Army Reserve in April 2008 and attended basic training at
Fort Sill, Okla., and civil affairs advanced initial training at Fort
Bragg, N.C. He deployed to Iraq in June 2009.
He is the son of Clyde and Cleo Bishop of Floyd.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete last night.
-- Ellen Robertson
A 29-year-old soldier
from Christiansburg who worked to reconstruct bomb-shattered towns in
northwestern Iraq died of a noncombat-related illness last week, defense
officials said.
Spc. Steven Jesse Bishop, who worked in Roanoke processing
scrap metal into various products, died Saturday of an unspecified illness
after serving since June near the northwestern city of Tal Afar, the U.S.
Army said in a news release Wednesday.
As a soldier at war and as a civilian at home, Bishop's friends considered
him a methodical worker with a calm demeanor. Family members declined to be
interviewed.
"He stayed even-keeled all the time,"
his supervisor, Sgt. 1st Class Chris Kern, said over the phone. "He
was very mature, and that's the kind of person you wanted. He was not very
excitable."
Bishop grew up in Floyd County and was a starting tackle on the county's
high school football team until he graduated in 1999, coach Winfred Beale
said.
As a student and after graduating, he frequented restaurants such as D.J.'s
Drive In and listened to WSLC-FM, Star Country, said friend and high school
classmate Ben Hall.
He served as a volunteer firefighter with the Floyd County Fire Department
sometime between 2001 and 2005, and lived with his parents until 2007, Hall
said. In September that year, he bought a one-story, four-bedroom house off
of South Franklin Street in Christiansburg, according to town records.
During that time, he worked for Steel Dynamics in Roanoke, in a section
where he heated and pressed processed scrap metal, Hall said.
In Iraq, Kern said, Bishop worked in a four-person unit near Tal Afar as
part of the 422nd Civil Affairs Battalion, 352nd Civil Affairs Command,
U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command based in Fort
Bragg, N.C.
The city saw conflict as late as July and September, when suicide bombers
killed 41 people and two suspected insurgents were killed. But Bishop's
work entailed interviewing local religious and secular leaders and
arranging for the construction of schools, roads and plumbing to help
stabilize the region, Kern said.
In his six months there, his team completed about 50 projects, working 12-
to 18-hour days six days a week, Kern said. They were scheduled to return
to the United States in June.
From the trailer where and he and his three teammates lived, Bishop would
communicate over e-mail almost daily with friends and family in Southwest
Virginia.
"He was enjoying what he was doing," Hall said. "He talked real well about the military and his fellow
soldiers."

Southwestern Virginia in 1984, which became his home for the rest of his
life, with work-related interludes in North Carolina and New York. He
taught at Virginia Techs Upward Bound, as an adjunct instructor at New
River Community College, Coastal Carolina Community College, and as high

in Relational Teaching in Virginia schools and presented at educational
conferences at universities in Virginia and North Carolina. He published
articles on Relational Teaching in national journals on education.
Murrays poetry album, Walking with the Great Spirit with music by
ACourt Bason, was choreographed and performed at Virginia Tech by Carole
Crawford Smiths (former soloist with the Dance Theatre of Harlem) troupe
under her direction and with some segments with Carole herself dancing the
primary roles. He performed his poem Breathe in the Light at churches and
other venues throughout the east coast as a part of Kanta Bosniaks Sacred
Space Workshops and at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY, where he served
as Poet in Residence. As an actor and singer, Murray performed the male
lead in South Pacific with performances at Virginia Tech and Radford

Iva Mae Bower, 87, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday,
September 30, 2014. She was the daughter of the late Harvey and Lula Mae
Dobbins. She was predeceased by her sister, Ada Basham; and brother, Carl
Dobbins. She also was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Fred Lewis
Bower. She worked hard all her life, and was a
devoted mother. She was known as an excellent cook
and she loved her cats. She also enjoyed her neighbors and loved to share
old timey ways with them. Left to treasure her memory are her children,
Calvin Bower and wife, Mary of Salem, Ginger B. Conner of Virginia Beach,
and G.G. Bower and fianc, Mary Owens of Floyd. She will be lovingly
remembered by her grandchildren: Jessica Bean and husband, J.C. of Roanoke,
David Stump and wife Lisa, of Moneta, Teresa Basham and husband Dikki, of
Salem, along with Katrina Conner, Samuel Conner, and Benjamin Conner, all
of Virginia Beach. She had four great-grandchildren, Peyton James McGrady
and Delia Rose Bean of Roanoke, and Michael and Stephanie Stump of Moneta.
Also treasuring her memory is her "very special friend" and
companion, Bud Lorleberg of Floyd, who brought love and laughter into her
life for 14 years. Her children can never thank him enough for caring for
their mom. Gardner Funeral Home of Floyd, provided visitation on Friday,
October 3, 2014, where the family was from 6 until 8 p.m. Funeral service

Clifton Brammer, age 93,
was born on August 17, 1926, in Floyd, Virginia, to Bub and Ora Correll
Brammer "Granny Duck". The oldest of six siblings, Clifton served
in the United States Navy during World War II, during which time his father
passed away. Except for his Navy time and brief training in Chicago

moved to Arbor Ridge of Kernersville, N.C. to be closer to his daughter.
God called him home on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at Walnut Ridge Assisted

over 50 years at the New Haven Baptist Church. He served as a deacon for
those years as well as teaching Bible studies in his home, jail and prison
ministries, and fill-in pulpit supply in the area. He was a great
encouragement to many pastors and those in Christian service. He loved his
family and had many close friends. He was predeceased by his parents; his
wife, Eula Reed Brammer; and two brothers, Jack Brammer and Eddie Brammer.
Clifton is survived by two daughters, Sharon Allred of Kernersville, N.C.,
and Jo Anne Brammer of Weagamow Lake, Ontario, Canada. He was PaPa to two
grandsons, Billy Allred (Priscilla) of Winfield, Pa., and Jonathan Allred
of Winston-Salem, N.C.; as well as four great-grandchildren, Gracelyne,
Katherine, Aaron, and Nathan Allred of Winfield, Pa.; two sisters, Betty
Slusher (Bud) of Floyd, and Sue Young (the Rev. Ronald) of Fincastle, Va.;
a brother, Billy Brammer of Floyd; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held at the Gardner Funeral Home in Floyd on Friday evening,
January 10, 2020, from 6 until 8 p.m. The funeral was held at the New Haven
Baptist Church in Floyd on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at 11 a.m. with
burial at the Jacksonville Cemetery in Floyd. The family is very grateful
for the care provided at Arbor Ridge of Kernersville and Walnut Ridge
