Vergie Carr Headley, 85, of Danville, and formerly of Roanoke, died Tuesday, March 26, 1996, in a Danville hospital. 

She was the widow of S. K. (Bob) Headley; and a daughter of the late John Walter and Tida Woodard Carr. 

Surviving are two daughters and son-in-law, Darlene Headley Griffin and Michael T. Griffin, Crozet, and Janet Headley, Danville; two grandsons, Kenneth H. Shively, Danville, and Jacob C. Shively, Crozet; one brother, Roy Lee Carr, Roanoke; two sisters, Addie McCall, Roanoke, and Ruby English, Roanoke; two sisters-in-law, Cassie Carr, Roanoke, and Fannie Carr, Ridgeway; one brother-in-law, Edwin English, Roanoke. 

Funeral services will be at the graveside 11 a.m. Thursday, March 28, 1996, at Mt. View Cemetery, Vinton, with the Rev. Kevin B. Meadows officiating. Friends may call at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Ruby Carr English, 91, of Roanoke, passed away December 24, 2013. She was the youngest of 8 children born to John and Tida Carr from Bent Mountain. She grew up in Roanoke and graduated from Jefferson High School. She was the widow of E. R."Red" English, to whom she was married for 64 years. They were members of the 500 Club, the ELKs club, and numerous other social organizations. They were members of Blue Hills Golf Club where Ruby was a member of the Ladies Golf Association. She was an avid bowler at the Viking Lanes for many years. Ruby belonged to several bridge clubs and continued to play bridge until shortly before her death. She was a long time member of Grandin Court Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Michael; daughter-in-law, Jacqueline; grandchildren, Garrett, Lauren, and Hunter; sister-in-law, Mildred English; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Special thanks to caregiver Betty Conner and good friend and neighbor Barbara Coleman who helped Ruby to continue to live independently over the last several years.

The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel on Thursday December 26, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, December 27, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel with interment to follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. (Obituary courtesy of: Ralph Heady)

George Wesley Carr, 71, of Check, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2007. He was preceded in death by his parents, Posey Lee Carr and Lula Holland Carr. Being the last of ten sons, he was also preceded in death by nine brothers, Erby, Walter, Wayne, Alton, Raymond, Eugene, Elmer, Nelson and Glen Carr; a daughter, Sheila Elaine Carr; and a granddaughter, Brittany Anne Hartberger. George is survived by his daughter, Lee Anne Carr Hartberger and husband, Jamie Lee Hartberger; a son, John Wesley Carr; grandchildren, Jamie Aaron Hartberger, Julia Anne Hartberger, and Jordan Carr. He is also survived by a special sister-in-law, Pearl Carr, many special nephews and nieces including Jesse Carr and Troy Carr, and special friends that were considered as family, Dalton and Joey Smallwood. Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel, 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2007. Interment will follow in the Copper Hill Cemetery, Floyd County. Friends may call at Oakey's South Chapel from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel, 989-3131.

CARR, Etta Maye, 88, of Roanoke, died Saturday, October 21, 2000 in a local hospital.

Originally from Floyd County, Va., she lived her last years in Roanoke and was retired from Mitchells Clothing and Air-Lee Cleaners. She was a member of Havens Chapel United Methodist Church, Check, Va. and also attended Air-Lee Court Baptist Church.

Etta Maye was a daughter of the late Carey and Rejina Carr. She was also preceded in death by sisters and brothers-in-law, Ortha and Kyle Nolley, Audrey and Stanley Lawrence, brother, Ronceverte Carr and a niece, June L. James.

She was the beloved Aunt of nieces, Stanley Bea and husband, Frederick Harmon of Roanoke, Jarrette "Pinky" and husband, John Jinnette of Knoxville, Tenn., Diana
Lawrence Wimmer of Check; a nephew and wife, Cecil and Dorothy Carr, Check; sister-in-law, Hester Carr, also of Check; great-nieces, Kerry Clay Lawrence, Roanoke, Stacy and Hubert Barton of Radford; great-nephews, Chetley Harmon of Roanoke, Jerry and Wanda Carr of Check, Lyle and Jean Wimmer, Charlotte, N.C., Rene and Susan Wimmer of Salem. She will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Services will be conducted by Dr. Fred Austin 2 p.m. Monday, October 23, 2000 at Oakey's South Chapel. Interment will follow at the Iddings Cemetery, Floyd County. Flowers will be appreciated, however, those wishing to make memorials may consider a donation to the Floyd Parish Parsonage Fund, c/o Judy Wimmer, 915 Cambria St., N.W., Christiansburg, Va. 24073. Vera June Carr Thomas, 90, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 15, 2012. She was preceded in death by her husband, James William Thomas; parents, Isaac McKinley Carr and Elva Whitenack Carr; brothers, Harry Elsworth Carr and M.C. Carr Jr.; brothers-in-law, John Ellis Jr. and Clifton Clark; and a sister, Redell Carr Bryant. She was an employee of; K&W Cafeteria, and the Hardees at the corner of Williamson Rd. and Preston.

The family would like to express its thanks to the nurses, and staff of Berkshire Nursing and Rehab, for the love and care given to Vera.

Funeral service will be held at the graveside at 11 a.m. Monday, November 19, 2012, at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Charles "Chips" Doyle will officiate. Bobbie Carr Ellis, 86, of Roanoke, went to be with Jesus in her heavenly home on Friday, December 27, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ellis Jr.; father and mother, McKinley and Elva Carr; sisters, Redell Bryant and Vera Thomas; and brothers, Harry Carr and M.C. Carr Jr. Bobbie is survived by her sister, Elizabeth (Liz) Clark; sisters-in-law, Mary Miller and Betty Staples; brothers-in-law, Sammie Ellis and Robert Ellis; numerous nieces; and nephews; and a god-daughter, Cindy Jack.

Bobbie was a member of Patterson Memorial Grace Brethren Church serving in the Children/Infant department for many years. She worked for Double Envelope Corporation and was a homemaker for many years.

Glenwood Evans Carr, 69, of 76 Avon Avenue, died Monday afternoon (May 17, 2004) at his residence.

He was born July 15, 1934, in Floyd County, the son of the late John Oliver and Beatrice Woodward Carr.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the Wayne Hills United Methodist Church, Waynesboro Elks Lodge No. 2270 for 23 years, where he served as Exalted Ruler for two terms and presently served as trustee.

He served on the advisory board of the Salvation Army and was a past member of the United Way Foundation.

He retired as manager from Kroger of Waynesboro with 40 years of service.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Claudine Graham.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Sara Cook Carr I (she died 12-28-2010); a son, Glenwood "Woody" Carr Jr. and his wife, Susan Reid-Carr, of Midlothian; one daughter, Suzanne Carr Ramey and her husband, D.C., of Mebane, N.C.; one brother, Raymond Carr of Roanoke; and five grandchildren, Morgan Carr, Austin Carr, Hunter Carr, Sydney Ramey and Charlie Ramey.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Funeral Service by Pastor Debra Copeland.

Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery with rites conducted by Waynesboro Elks Lodge 2270.

Active pallbearers will be Frank Roetto, Tom Bryant, Feddie Abshire, Ed Croft, Bobby Hull, Jim Goode, Carl Simmers and Harry Quick. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Waynesboro Elks Lodge No. 2270 and members of the Men's Club of Wayne Hills United Methodist church.

Leroy Edward Carr, 78, of Floyd passed away Monday, July 3, 2006. He was born on November 15, 1927 to the late Roy and Dorothy Carr. He served his country during World War II in the United States Army. Leroy retired from John Hancock's/Roanoke Electric Steel. He loved his Lord and was a faithful member of the House of Prayer. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years and 10 months, Marie Thompson Carr I; three children and spouses, Michael and Rosemary Carr of Floyd, Sherry and Ronald Hartsock of Bassett, Darrell Carr and Cassie of Floyd; five grandchildren, Christy Carr, Brittany Carr, Amanda Carr, all of of Floyd, Jonathan Hartsock and Sarah Hartsock of Bassett; brother, Byron Carr and wife, Lorene, of Copper Hill; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Carter and Hilda Thompson; brothers-in-law and spouses, J.C. and Arlene Thompson, Billy and Wanda Thompson; and many nieces and nephews. Allie M. Blackwell, 83, of Floyd, passed away Monday, December 1, 1997, in Skyline Manor Nursing Home. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kyle S. Blackwell. 

She is survived by two daughters, Linda Blackwell Bell, Floyd, Wanda Blackwell, Floyd; one grandson, Christopher Woods, Floyd; one great-grandson, Dylan Woods, Sanford, N.C. 

Funeral services will be Thursday, December 4, 1997, at 11 a.m. at Gardner Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Womack officiating. Interment will be in Jacksonville Cemetery. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Wednesday at Gardner Funeral Home, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m.
