Friday night, July 14, 1933, Landon S. Dickerson, died in Wythe County, after a lingering illness, at the age of 81-years and 6-months.  He was raised in this (Floyd) county, being the oldest child of the late Eld. and Mrs. Amos (Mary Ann Slusher) Dickerson, near (Floyd) town.  He leaves a son and daughter, Eddie Dickerson and Mrs. Bertie Phillips and several grandchildren.  He is also survived by two brothers, George W. and David M. Dickerson, near (Floyd) town, and two sisters, Mrs. Wade W. Thompson and Mrs. J. M. Simmons, as well as a host of other relatives.  His wife (Elizabeth Kitterman) preceded him a few years ago.  He was buried Sunday in the Little Vine cemetery at Sylvatus, after the funeral by Eld. George Williams, in the presence of a large crowd of relatives and friends, which attested to the high esteem in which he was held.

The body of Eddie Hamilton Dickerson, 69, who died at his home on Martin avenue Wednesday will remain at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home until funeral arrangements can be made.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Virginia Melton Dickerson; two sons Raymond E. Dickerson, US navy, and Forrest Edgar Dickerson, Washington, DC; one daughter Betty Sue Dickerson of Pulaski. Also, one sister, Mrs. W. E. Phillips, Snowville.

Funeral services for Eddie H. Dickerson, 69, who died at his home last Wednesday, will be held tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock from Vaughan-Guynn chapel with burial to follow in the family cemetery near Snowville. The Rev. George Williams will be in charge of the service.

Mary Dickerson Phillips, formerly of Snowville, died Saturday in a Baltimore, MD. hospital. 

She was the widow of the late W. E. Phillips.

Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Effie Alexander of Christiansburg, Mrs. Arlie O'Dell and Mrs. Edith Elkins. both of Draper, M.E, Billie Stevens of New York City and Mrs. Cora Brunella of Bethel Park, Md. 

She was preceded in death by two sons, Landon Phillips and Willie Phillips and one daughter, Alma (Jackie) Davidson. 

The body is being brought to the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Christiansburg where the body will lie in state one hour before the funeral.

The Library of Virginia in their Virginia Historical Inventory at Record VHIR/10/0567 has The Coffee Dickerson Home in its Historical Inventory. The following information was found. (Note: This home does not exist today -10/2001)
1. A Map of the Home's Location - Five miles north of Floyd, VA.  From Floyd, VA go two miles on Route #8; cross #6; cross west fork of Little River and go three miles northeast.  House is situated about fifteen feet from road on southeast side.

4. Description - This house is the original structure and has not been remodeled.
5. Historical Significance:
The land near cemetery on east side of the house was known as "Buffalo hip" because buffalo once roamed through the woods there.
There are a great many antiques in the home:
1. Old maple bed, plain design, about 2 1/2 feet high.  The bed is about 140 years old.  It has never been painted.
2. Old chest and bureau, made of maple, very plain, about 106 years old.  They were given to Elizabeth Wickham and Moses Dickerson, Jr. as a wedding present by her father who made them.  The marriage occurred in 1831.
3. Old oak spinning wheel, not very large, has three legs.
4. Over one of the doors on the northeast side of the house are deer horns to put the rifles on.
5. In the front hall there is a water wheel.  This was built by Neal (Cornelius) Dickerson, a son of Coffee Dickerson.  The spring which furnished water for the household was across the river being in front of the dwelling.  The water had to be carried across a bridge before this wheel was built. A post or pole was set up and a double rope or cord was drawn across this pole over the river and fastened to the wheel.  When the wheel was turned the bucket was sent across the river where it went in the spring, was filled with water and came back.  This method of getting water is not used now.

FLOYD - Edna Dickerson Harman, 89, died Wednesday, July 23.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Harman, and sisters, Reva Graham and Juanita Cumberland.

Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Harman of Christiansburg, Ralphelene Huff of Floyd, Joyce Bowling of Ferrum and Sue Abshire of Floyd; sister, Verbena Walters; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and five step great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted today (Friday, July 25) from Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren at 2 p.m. by Rev. Marvin Wade and Rev. Richard Thomas. Burial will be in Beaver Creek Cemetery.

Gardner Funeral Home in Floyd is in charge of arrangements.

DICKERSON, John W., Jr., 75, of Vinton, completed his journey from this life, Friday, November 24, 2000. He was born January 16, 1925, the son of the late John W. and Dora W. Dickerson, Sr. He was a brother to the late Melvin J. Dickerson. John graduated from Floyd High School and immediately volunteered for military service in the U. S. Navy. He served in the South Pacific Theatre during World War II. He worked for and retired from Norfolk & Western Railroad after 39 years of service. He served as Secretary and Treasurer of Local 629 of the United Transportation Union for 20 years. Those surviving him are his beloved wife of 52 years, Ethel L. Dickerson; a daughter, Sharon D. Patsell of Vinton; a son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Debra C. Dickerson, III of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Shane M. and Stacie M. Patsell of Vinton, Amy Jo Dickerson of Harrisonburg, and Jason T. Dickerson of Fredericksburg. Also surviving are one sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Fred Graham of Orlando, Fla.; many nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law; also, a very devoted friend, Jack E. Cregger. Funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, November 27, 2000, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with Rev. Byron Greene and Rev. Chris Monroe officiating. Interment will follow in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens.

THE DEATH ANGEL
Miss Malera Dickerson, daughter of the late Coffee Dickerson, died at the home of her mother last Tuesday morning of heart trouble. She had been sick for several months and the death was not unexpected. She was born Apr. 14, 1864 and died Aug 26, 1902, being 37 years, 4 months and 12 days old. She bore her sickness with great patience and fortitude and seemed to think she would get well. A short time before her death she realized that she must die and prayed for the Lord to take her home. She was a very estimable lady and was held in the highest esteem by everyone. Burial services were conducted at the house yesterday evening by Elder P. G. Lester, after which he was laid to rest in the family burying ground amid a large of sorrowing relatives and friends. She leaves a mother, three sisters, six brothers and a large connection of friends to mourn her death.We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.

Rhoda Wilmoth Dickerson Lancaster, 94, of 307 Forest St. in Martinsville, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at her home.

She was born in Floyd County on July 5, 1913, to Moses and Lucy Elizabeth Burke Dickerson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivron Carl Lancaster; and three brothers, Elonzo Dickerson, Carless Dickerson and Elba Dickerson.

She retired from Sale Knitting Company and also worked for several years at Harold’s Grocery on Starling Avenue in Martinsville.

She was a longtime member of Starling Avenue Baptist Church, where she had taught Sunday school, was Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) president, and was a member of the Adult Fellowship and senior choir.

Surviving is a daughter, Wilma Jean Lancaster of the home.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville with the Rev. Dr. David Adkins officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour before the service Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to Starling Avenue Baptist Church, 932 Starling Ave., Martinsville, Va. 24112.
