Mrs. Martha E. Spangler, wife of James S. Spangler, formerly of this county, but lately of Vinton, Va., died Tuesday morning in a hospital in Roanoke, where she had been operated on for appendicitis some five or six days earlier.
She was a Miss Reed before her marriage, daughter of Staunton Reed, near Alum Ridge, and was about 30 years of age, and a prominent lady. She was married to J. S. Spangler a little over 11 years ago, and to their union five children were born. She leaves these little children, her husband and a host of other relatives to mourn her sad departure.
Her body was brought back to her old home and laid to rest.  We extend deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones.

Dewey Reed, son of Mr. & Mrs. Staton Reed, near Sowers, died Friday evening about 7 o'clock. He was a nurse at Dr. King's hospital in Radford and had been for several months and where he died. He seemed to be in his usual health when he dressed to make a call and was seen to stagger and fell and died instantly.
He was 30 years of age and a promising young man and was popular with all the inmates at the hospital.
He was married six months ago to Miss Livia Reed. He was brought back and buried Sunday at the home of his parents after the funeral was preached by Eld. A. N. Hylton, assisted by Dr. Akers and Eld. Sam Reed, young Mr. Reed being a member of the Brethren church. A large crowd and most of the nurses from the hospital attended the funeral and burial.

Opal Reed Dudley, 89, of Radford, Va., passed away on Monday, July 6, 2009.

She was preceded in death by her parents, B.J. and Mae Dulaney Reed; husband, Vaughan Dudley; a son, Michael Dudley; and two grandchildren, Mark and David Dudley.

Survivors include her three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Lois Dudley, of Radford, Larry and Barbara Dudley, of Roanoke, and J.C. and Nanci Dudley, of Christiansburg; daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Gary Sparks, of Radford; 10 grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; two brothers and sister-in-law, Denver and Pat Reed, of North Carolina, and C.A. and Fay Reed, of Florida; two sisters, Orpha Lawrence, of Vinton, and Basil Hancock, of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2009, at the Belview United Methodist Church in Radford with the Rev. Sebert Rorrer and the Rev. Aaron Fitch officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunrise Burial Park in Radford.

Velma Mae Reed Townley, 95 of Floyd, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 13, 2021 with her children by her side.
Velma was a humble, Christian woman who loved her family and always put them first. Velma worked many years at Floyd Garment Factory before retiring to take care of her mother. Velma was a lifelong member of Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren.
She was the daughter of the late Walter Sidney Reed and Amanda Ellen Keith Reed. She is also preceded by her husband of 56 years, Sanford Reed Townley; brothers and sisters, Edna Bishop, Elvin Reed, Ima Cannaday, Elsie Dudley, and Melvin Reed; and special friend, Laureen Reed.

Survivors include her children, Sandra & Tom Vaughn, Shirley McKinney, Sam & Loretta Townley, and Joan Townley; seven grandchildren, Lynn Coffey, Tina Vaughn, Sharon Quesenberry, John Vaughn, Wynn Boone, Deanna Johnston, and Autumn Garofola; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Velma Reed and Nell Townley; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, Mattie Harris.

Mary Alice Reed Vaughn of Richmond, TX, formerly of Roanoke passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday December 17, 2017.

Mary was a native of Floyd County and was preceded in death by her parents Dewey P. and Lula Maye Reed, infant daughter Becky Lynn Vaughn and friend and companion Al Folden. She was a registered nurse for many years at Lewis-Gale Hospital and retired from the VA Medical Center in Salem. Mary was a member and deacon of the Oak Grove Church of the Brethren in Roanoke and attended Preston Trail Community Church in Frisco, TX for the past seven years. She was also a member of the Lewis-Gale Alumni Association.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Kathy Vaughn and friend Leon Robertson of Roanoke; Susan and Rene’ Wimmer of Richmond, TX; Sherry and Tim Barbour of Roanoke. Grandchildren, Kayla Wimmer of Plano, TX; Dylan and Hannah Wimmer of Rogers, AR and Lea Barbour of Roanoke. Brother, Roy and Karen Reed of Roanoke. Her beloved puppies, Lola and Maggie. Other extended family members, friends and co-workers.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Friday, December 22, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Oak Grove Church of the Brethren, 2138 McVitty Road, Roanoke, VA with Pastor Tim Harvey officiating. Interment will follow at Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Floyd, VA.
Family and friends may visit Thursday, December 21st from 6 to 8 PM at Oakey’s South Chapel in Roanoke. In lieu of flowers, Mary requests that donations be made to Oak Grove Church of the Brethren, 2138 McVitty Road SW, Roanoke, VA 24018 or to the American Cancer Society.

Pattie Akers Reed, 91, of Floyd, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2009. She was born on August 27, 1917, to the late George William and Sarah Lane Akers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Raymond Reed.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Freeman Cockram, of Floyd, Shirley and Harry Sears, of Mount Carbon, W.Va.; five grandchildren and spouses, David and Beverly Cockram, Patricia Parsley, Jeanette and Stanley Chaffin, Lisa and Michael Bowman, Kimberly and Brian Williams; 10 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson; two half-brothers, Henry Akers, Russell Akers; two half sisters, Mary Alice Akers, Linda Duncan.

Surviving are his wife Bernice Bond Reed, Floyd; daughter and son-in -law, Treva and Clarence Reed, Roanoke; two sons and daughter-in-law Elvin and Betty Reed, Floyd; Menis Reed, Check; daughter-in-law Elanor Reed, Floyd; 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister Nina Mitchell; brother Ola Reed; both of Floyd. 
Funeral Saturday 11am at Woods Funeral home with the Rev. Richard Thomas and the Rev. Roy Turpin and Rev. Hebron Quesenberry officiating and interment in the Beaver Creek Cemetery to follow. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday at the Woods Funeral home.

Ola Peyton Reed "Ole" FLOYD, Va. - Saturday, January 4, 2014, a son of the Living God found his way home to the Father. Ola Peyton Reed "Ole", 96, was born on December 22, 1917, to the home of Noah Clayton Reed and his wife, Susan Ellen Weeks Reed of the Wills Ridge area of Floyd County. He was born into a hardworking and godly family of three sisters and one brother, Gracie Pearl Reed m. William Kyle Reed, Nina Alice Reed m. Lewis Mitchell, Bertha Reed m. Swanson Sowers, and Asa Clayton Reed m. Polly Bernice Bond. Descendants of these sisters and brother will remember Ole as a quiet spiritual uncle with a sparkle in his blue eyes and a subtle sense of humor. Ole married Clara McManaway in 1936. Clara passed away a year later due to complications with pneumonia. As a young man, Ole built racers from old trucks, he dreamed of riding a motorcycle and with his friends played music for dances and gatherings around the community. In the late 1930's, Ole met the feisty and easy to laugh Lillian Edith Graham of the Sowers Mill Dam area. They married in 1941. They became a devout couple and used their musical talents to make a joyful noise to the Lord. As the "Singing Reeds," they provided spiritual music for the Floyd area community through WGFC Radio. For many years they provided for their church community, Reeds Mission, a facility for worship services. They celebrated life and the Lord together until 2006 when Lillian went home laughing to the Father. To everyone around him, Mr. Ole Reed's life served as an example of humble servitude to the Lord God and of acceptance and understanding of friends, neighbors and family with their many gifts and different outlooks on life. He was with people as he was with his little stray dog, "Gorgeous." He took them into his life and fed their scarred and hungry souls. Left to celebrate his life are many, many nieces and nephews, neighbors, friends and the church families. Through his final years of life, friends, neighbors and family who shared his life were Corrine Sowers, Frances Bishop, Mattie Harris, Carolyn and J.C. Holden, Junior Harris, Jerry Reed, Ruby and Richard Sutphin, Virgie Quesenberry, Russell Akers, Mary Helm, Neal Montgomery, Dean Graham, Larry Myers, Matthew Reinhardt, Dustin Black, Jared Black, Robyn Jones, Linda Belcher, Jerry Long and Catherine Pauley, the folks from Plenty who brought fresh garden produce, the wonderful people at Amedisys, who were with Ole for several months (Cindy, Sarah, Cliff, Troy, Julie and Heather), and the members of his church families. Ole touched so many lives that it is impossible to mention everyone. They should know they were cared about. A service was conducted by Pastor J.C. Holden of Granny's Chapel and by Pastor Clyde Bishop of Floyd Church of God. Services were held at Gardner Funeral Home Chapel in Floyd 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2014.
