She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Peter B. Radford; daughter, Marie Radford; grandson, Shirley Radford; granddaughter, Barbara Taylor; great-grandson, Carl Lee Taylor, and infant great-great-grandson. "Mama" was baptized into the Red Oak Grove Church of the Brethren in April of 1915 and remained faithful until death. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Ora R. and Ewell V. Huff, Floyd; two sons and daughters-in-law, Garfield and Velma Radford, Floyd, MacRae and Lois Radford, Collinsville; two half-sisters, Daisy Sweeney, Floyd, Weeda Layman, Roanoke; four grandchildren, Annie Ruth Wood, Dorsey V. Huff, Joyce H. Reed, Shawn R. Quesenberry; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, December 21, 1995, at the Red Oak Grove Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Elbert Lee Naff and the Rev. Lawrence J. Stevens officiating. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Maberry Funeral Home. Sweeney: 1-27-2011 of Salem, VA. 2011 Obit of Allene Gertrude (Vest) Sweeney: ROANOKE TIMES, Jan 29, 2011 (src: Find A Grave) Allene Vest Sweeney, 96, of Salem, and formerly of Floyd, entered into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, January 27, 2011, with her family by her bedside. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred D. Sweeney; four sisters; and five brothers. Allene was the daughter of John Henry and Pallie Vest, of Check, VA. Fred and Allene were instrumental in founding the Floyd Church of the Nazarene where Allene served as missionary President for many years and enjoyed working in the nursery. The family moved to the Roanoke Valley in 1956 where they supported growth in the Garden City Church of the Nazarene and later the Hollins Church of the Nazarene where she received special recognition for 20 plus years of service in the Nursery Department. Surviving are her children, Freddie Dalton (Bill), Susie Poff, and Audrey Poff (Wilson), all residing in the Roanoke area, Betty Rodabaugh (Larry), of Milwaukee, WI, Doris Moses (Joe), of Nashville, TN, Lynwood Sweeney (Skip), of Helen, GA, and Wayne Sweeney (Janette), of Salem. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren; 32 greatgrandchildren; 15 great-greatgrandchildren; brother, Horace Vest; and sister, Allie Vest, of Check, VA. Born June 23, 1909, in Floyd, Va., she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to all who knew her. Her passion for God and her family marked a life spent loving and giving to others. She was the daughter of the late E. K. and Leilia Sweeney, and preceded in death by her husband, William D. Layman; infant son, Robert Carlton Layman; sister, Daisy; and brothers, Fred, Claude and M.L. Sweeney. Weda was instrumental in founding Layman Candy Company in Salem, Va., with her late husband and worked there well into her 80's. She was a charter member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in 1932 and was the first woman to sit on their church council. At the time of her death she was a member of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. Her lifelong love for her family, church, and friends has been an inspiration to all. Surviving are her daughter, Juanita Layman Neely, of Roanoke; granddaughters, Judy Neely Ross and husband, Mickey, of Salem, Janet Neely Surratt and husband, Harry, of Roanoke, and Jeri Neely Shapiro and husband, Howard, of Roanoke. Also surviving are her great-grandchildren, Scott Thomasson and wife, Mandy, Justin, Jordan and Hollyn Keen, Harrison, Elizabeth and Sarah Surratt and Jason Ross; and grandson-in-law, Kenny Keen, all of Roanoke. Weda also leaves behind many nieces, and nephews of Roanoke and Floyd who have been so faithful to her. Weda's family would like to extend a very special thank you to her loving caregivers, Joyce Vert, Michele and Nicole; and a special thanks to Dr. William Fintel and his staff at Oncology Associates and the staff of Good Samaritan Hospice. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, February 11, 2008, at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road by the Rev. Philip Bottomley. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. House in Cappahosic (Gloucester), Virginia. Manning
loved all things connected to the commercial water business and these
feelings stayed strong all his life. Manning was preceded in death by his
parents, Hamilton Manning Lawson Sr. and Pollyanna Kelly Lawson; his first
wife Carol Hughes Lawson and his second wife Iris Sweeney Lawson. He is survived by his four daughters,
Paige Lawson Slayton (Kenny) of Virginia Beach, Nanette Lawson Greeley (John)
of Cedar Park, Texas, Molly Kelly Lawson, Heather Lawson Moore (Kyle) of
Williamsburg; two brothers, Michael Kelly Lawson (Penney) of Houston, Texas
and Joseph G. "Pete" Lawson of Roanoke; and, one sister, Deedy Lawson Mason (Buz) of
Newport News. Manning had numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, and
was the adored Grandpa Lawson to Kai, Kira and Kensington Moore. A celebration of Manning's life will be
on Saturday, September 20, 5 to 8 pm at the Hampton Yacht Club. In honor of

of Ballard and Blanche King Sweeney, she had been a longtime Hampton
resident. Mrs. Lawson was a graduate of Radford College and taught math at
Hampton High School for 37 years, retiring in 2009. She was a member of First
United Methodist Church Hampton and the Hampton Education Association. Mrs. Lawson is survived by her husband,

Virginia Beach, Nan L. Greeley and husband, John of Cedar Park, Texas, Molly

Born in Floyd, Va., on January 24,1913, she was the daughter of the late Peter E. and Cameron Sweeney. She and Walter A. Wilson Sr., of Willis, Va., were wed in April of 1934. A lifelong teacher, she earned a teaching certificate from Radford College in 1931 and went back to Radford and earned a college degree in 1951. She began her teaching career in 1932 at Toncray on Black Ridge and later taught in several one room schools and at Floyd County High School in Floyd, Va. In the mid 1950's the family moved to Roanoke, Va., where she taught at Belmont Elementary and later located to Fairfax, Va., where Mrs. Wilson taught at Oakton Elementary and then concluded her teaching career with a 19-year run at Jermantown Elementary School in the City of Fairfax. After retiring from teaching in 1973, Margaret moved back to her cherished Floyd County where she and her second husband, Hermon Hargrove, enjoyed traveling and gardening. Later she lived quietly, except for the night on the town for her 95th birthday where she flat-footed at the Floyd Country Store Friday Night Jamboree, and always enjoyed the visits from her large family and many friends. Margaret is survived by her sister, Lois Poff, of Floyd, Va.; her sons and daughters-in-law, Walter Jr. and Dorothy Wilson, of Fairfax, Sam and Leah Wilson, of Fredericksburg, Pete Wilson, of Fairfax, and Paul and Lee Wilson, of Oregon; daughters, Pauline "Polly" Wilson Eckels, of Floyd, and Lena Wilson Bussey, of Floyd; her grandchildren, Walter "Kiz" Wilson III, James Eckels, Kelly Wilson, Mark Wilson, Jane Eckels, Jill Eckels, Wendy W. Young Sweeney, 93, of Christiansburg and formerly of Floyd, passed away on
Friday, January 30, 2015. Born in February 1921 in Floyd County, Minnie was
the sixth child of the late Dallas and Mary Jones Young. She was predeceased
by her husband, Thomas Strickler Sweeney; their daughter, Jeanette; and
Minnie's six brothers and sisters, Herman Young, Ralph Young, Jeffrey Young,
Annie Young Hungate, Pearl (Dollie) Young Lee and Lera Young Perdue. In
1940, she married Thomas Strickler (Strick) Sweeney. Their daughter,
Jeanette, was born in 1941. Jeanette was a special needs child that Minnie
lovingly cared for in their home for 27 years. For the majority of her life,
Minnie and her husband, Strick, lived on a farm in the Alum Ridge section of
Floyd County where they worked until 1987. After retiring from the farm, they
lived in the Harvestwood area of Floyd County until her husband's death in
December 1996. Minnie
and her sister, Dollie, then moved to Christiansburg, where they enjoyed many
good years together. Minnie was known for her love of nature and the
outdoors, her sense of humor, her skills as a seamstress and doll maker, her
green thumb and her delicious country cooking. She will be greatly missed by
many, including several nieces and nephews, friends, and loving caregivers. Funeral
services will be conducted noon Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at Gardner
Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Todd Triplett officiating. Interment will
follow at Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Gardner
Funeral Home on Wednesday one hour before the time of the funeral service. In
lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to
Good Samaritan Hospice in Christiansburg, Virginia. Condolences to the family

Lillard was born January 8, 1921, to the late James Grover Cleveland Swinney

include a sister, Emma Jean Fletcher of Santa Ana, California; brothers,
Albert M. Swinney, Sr. of Elon and George S. Swinney of Eden; and numerous
nieces and nephews. In
addition to her parents, Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; a

– Clarence W. Swinney, 92, of Highland Avenue transitioned to his heavenly
home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, October 13, 2017 at 10:14 p.m.
A
native of Greensboro, NC, he was the husband of the late Katherine
"Kitty" Swinney and the son of the late Rev. George W. Swinney and
the late Etta Dalton Swinney. He was a lifelong member of Glen Hope Baptist
Church and a veteran of the United States Air Force. Drafted at age 17, he
was assigned to the Second Air Force and stationed in Clovis, NM. His three
years in the Air Force were spent playing baseball in the Second Air Force
League traveling the Southwestern United States. He attended a Yankees
training camp and was chosen by Galax to play in the Blue Ridge League. A
graduate of Elon College, he was an avid golfer and retired from Kayser Roth Corporation. Survivors
include his children, Charles Swinney (Kay) of Graham, Kathy Loy Sorrell
(Rick) of Burlington; daughter-in-law, Terri Swinney of Lenoir City, TN; four
grandchildren, Matt Swinney, Keith Swinney, Jr., David Swinney and Allison
Loy; a great-grandson, Keith Swinney, III; sisters, Hazel Jarrett (Ralph) of
Burlington and Yvonne Vanhoy of Greensboro;
brother, Rev. Don Swinney (Jane) of Graham and special friends George and
Diane Hill. In
addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter,
Deborah Gay Swinney; son, Keith Swinney; granddaughter, Jenna Ann Loy;
sister, Irene Vaughn; and brother, Vernon Swinney. The
funeral service will be conducted at Glen Hope Baptist Church on Tuesday,
October 17 at 12:00 noon by Pastor Don Swinney with the family receiving
friends from 10:45 until 11:45 a.m. prior to the service at the church.
Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. At other times the family will
be at his residence and the residence of his daughter Kathy Sorrell. The

- Vernon Eugene Swinney, 81, of Burlington went home to be with the Lord on
Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at Alamance Regional Medical Center. He was
born in Alamance County to the late Rev. George W. Swinney and Etta Gay
Dalton Swinney and was married to Judith Dale Swinney, who survives. Vernon
was co-owner of Glencoe Carpet Mill and was a member of Glen Hope Baptist
Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and competed professionally in
fishing tournaments. Vernon was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving
during the Korean Conflict. He is
survived by his wife; children, Tommy Swinney and wife Elizabeth of
Greensboro, Kim Walker and husband Steve of Winston-Salem, Linda Spivey and
husband Chris of Kernersville and Scott Swinney of West Chester, Ohio;
stepsons, William Dixon and Scott Dixon; grandchildren, Christopher Spivey
and wife Kristy, Frances Anne Spivey, Andrew Swinney and Trevor Dixon;
siblings, Clarence Swinney and wife Kitty, Hazel Burke Jarrett and husband
Ralph, the Rev. Don Swinney and wife Jane, Yvonne Van Hoy and husband B.H. He
was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Irene Swinney Vaughn. A
memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel
by the Rev. Larry Redding and the Rev. Don Swinney. The family will receive
friends from noon until 1:45 p.m. Saturday prior to the service at the
funeral home. The
family would like to thank the nurses and staff of White Oak Manor for taking
such good care of Mr. Swinney. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made
