"William Sowers, first son of Jacob and Catherine, left his home in Alum Ridge section in the early 1840's and moved to another section of the county where he bought land almost in the shadow of Buffalo Mountain, not far from the Carroll County line.  While the distance was not great, it was remote and isolated from his old home and family because of the poor roads and transportation of that time.  He worked hard and prospered and accumulated nearly 400 acres of land.  His will was made Feb 16, 1862, and probated July 1, 1863. William and Rhoda are buried in a hill-top cemetery on their farm.  The hand carved tombstones give their names but not the dates of birth and death."

SOWERS, Oakie F., 91, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, January 29, 1994, to be with our Lord. He was a member and former deacon at the New Life Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was preceded in death by his sons, Oliver and Dexter Sowers; four brothers, Olin, Tellie, John and Lawrence Sowers. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Lillian Harris Sowers; daughters and sons-in-law, Learlene and Alton Wilmer, Hilda and Wilton Slone, Zennia and LeRoy Crouch all of Roanoke, Norma Jean and Jack Scaggs, Bedford, Janette S. Roberson, Roanoke; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Hall, Floyd, Celia Lam of Montvale, Vivian Helms, Floyd. Funeral services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Monday at Oakey's North Chapel by the Rev. Walter L. Wood. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Lillian Harris Sowers, 100, of Vinton, went to her heavenly home on Friday, February 23, 2007. She was born on June 17, 1906 in Floyd, Va. Lillian was the eldest daughter of the late James Harris and Prudence Harris, also preceding her in death was her husband, Oakie F. Sowers; two sons, Oliver and Dexter Sowers; nine brothers and sisters. She is survived by five daughters, Janette Roberson, Zennia and husband Leroy Crouch, Learlene and husband Alton Wilmer, Hilda and husband Al Robers, Norma Jean and husband Jack Scaggs; numerous grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren. She will always be remembered as a devoted and loving mother and family member. Lillian was a member of New Life Temple for 60 years. She and her husband owned a farm in the Hollins area and sold produce on the City Market for 30 years. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Walter L. Wood officiating. The interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Oakey's North Chapel, 362-1237.

Vivian Sowers Helms, 97, of Willis, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 24, 2012. Vivian was born on January 3, 1915, to the late Eli and Virginia L. Weddle Sowers. Also preceding her in death were her siblings, brothers, John, Oakie, Lawrence, Tellie, and Olen Sowers; and sisters, India Sowers, Margaret S. Hall and Celia S. Lam.

She was the widow of Frank Vincent Helms, deceased May 5, 1950; son-in-law, Ronald James Thompson; and great- granddaughter, Jessica Mychael Danieley.

Vivian was a member of Harris Chapel United Methodist Church and attended Willis UMC after moving to Willis in 1990. She retired from Willis Elementary School Cafeteria in 1985 with 31 years of service. She also worked part time at the Mabry Mill Restaurant for a number of years. Prior to 1954, Vivian was the Harris Central switchboard operator, working from her home, for the Ballard Telephone Exchange (Citizens Telephone Cooperative) for many years. During her retirement she enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, quilting, card games, reading and visiting with family and friends.

"Our memories of Mom will be forever cherished and never forgotten."

BLACKSBURG — Snowie Sowers Bolt, 90, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at Liberty House Nursing Home, Clifton Forge.

She was born in Floyd County on Feb. 23, 1907, to the late Lewis and Iowa Sowers. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Vernie Ray Bolt; two sisters Darie Sowers & Lillie Matherly; two brothers, Mawyer Sowers & Paul Sowers. She was a member of the Montgomery Baptist Church in Blacksburg.

She is survived by 2 sons and daughter in laws, Bartley & Gereda Bolt, Washington DC; Rolofe & Georgia Bolt; Millboro; five sisters; Lena Dowdy, Radford; Mae Hayes, Salem; Clara Saunders, Radford; Bertha Keith, Blacksburg; Ruth McGrady, Christiansburg; a brother Irvin Sowers, Floyd; three grandsons, David Bold, Gary Bolt, Scott Bolt, a granddaughter Janet Welty; four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday Sept 22, in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Sidney Rakes officiating. Interment followed in tehe Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. Arrangements by the McCoy Funeral Home.

Ruth Virginia Sowers, age 91, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at Radford Nursing and Rehab Center.

She was born in Blacksburg on June 11, 1913, to the late Jahu Wyatt Matherly and Mary Ann Whitaker Matherly. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Mowyer Martin Sowers; and a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Woods Sowers.

She was a longtime member of the Wesleyan Community Church, Blacksburg.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Garland E. and Margareta Sowers of Fairlawn, Marvin Wayne Sowers of Christiansburg, Donnie L. and Linda Sowers of Christiansburg;
six grandchildren, Sylvia Caldwell, Crystal Gilbert and husband Greg, Eddie Sowers and wife Peggy, Roy Sowers and wife Jo, Mark Sowers and wife, Kimberly, and Eric Sowers; four great-grandchildren, Brian Sowers, Amanda Caldwell, Lindsay Sowers, and Ashley Virginia Sowers; and two sisters, Marie "Micki" McKinney and Reba Fleshman. 

The funeral will be conducted Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Jerry Dowdy and Ron Hodge officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wesleyan Community Church, 1521 South Main Street, Blacksburg, VA 24060.

FLOYD, Va. Irvin Lewis Sowers, 92, went to be with his heavenly Father on Friday, March 17, 2017, at his home surrounded by family. He was the son of Lewis and Iowa Sowers.

He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Charlotte Troutt and Dale Browning, as well as nine siblings.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 68 years, Eula Gaye Sowers; two daughters, Carolyn Troutt of Floyd and Diane (Gratton) Browning of Floyd; one son, Michael (Lona) Sowers of Floyd; one sister, Ruth McGrady of Christiansburg; his grandchildren, Vicky Browning Belcher of Collinsville and her fiancé, George D. Spangler, Rodney Troutt of Floyd, and April Goforth; great-grandchildren, Michelle, Christy, Christopher, Cathleen, Celena, Eric, Cameron, Jaden and Alana; great-great-grandchildren, Jonathan Dale, Sierra, Coy, Camden and Janiyah; special friends, the Pratt family and Cheryl; and his loving dog, Barney.

He served in World War II as a soldier in the 7th Armored Infantry Battalion. He was a brick mason for over 30 years.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2017, at Gardner Funeral Home with Pastor Leon Wood and Pastor James Bradley officiating, followed by interment in the Jacksonville Cemetery with graveside military rites by VFW Post #7854 and American Legion Post #127. The family received friends on Sunday, March 19, 2017, from 4 until 6 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home.
