Preston
Cumberland Cox, is an interesting story. His father a Cox,
mother Dica Quesenberry who had 5 children but was never married.
Generally, children of such a union would retain their mother’s surname but
Preston chose to use the Cox surname. This MAY indicate his father
maintained a connection with Preston. Story goes, Preston was 1st
cared for by a Hylton family until they moved to Indiana. Next was
with an Asa W. & Julia Ann (Slusher) Harman family that
raised him to adulthood. Whether he was “legally” adopted or not, Preston
kept the surname of Cox but maintained his relationship with his
foster parents, living near them & was even the “Informant” on their
death certificates. Their file is where you’ll find more information on
Preston & his family. [Harman_JacobS_Sophia]
