Iva Mae Stamberger, 92, of 1700 Burlington St., Mendota died Oct. 22, 2006, in her residence.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Zion Lutheran Church of Clarion with the Rev. Kevin Weeks officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota.

Mrs. Stamberger was born May 6, 1914, in Macoupin County to Eli and Carrie (Heckman) Bowman. She married Carl E. Stamberger on Aug. 18, 1940, in Church of the Brethren, Girard.

She graduated from Girard Township High School in 1932. She attended Manchester College in Indiana and graduated in 1936 from the teacher’s college that is now Illinois State University with a degree in home economics education.

She taught home economics at LaMoille, Mount Morris and Mendota high schools.

She was a member of Bureau County Home Extension, 4-H, Clarion Lutheran Church, Nine Patch Quilters and Illinois Valley Quilters Guild.

Survivors include three sons, David (Bettylee) Stamberger of Grover, Mo., Donald (Mary) Stamberger of Decatur and Wilbur (Chris) Stamberger of LaMoille; one daughter, Martha (James) Piller of Mendota; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in June 2000, one sister, one brother and a half-brother in infancy.

Memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church of Clarion, Illinois Valley Hospice or Heifer Association International.

Mary Louise Gray Bowman, 84, of Round Hill, Virginia, passed away at Heritage Hall in Leesburg, Virginia, on December 27, 2016. She was born December 7, 1932, in Round Hill, Virginia, to the late Edgar Fenton Gray and Margaret Helen Fewell Gray. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Donald L. Bowman, stepson Donald, and brother, Ernest Gray. Mary attended Loudoun County schools and worked as a babysitter, nurse’s aid, for the Marriott Corporation at Dulles Airport, and retired from FEMA.

She is survived by stepchildren, Robert Bowman (Katherine) of New Hope, Pennsylvania and Debra Brannan (Bob) of Crofton, Maryland, step grandchildren, Sara Brannan, Shanna Giordano, Todd Bowman, and Josh Bowman, and five step great grandchildren. She is also survived by four brothers, Leonard Gray of Culpeper, VA, Russell Gray, Melvin Gray, and Edward (Pete) Gray (Mary) all of Round Hill, Virginia, three sisters, Patsy Sheaffer of Ashburn, Virginia, Frances Dorsey (James), of Winchester, Virginia, and Judy Fry of Hamilton, Virginia, one aunt, Katie Poland of Charlottesville, Virginia, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mary was also fortunate to have two great friends, Audrey Payne of Paeonian Springs, Virginia and Winnie Kelly of Bluemont, Virginia.

Visitation will be held Monday, January 2, 2017 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Hall’s Funeral Home, Purcellville, Virginia. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at Hall’s Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. with interment at Ebenezer Cemetery, Bluemont, Virginia. (no photo)

BOWMAN, Rev. Luther D., 97, of Floyd, died on Sunday, October 13, 1996. Rev. Bowman was ordained as a minister in the Brethren Church in 1921 and served Laurel Branch Church until his retirement in 1969. He was well known throughout the county and district for his faithful service as a minister. Rev. Bowman was preceded in death by his wife, Carsie Reed Bowman; a son, David Luther Bowman; and a daughter, Esther Bowman Trail. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and J. Edward Slusher, Joyce and Leslie Pugh, both of Floyd, Ruby and Robert Castle, Fincastle; daughter-in-law, Sue Bowman, Vinton. Pa Pa Bowman is also survived by nine grandchildren and spouses, Ron and Freeda Trail, Atlanta, Ga., Judy and Gary Shockey, Roanoke, John and Sue Pugh, Herndon, Robert and Theresa Pugh, Fredericksburg, Bob and Sharon Castle, Houston, Texas, Donna and Steve Aspell, Brentwood, Calif., Jan and Clayton Renander, Red Oak, Iowa, Michael and Cindy Bowman, Montgomery, Pa., Debbie Secrist, Salem; two step grandchildren and spouses, Thomas and Judy Robinson, Luray, Donna and Scott Stanley, Salem. Robert Edward Castle, 81, of Fincastle, died Sunday morning, April 22, 2007 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem.

Mr. Castle was born April 20, 1926, to Willie Lee and June Castle on the farm in Willis, Va. He graduated from Willis High School in 1943 and earned a junior accounting degree from National Business College in Roanoke in August 1944. He served in the US Navy from September 1944 until June 1946. He returned to National Business College and earned a business administration degree in 1947. He went to work for Radford College in the treasurer's office and worked his way up the ranks to become college treasurer. He married Ruby Bowman on February 3, 1952 in Floyd, Va. They lived in Radford until 1957 when they moved to Botetourt County where they operated Royal Motor Court until 1973. Mr. Castle went to work for Alex Wimmer Tire Service in the 1960s and later bought in as a partner. He left the business in 1976 but returned to work for the new owner. He continued to work part-time throughout most of his later years. Mr. Castle was a 50-year active member of Ebenezer United Methodist where he served as lay leader, taught adult Sunday School class and served as chairman of the administrative board for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ruby Castle of Fincastle; three children, Robert Castle, Jr. and his wife, Sharon of Webster, Texas, Donna Castle Aspell and her husband, Steve of Brentwood, Calif., Jan Castle Renander and her husband, Clayton of Red Oak, Iowa; four grandchildren, one brother, William Castle of Salem, Va.; and one sister, Mary Sue Whitenack of Ridgefield Retirement Community in Salem, Va.; plus many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Interment will follow in Mill Creek Cemetery.

Ruby Bowman Castle, 90, of Fincastle, died Sunday morning, October 18, 2015, at the Bethel Ridge Assisted Living and Adult Care facility where she had resided since July. Prior to that, she lived in her own home in Botetourt County.

Mrs. Castle was born on April 11, 1925, to Luther D and Carsie Reed Bowman in Floyd, Va. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Floyd High School in 1942. She went to work for the Radford Army Arsenal during WWII and then worked at the Bank of Floyd. She married Robert E. Castle on February 3, 1952, in Floyd, Va. They lived in Radford until 1957 when they moved to Botetourt County where they operated Royal Motor Court until 1973. At that time, they converted the motor court into Royal Apartments, adding on to the complex in the summer of 1977. Mrs. Castle worked at the Alex Wimmer Tire Service and later Wimmer Tire Service as a bookkeeper and office manager in the sixties and seventies. Following her husband's death in 2007, Mrs. Castle continued to operate Royal Apartments.

In addition to her family, the strongest aspect of Mrs. Castle's life was her church. She was a 50-plus year active member of Ebenezer United Methodist where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and served as church treasurer for many years.

Survivors include three children: Robert Castle, Jr. and his wife, Sharon, of Webster, Texas; Donna Castle Aspell of Brentwood, Calif.; Jan Castle Renander and her husband, Clayton, of Red Oak, Iowa; four grandchildren: Sarah and Stephen Aspell of California, Karl Renander of Iowa, and Kate Wiederholt of Missouri; plus, many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Castle will be at 11 a.m., Thursday October 22, 2015, in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in Mill Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial to Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 85 Nace Rd., Troutville, Va. 24175 or your favorite charity. Carol Sue Hale Bowman, 70, of Vinton, Va., passed away Friday, February 19, 2010, at her home. She was born August 15, 1939. She was employed for many years with Norfolk Southern Railroad where both she and her husband retired from to travel. Sue was preceded in death by her father, Howard Hale; and her husband, David Bowman. Surviving are her mother, Maude Hale, of Vinton; daughter, Donna Robinson Stanley and her husband, Scott, of Salem; son, Thomas Howard Robinson and his wife, Judy, of Luray, Va.; five grandchildren, Lisa, Tommy, Michael and Katie Robinson, Kay Stanley; brother, Edward Hale and Pat, of Vinton; an aunt, several nieces, a special friend, Dorothy Scoggins; and many other dear friends.
