2010 Death: 12-29-2010.

2010 Obit: Published in Roanoke Times on December 31, 2010

On June 15, 1919, Martin and Cordelia Weddle Harman were blessed with their 11th and final child. They named their son, Melvin Fred, and all his life everyone would call him Fred. He grew up on Bunky Run near the banks of Burks Fork Creek in Willis, Va., close to where his ancestors settled in the 1780s. He worked hard from a young age, learning to plow the fields with horses by the time he was five (or so he said.) His father taught him how to build caskets and furniture and to "doctor" animals. For many years people from miles around would call on him for help with their sick cattle. Fred, like many others in his family, had a wicked sense of humor.
Fred left the family farm during the Great Depression to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps and help construct the Blue Ridge Parkway. This was good preparation for being called to active duty during World War II. He served as a military policeman at the Norfolk Naval Base. Upon his return home, he married his sweetheart, Minnie Belcher, on September 16, 1944. They were blessed with 66 years together. They lived for many years only two miles from Fred's family home place. In 1989 they moved closer to "town" (Floyd). Fred worked on his small farm growing crops and milking cows while also working for the State Highway Department, Federal Park Service, and in his retirement years, assisting his nephew, Carlin Maberry, at Maberry's Funeral Home. He was a member of the American Legion and Odd Fellows for many years.

On Wednesday, December 29, 2010, with his family by his side, Fred was called home to Jesus. Besides his parents Fred is predeceased by all his siblings, Arlie Tobler, Annie Maberry, Mary Lee Hodges, Nancy Smith, Ruth Weddle, Harvey, Otho, Burnett, Charlie, and Harry.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Hilda and Howard Dickerson, of Willis; son, Norman Harman and fiancée, Cherie Horton, of Riner; grandchildren, Jennifer Tunstall, of Willis, and Benjamin Webb, of Floyd. His great-grandchildren, Jared and Evan Richardson and Carter Tunstall, brought him much joy. He was delighted that Carter inherited his sense of humor. Fred is also survived by many nieces and nephews including his nephew and good friend Hubert Harman; his sisters-in-law, Monnie Lovins, of Christiansburg, Lula Harris, of Radford, and Pauline Bolt, of Meadows of Dan. He had wonderful caregivers, Michelle Smith, Cherie Horton, Dr. Susan Osborne, and the staff at Skyline Nursing Home. He was blessed with a loving church family at Little River Baptist Church.
Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 2, 2011, at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Allan Vass officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Willis. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 1, 2011, at the funeral home.

Fred will be greatly missed by all who knew him, but we know he will be busy making the angels laugh.

"Until we meet again Daddy, we love you."
Arrangements by Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd.

Minnie Ester Belcher Harman

Obit for Minnie: (src: Find A Grave)

Three things will last forever-Faith, Hope, and Love-and the greatest of these is love.1 Corinthians 13:13.

On October 22, 2014, Minnie Ester Belcher Harman of Floyd was reunited in heaven with her beloved husband Fred and twin sister, Monnie Lovins. Minnie & Monnie were welcomed into the family of Benjamin Harrison & Manie Conner Belcher on September 8, 1921.

The two “bashful” girls led a quiet life of hard work on the family farm at the base of Hog Mountain in Willis, Virginia. They walked several miles to attend Slate Mountain School and later joined the Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church.

Minnie loved and was devoted to her siblings. Her brothers, Edgar, Thomas, Ray, and Daniel and two other sisters, Gaye Edwards, and Infant Beulah, preceded her in death.

She was 23 years old and starting to worry she might be an old maid, when she met a gregarious, funny guy, totally opposite of her shy and reserved manner. On September 16, 1944, she married Melvin Fred Harman. They were blessed with 66 years of marriage. She spoiled Fred their entire married life and cared for him until he passed on December 29, 2010.

For many years they resided on a small farm on Burks Fork Creek in Willis. After 12 years of marriage they were blessed with a daughter and five years later a son. Minnie worked hard to provide for her family. She grew and canned fruits & vegetables, milked cows, and raised pigs and chickens. She was an excellent cook who thought biscuits and gravy were a staple for every meal. She dried her own apples for her delicious fried apple pies. Minnie made beautiful quilts for people from all over the country. In 1989 she and Fred left the farm and moved closer to town (Floyd).

Minnie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Hilda and Howard Dickerson of Willis, and her son, Norman and fiancée Cherie Horton, of Riner. Grandchildren, Jennifer Tunstall and fiancé Onix Pastrana; Benjamin & Kathie Webb. Her Great-grandchildren, Jared, Evan, and Carter, were the light of her life and gave her much pleasure in her later years. She is also survived by two loving sisters, Lula Harris of Radford and Pauline Bolt of Meadows of Dan. Minnie leaves behind many nephews and nieces including Evona Helms of Meadows of Dan. She was blessed to have a loving church family at Little River Baptist Church and wonderful caregivers, Michelle Smith, Terri Poff, Martha Turpin, Audrey Goad, and Arlene Radford.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Elmon Thompson, will follow at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Willis.

Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. Proverbs 31:28. Mama-until we meet again, we love you and will miss you.

2015 Death: 5-18-2015 Staunton City, VA.

2015 Obit: (News-Leader)

STAUNTON – Dr. William Elgin Harman, 98, of Staunton, died Monday, May 18, 2015, at Brightview at Baldwin Park. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Elizabeth Jane Hivick Harman; two daughters, Mary Lynn Harman Sivacek and Jane Harman Chase, both of Staunton; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

A son of the late Dr. Jabez M. Harman and Marcella Elgin Harman of Floyd, Virginia. He was born Jan. 31, 1917. Raised in a medical home, William often accompanied his father on horseback making house calls throughout Floyd County. From those early days, William decided to become a doctor. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnical Institute in 1938 with a degree in biology, was a member of the Corps of Cadets and was a student assistant in the infirmary.

He then pursued a Medical degree from the University of Virginia and obtained it in 1942. Before graduating, he met and married a fellow laboratory technician student, Betty Jane Hivick of Harrisonburg. “Bill” as his professors called him, was offered a job in Charlottesville, but declined, believing it was his duty to serve his country as WWII broke out. In 1943, he entered the Army as a Medical Officer and was assigned to the 429th Medical Collecting Company, which was attached to the 8th Corps of the 3rd Army. He served in the Battle of the Bulge under George C. Patton and was in Germany when the war ended.

After the war, he returned to the University of Virginia Hospital for three years, specializing in Pediatrics. During this time, he was a member of the Alpha Omega Honorary Medical Society and the Augusta Medical Society.

In 1948, he became Staunton’s first pediatrician and made many house calls during those early years. For 36 years, he served hundreds of families. He was certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and was a member of both the Medical Society of Virginia and the Augusta Medical Society.

On the 10th day of his practice, a little baby named George Thomas Sproul was brought to his office and became one of his regular patients. That boy grew up to become another Pediatrician in the Staunton community since 1977. Dr. Harman was responsible for the desegregation of the Nursery and New Mother’s Wing at Kings Daughters Hospital in the early 1950’s. Bill was a serious man, but within the halls of the hospital, he would often be seen sneaking around corners armed with a finger gun, usually ready for his colleague and friend, Dr. William Painter.

Dr. Harman retired in 1984 and spent many of those days fishing with Bill Painter, bird watching with his wife, hunting with his dogs, taking walks in the woods, and traveling throughout the Eastern United States viewing the beauty of nature. He also continued his love of medicine by listening to medical tapes and reading a variety of medical journals and books. At 97, he could be found on the computer looking up new medicines and treatments.

Dr. Harman was a man of integrity and quiet dignity. He was devoted to his family, friends and patients of his medical practice.

Family will receive friends from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2015, at Henry Funeral Home.

There will be a private burial for family at the Dayton Cemetery in Dayton, Virginia.

Anyone wishing to honor Dr. Harman can do so by giving to Camp Dragonfly, a camp for children and teens who are dealing with the death of a loved one, Augusta Health Foundation, c/o Camp Dragonfly, P.O. Box 1000, Fishersville, VA 22939.

The family extends their deepest appreciation to the staff and nurses at Brightview Baldwin Park and Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah for their kindness and support during the care of our father.

Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Those wishing may share a memory of Dr. Harman online at www.henryfuneralhome.net or in other convenient ways.
