Donald Ray Sowers, s/o Harold Lee & Eula
(Hale) Sowers. [Sowers_JohnH_Catherine]
A Floyd County man, sentenced
to 20 years in prison in July for beating and strangling his father, hanged
himself Sunday at Greensville Correctional Center.
Donald Ray Sowers, 33, was found hanging from
shoelaces tied to an air vent in his cell shortly before 10 p.m., said
Wayne Farrar, a spokesman for the Virginia Department of Corrections.
Sowers was alone in his cell and was alive when a
guard checked on him 20 to 30 minutes earlier.
An internal affairs unit at the prison is
investigating the hanging.
Earlier this year, Sowers pleaded guilty in Floyd County Circuit Court to
the second-degree murder of his father, Harold L. Sowers, 60. [Death Cert]
As part of a plea agreement, the charge was
reduced from first-degree murder.
Central State Hospital psychologist Henry O.
Gwaltney testified that Sowers was mentally competent to stand trial. But
at the time of the offense, Gwaltney said, Sowers was legally insane and
could not distinguish right from wrong.
Gwaltney said Sowers was schizophrenic but could
remain stable as long he takes his medicine. Sowers was ordered to undergo
more psychiatric treatment in prison.
At a preliminary hearing in February, Sowers'
mother, Eula Hale Sowers, said her son abused his family after he suffered
a head injury six years ago. On several occasions, she said, they had to
handcuff him and admit him to St. Albans Psychiatric Hospital.
Eula Sowers testified she was cooking dinner in
July 1990 when her husband said he was going to ask their son if he had
taken his medicine, which he often forgot to take.
She said the next sound she heard was a loud thud
as her son slammed his father against the dining room wall. When she ran
into the dining room, she said, her son had her husband pinned to the floor
and was choking him.
She said she was unable to break up the fight. She then called the
sheriff's office.
She said her son looked up at her and said,
"He's dying and you're next."
