HAZEL JAMES SUTPHIN MOORE
HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS- On September 27, 2005, Hazel James Sutphin Moore (Mrs. Ernest Clifford Moore) passed away peacefully in her sleep after 97 excellent years.

She was born in Floyd County, at Narrowdale Farm, the eighth of nine children of Eliza Ann Hylton Sutphin and James Abraham Lincoln Sutphin, on March 17, 1908.

She took advantage of every learning opportunity and graduated from high school with honors.

The poetry she learned as a child was with her 90 years later, and she could recite without error such classics as "We'll go no more a'roving by the light of the moon…" Hazel worked crossword puzzles in pen and treasured her vocabulary.

In the 1920's, she met the love of her life, and she and Ernest began nearly 70 years of married devotion. Together they hiked, hunted, learned to bird as near-professionals, enjoyed their extended families, and ventured on some exciting treks.

Purchasing a new Nash Rambler in the early '50's, they headed to the West Coast, telling their families that they'd not be getting mail, so any news, bad or good, would have to wait until they returned, and they ventured across country for a season's adventure.

She and Ernest were dedicated members of the First Christian Church in Roanoke.

She voted in every election from the time she was 21, and her first Presidential vote (for Herbert Hoover) to her last (for George W. Bush) were all cast for GOP candidates.
Hazel was a major force in Republican organizations in Virginia until a tragic auto accident affected her vision and her health. While she could no longer participate as before, she supported the party throughout her life in many ways.

Her life spanned the century, from farm to city, and her passing is the passing of an era.

Hazel's book, "The Hylton Genealogy: From Castle to Cottage" was begun in 1946 and completed in 1978 and has enjoyed two private printings. Genealogy was one of her great passions, and she enjoyed the interest of "family" all over the county as well as that of other genealogists around the world. Her love for her extended family led to her creation of a chain letter with all her sisters and brothers, which continues today with great-grandchildren as writers, keeping the family linked together.

Hazel was a talented writer, enjoying the written word and either typing on her old Underwood or writing in the elegant hand she had learned in childhood, throughout her life.

After Ernest's death, Hazel relocated to Texas, to live in Huntsville near her family.

Governor George Bush appointed her a "Yellow Rose of Texas" with a lovely plaque.

Those who bear witness to that life well lived are her nephew, David Weeks, who was her dear son throughout her life, his wife Kelly Weeks, and her grand-nephews, ZZ and Dylan, her niece, Ann N. James and her husband, Donald Holmquest, their daughter and her family, her many other nieces and nephews, friends and loved ones across the country.

Special thanks from all the family are extended to Robert Fernandez, Pat Oliphant, the Reverends Bruce A. Hay and Mark Pickett, the staffs of Huntsville Health Care Center, Odyssey Healthcare and the Carriage Inn for their many kindnesses and care for Hazel.

A celebration of her life was held at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home 1700 Normal Park, Huntsville, Texas, at 1 p.m. Monday, October 3, 2005, under the direction of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home, and her ashes will be interred in Virginia, next to her beloved Ernest, in July, 2006.

Avis, 88, of Battle Creek, died Monday at Good Samaritan Hospice Residence. She was the daughter of Galen and Susan (Hamborski) Sutphin.

Avis served as a WAVE in the U. S. Navy during World War II and met her husband, John L. Thomas while stationed in Washington, D. C. She worked as a secretary for Parke-Davis Drug Company, the State of Illinois and Kellogg's until retiring in 1983.

Avis is survived by her daughter, Michelle (Marv Miller) Riste of Battle Creek; son, John Thomas of Battle Creek; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; sister, Mercedes (Robert) Sponsler of Springfield, Illinois and brother, Robert (Phyllis) Sutphin of Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas in 1996; her parents and brothers Bernard Sutphin and Donald Sutphin.

Funeral services took place Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the funeral home with Deacon Jim Mellen, St. Philip Catholic Church, officiating.

Memorial donations may go to Good Samaritan Hospice Care, Battle Creek, MI.

Donald A. Sutphin, 77, of Granite City, died at 9:05 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006, at his residence.

He was born May 30, 1929, in Detroit. Mr. Sutphin was retired from the Granite City School District as a junior high school industrial arts teacher and coach; was employed in his youth in Virden in the coal mines; and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a helicopter mechanic and playing on the troop's baseball team.

He married the former Rita Joan Jackson on Aug. 22, 1953, in Pocahontas, Ark. She survives after 53 years of marriage.

Other survivors include two daughters, Teri (Darrell) Sy of Fairview Heights and Denise (Gary) Clouser of Glen Carbon; three sons, Gregory (Barbara) Sutphin of Godfrey, Kevin (Karen) Sutphin of Granite City and Brett (Allison) Sutphin of DeSoto, Mo.; two sisters, Avis Thomas of Battle Creek, Mich. and Mercedes (Robert) Sponsler of Springfield; two brothers, Bernard (Rose) Sutphin of Clinton Township, Mich., and Robert (Phyllis) Sutphin of Ashland; and eight grandchildren, Andrea Sy, Lori Howard, Ryan Sy, Matthew Sutphin, Cory Clouser, Katie Sutphin, Cameron Clouser and Skyler Sutphin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Galen and Susan (Hamborsky) Sutphin; and one brother-in-law, John Thomas.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 17, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18, at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Doug Nicely officiating.

Burial with military graveside rites will be at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 18, in the Virden Cemetery.

Mr Wayne M Sutphin, 73, of Springfield died at 4:55 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Hospital Hospice.

He was born Oct. 3, 1916, in Virden, the son of Henry and Ada Lou Ella Harris Sutphin. Prior to retiring in 1981, Mr. Sutphin was a television technician for Sears and Roebuck.

Preceding him in death were five brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Sutphin was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, where he served as a greeter and in other various activities. He was an avid bowler and fisherman. He served in the Air Corps during World War II. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn; a daughter, Mrs. David (Penny) Carstens of Portland, Ore.; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Neil Ristow and Dr. Lewis Niemoeller officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

COUPLE WED IN INFORMAL CEREMONY
Married Oct. 25 in an informal ceremony in rural Scottville were Mrs. Louise Sutphin Hays of Virden and Walter (Rocky) DeWerff, Virden tavern operator who farms near Scottville.

Rev. Joseph Peters of Virden, retired Nazarene minister, performed the single ring ceremony on a 25-foot dam recently completed for use as a commercial fishing site. The dam is located near the couple's future home, "Rocky Lou's Ponda Rose."

Attendants for the couple were the bride's brother, Marvin Sutphin of Springfield, and Mrs. Eva Voyles of Virden.

After the wedding service, a barbecue was held for the wedding party.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Berry Funeral Home, Virden, with burial in Virden Cemetery.

Surviving are a stepson, Frank J. of Miami, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Betty Devor of Belvidere; six step grandchildren; and a brother, Marvin L. Sutphin of Springfield.
