building of Rockingham Court United Methodist Church in Southeast Roanoke
County. She was a lifetime member of United Methodist Women and a charter member
of Rockingham Court United Methodist Church. Surviving are her children,
Robert W. and Marie W. Martin, Roanoke; Massie and Christine W. Martin,
Roanoke; Christian H. and Barbara M. Wickham, Cumberland, Va.; James W. and

church. Rev. R.C. King and Rev. C.E. Wade of graham conducted the service
following which interment was made in the Donnell cemetery. Mrs.
Vest, 89, died Thursday, Nov. 24 as the result of burns. To

Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in
death by his wife, Garthie Aldridge Conner; his father and mother, Alfred
Letcher and Evie Lawrence Conner; and a brother, Maurice Conner. He was a
life-time resident and farmer of the Terry's Fork / Stonewall Road Community.
He was a sixty year member of Floyd Lodge No. 202 Independent Order of Odd
Fellows, a member of Jacksonville Encampment No. 36, and Canton Roanoke No.
11. He retired from VDOT after eleven years of service in 1986. His survivors
include two daughters, Anita Conner of Richmond and Myra Conner of St.
Augustine, Fla.; and a sister, Mazie Wimmer of Christiansburg. The family
will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 14,
2004 at the Maberry Funeral Home. Funeral service will be Saturday, May 15,
2004 at 3 p.m. at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Elbert Lee
Naff officiating. Interment wll follow at the Wilson Cemetery with graveside

are a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Terrence O'Hara, Washington
Township, N.J.; three grandsons, Ryan, Brandon, and Justin O'Hara; a brother,
Bobby Ray Conner, Roanoke. Funeral
services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 11 a.m. Thursday,

M. (Bill) Conner, 87, of Salem, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2012. He was
born on July 11, 1924, in Floyd County, to Daniel and Louella Conner. He
proudly served his country in the Army during World War II, participating in
the Second Wave at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He felt great pride
in taking part in the liberation of the concentration camps. Upon return from
World War II, he began his lifelong career as an electrician, working for
Delta Electric Company for 13 years, S&W Cafeterias, and Macke Vending
Company from which he retired after 25 years of service. Along with his many
accomplishments, he served in the Civil Air Patrol for more than 50 years. He
was a Free Mason of the Taylor Lodge in Salem for over 50 years. He was also,
a member of the American Legion Post #3. He is survived
by his wife of 45 years, Alta Wade Conner; brother, G. Wade Conner and wife,
Eunice, of Vinton; daughter, Dolores Leed and husband, Stephen, of Yorktown;
one grandson; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by the Wade
family and the best neighbors in the world. Special
thanks to the VAMC, Salem and the doctors, nurses and other staff who have
provided excellent care over the last several years. Also, to the Good
Samaritan Hospice staff for their care and support over the last three months.
Your compassion and care are greatly appreciated. Funeral
Service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2012, at Lotz
Salem Chapel with Pastor Marvin Wade officiating. Interment to follow at 2:30
p.m. at Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Dublin. The family will receive
friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2012, at Lotz Funeral Home
Salem. In

(Conner) Davis, Virginia Conner, Iva (Conner) Morgan, and Dexter (Conner)
Sowers; brother, Woodrow Conner (and wife, Reba); a special niece, Frances
Gardner (and husband, Olen); numerous other nieces and nephews. Funeral
services were held at the Salem Church (Head of the River) with Reverend Olen
Gardner and Elder Lane Carter officiating. Interment followed in the church

Dare Conner, aged 85, of Vinton, Virginia, formerly of Copper Hill, Virginia,
passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2004, at the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Miss.
Conner was survived by five sisters, Velva (Conner) Davis, Iva (Conner)
Morgan, Dexter Marie (Conner) Sowers, Bonnie Conner, and Georgianna (Conner)
Link; one brother, Arthur Conner; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation
was on Thursday, January 22nd, at the Maberry Funeral Home of Floyd,
Virginia. Funeral service were the next day at Salem Church (Head of the
River, also known as Salem Primitive Baptist Church) with Elder W.T. Conner

2011. Dexter was born in Copper Hill, Va. on May 30, 1922 to Jasper and
Elizabeth Conner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold F. Sowers
in 1998; family members, Pauline Rakes, Goldie Bartlett, Lee and Margaret Conner,
Sam and Elzora Conner, Hazel and Coy Ferris, Iva and Bob Morgan, Mabel and
Edmund Poff, Virginia Conner, Woodrow and Rheba Conner, Velva and Henry
Davis, and Bonnie Conner. Dexter is survived by three sons and
daughters-in-law, Brenn and Alene Sowers, Bruce and Wanda Sowers, Joel Sowers
and fiancé, Geanna and Gabriel Mullins; one daughter, Carmen Manning; one
sister and brother-in-law, Georgianna and Leon Link; one brother-in-law and
spouse, Arthur and Ilene Conner; eight grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren;
and numerous nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Medi Home Health and
caregivers, Angie Manning and Phyllis Donathan. Funeral services will be held
at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at Head of the River Church with the
Reverend Olen Gardner officiating. Interment will follow at Restvale
Cemetery. Friends may call Monday, January 17, 2011 where family will receive

31, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband, Brinton E. Conner, her
brothers, Billy Ferris and Vaughn Ferris, her sisters, Ethel Wilson, Ilene
Altice, Josephine Smith and Rebecca Keenan. Mrs. Conner was a charter member
of Colonial Avenue Baptist Church, where she was one of the original
organizers for the church semiannual yard sale, which supported church
outreach missions. She was affectionately known to many as the "Garage
Sale Goddess". She and her husband owned and operated a general
merchandise store on Colonial Avenue and also, Wakefield Inn. She is survived
by her daughter and son-in-law, Shelby Jean and Fred Mowles, Roanoke, VA., a
son and daughter-in-law, Robert (Bob) & Louise Conner, Vinton, VA., her grandchildren,
David L. Mowles and wife, Linda, Star City, Ark. Donald R. Mowles and wife,
Cathy, Roanoke, VA., Douglas W. Mowles and wife, Karen, Salem, VA., Dannette

Sunday, July 16, 2000, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. She was retired from Health
Services at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her
husband, William Edward Yates, granddaughter, Lisa Faye Wimmer, and a
son-in-law, Jerry Wimmer. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Denise
Ouzts, Vero Beach, Fla., Linda Faye and William Walker, Altamonte Springs,
Fla., Trena and Jerry Minnix, Check; grandchildren, Gail Ouzts, Cathy Ouzts
Plowden, and Alison Ann Wimmer; great-grandchildren, John Darien Manning, and
Cynthia Plowden; step grandchildren, Rebecca Sweat, and Keith Walker; step
great-grandchildren, Billy Sweat, Johnny Sweat, and Katie Walker; and
sisters-in-law, Jean Link, Helen Link, Vivian Conner, and Dorothy Yates.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Salem Church (Head of The River)
with Elder W. T. Conner and Mr. Buddy Frei officiating. Burial will be in
Salem Cemetery (Head of The River). The family will receive friends from 7 to

Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her first husband of seven years
and the father of her children, Garwood S. Conner; her second husband of 49
years, Ernest N. Conner; son, Clifton W. Conner; brothers, Edmund Poff and
wife, Mabel, and Murrie Poff; and brothers-in-law, Namon Vest, Shike King,
and Diamond Shortt. She is survived by her son, Charles G. Conner and wife,
Wilma, of Troutville; daughter, Margaret C. Jones and husband, Ronald, of
Roanoke; grandson, Patrick C. Conner; granddaughters, Rhonda J. Graham and
husband, Brad, Janet I. Conner, Tina J. Worley and husband, Patrick, and
Teresa Jones; great-grandchildren, Amanda, Blake and Jacob Graham, Megan
Worley, and Cathryn Conner. She also has one great-great-grandson, Eric
Holden Mabe. Also surviving are her sisters and brothers, Beulah Vest, Colean
King, Jaqueline Blackwell and husband, Harvey, Sylvia Shortt, Louise and
Dorsey Thompson, Wilson and Audrey Poff, and Shirley and Emma Poff,
