Alfred L. Conner, 89, passed away Aug. 7, 2005, in Ocoee, Fla., near Orlando. Born in Thaxton in 1915, he graduated from Rustburg High and was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. One of the first selected for NASA operations at Cape Canaveral, Fla., he retired from there in the early 1970’s. He is survived by his sister, Kathleen Probst of Lynchburg; wife Ann, son Vernon and two grandchildren, all of Orlando, Fla. Service and interment will be in held in Florida.

WICKHAM, MABEL OCIE CONNER COWAN, 86, of Riner, died Monday, August 12, 2002, at New River Valley Medical Center. Mabel devoted her career to education and our youth, teaching school in Montgomery County for thirty-eight years. The daughter of the late Everette and Annie Conner, she was the widow of William O. Wickham and was also preceded in death by a brother, Alton Conner and a sister, Bonnie Johnson. She is survived by a sister, Sharon Conner Yeatts and husband, Eddie, Dublin, Va.; nieces and nephews, Betty Johnson Sowers and husband, Louis, Riner, Angela Conner, Burlington, Vermont, Gary Johnson and wife, Sandra, Christiansburg, Michael Conner and wife, Lisa, Danville, Vermont, Chadd W. Yeatts, Warrington, Va.; great-nieces and nephews, Susan Light and husband, Kevin, L.G. Sowers, Jr., Seth Johnson, Candace Johnson, Dallis Conner; stepsons, Robert Wickham and wife, Mary Dell, Sykesville, Md., William Wickham and wife, Alyce, Burnsville, N.C.; five step grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. Friends may call after 12 noon Wednesday with the family receiving friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. CONNER, Virgie Gladys, 86, of Copper Hill, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 1999 in Richfield Nursing Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Willard Conner. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jackson Lee and Louise Conner, Copper Hill, Howard Wesley and Evelyn Conner, Roanoke; one daughter and son-in-law, Juanita C. and William Pugh, both of Roanoke; grandchildren and spouses, Chris Conner, Greg and Amanda Conner, Michael and Debbie Conner, Diane and Tommy Cox, Debra and Jon Layman, Pamela Pugh; three great-grandchildren, Jenny Conner, Amanda Cox, Robin and Ronny Underwood; two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Salem Primitive Baptist Church (Head of the River) with Elder Hale Terry officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Juanita Conner Pugh, 82, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday afternoon, August 19, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. Her parents Willard J. and Virgie Conner preceded her in death.

Mrs. Pugh was employed for 18 years with McKesson Drug Corp. before working for Roanoke Iron and Bridge Works for 10 years before retiring and joining her husband in the family business selling cars at the Kar Korral. She loved her family dearly and spending time with them, and in her free time she enjoyed sewing, making clothes for her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving and devoted husband of 62 years, William M. Pugh; two daughters, Debra Layman and husband, Jon, of Roanoke, Pamela Hatter and husband, Matthew from Botetourt; a granddaughter, Kaitlyn Hatter; brothers, Howard Wesley Conner and wife, Evelyn, of Roanoke County, Jackson L. Conner and wife, Louise, of Copper Hill; sisters-in-law, Mary Board, of Roanoke, and Kathryn Naff, of Ohio. Along with a host of other family and friends.

In Mrs. Pugh's memory, memorials may be made to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America.

A funeral service celebrating Mrs. Pugh's life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 22, 2015 in Simpson Funeral Home with the Rev. Fred Austin officiating. Interment will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday August 21, 2015 at Simpson Funeral Home.
