His name was Charles Richard Peters, but he was called Richard. Richard enlisted 21 June 1861 as a Corporal in Co. C, 57th VA Infantry; was wounded. He re-enlisted in the 37th VA. Cav., Company G, as a First Sargeant and was wounded in the thigh near the knee joint in a battle at Berryville, Virginia on September 3, 1864.

EVERETTE MOYER PETERS, 93, of Roanoke, passed away on Sunday, May 2, 1999. He was the son of the late Charles W. and Eliza Allen Peters and was born on June 4, 1905 in Floyd County, Virginia. Everette retired from Shenandoah Life Insurance Company after approximately 20 years of service as night watchman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Selma Jones Peters. 

Surviving are a brother and four sisters-in-law. Leeson and Mary Peters, Chloe J. Peters, Dolores S. Peters all of Floyd and Virginia Peters of Roanoke. Several nieces and nephews also survive. 

Funeral services will be conducted at 11a.m. on Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at Clearbrook Baptist Church with Pastor Chester Lykins and Pastor Michael Nelms officiating.

BELFORD EURIAH PETERS, 85, of Floyd, passed away Monday, January 10, 1994, in Skyline Manor Nursing Home. He was a World War II Pearl Harbor Volunteer, serving as Chief Petty Officer. He also served as Medical Officer in the South Pacific on the U.S.S. Sandalwood, a submarine net-tender. He was retired from the Veterans Hospital, Salem, where he had been Chief Laboratory Technician for 25 years following his Navy discharge. 

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Lee Peters, R.N.; his parents, Charles and Emma Peters; a brother, Tracy N. Peters; a sister, Mucie Lee Martin. Surviving are his wife, Dolores S. Peters, Floyd; one son and daughter-in-law, Randolph and Mabel Caldwell Peters, Ridgeway; two grandchildren, Lewis Peters, Ridgeway, Diane Peters, London, England; two sons and their families from a former marriage, all of Alabama; one brother and sister-in-law, B. Leeson and Mary King Peters, Floyd; one half-brother, Everette Peters, Roanoke; several nieces and nephews also survive. 

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 13, 1994, 11a.m., at Gardner Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. George Bowers officiating. Interment will be private at the Peters Family Cemetery. BENFORD LEESON PETERS, 87, of Floyd, Virginia went to be with his Lord on Monday, October 25, 2004. He was born on August 21, 1917 in Floyd County, Virginia to the late Charles Willis and Emma Jones Peters. Mr. Peters was a graduate of Harris-Cannaday School, and a veteran of World War II. He was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Floyd where he served as an elder. He was also a retired electrician and plumber. 

He was predeceased by his brothers and sister, Leonard James Peters, Leamon Peters, Everette Moyer Peters, Belford Euriah Peters, Tracy Nevin Peters, Sr., and Mucie Peters Martin.

Mr. Peters is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary King Peters, Floyd, Virginia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen P. and John W. Hale, Roanoke, Virginia, and Leesa P. and Philip G. Meador, Georgetown, South Carolina, grandchildren, Charles Philip Meador, Edward Wallace Meador, and Sarah Payne Meador, Georgetown, South Carolina, Jason Wayne Hale and fiancee, Michele Dearing, Salem, Virginia, Judson Wayne Hale and wife, Crystal A. Hale, Callaway, Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Williams Peters and Dolores Sylvia Peters; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. 

Funeral services will be conducted at 11a.m. Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at the Presbyterian Church of Floyd with the Reverend David Taylor and Pastor Olander English officiating. Interment will follow in the Peters Family Cemetery. Ocie Peters Rakes, 96, of Floyd, passed away Monday April 30, 2007.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Durward Rakes. Mrs. Rakes was a member of the Floyd United Methodist Church, Past Noble Grand in Rebekah Lodge, Secretary of Floyd County Retired Teachers, member of Floyd Womans Club, and an avid bridge player. She enjoyed the bridge games with her many friends.

She taught school in a one-room school (Rifton) at the age of 18. During the years she taught at County Line and Harmon one-room schools as well as her home school of Pizarro. She also taught in Vancouver, Wash. Public Schools during World War II, and retired in 1976 from Floyd Elementary School.

Mrs. Rakes and her husband owned and operated U-Toll-Em Inn and Motel for a number of years.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Kaye and Mary Ann Rakes, Williamsburg, Va., Tom and Glenda Rakes, Martin, Tenn.; granddaughter, Sabrina Fahey and husband Jessen, Morrison, Colo.; step granddaughter, Karee Cox, Memphis, Tenn.; step grandson, Patrick Cox, Memphis, Tenn.; sister, Peggy Harris, Floyd; sisters-in-law, Jean Robbins, Myra Peters, Aretta Peters, all of Floyd; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at Floyd United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Gregory officiating. Interment will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Myra Ingram Peters, 90, of Floyd, passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2012, after a long battle with dementia. She was predeceased by her husband, J. Ford Peters and a son, Danny Dale Peters. She was an active member of Floyd Baptist Church and Pizarro Extension Club. She also worked as a clerk at a local grocery store until the young age of 78. She is survived by her son, Wendell Peters and his wife, Marie, of Floyd; also surviving are two grandsons and spouses, Gary and Carrie Peters, of Maple Hill, N.C., and Brian and Susan Peters, of Greensboro, N.C.; one granddaughter, Anne Peters, of Riner. Other survivors include two great-grandchildren, Andrew Peters, of Maple Hill, N.C., and Kristen Peters, of Greensboro, N.C. 

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Floyd Baptist Church, with the Reverend Joe Womack officiating. Interment will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery. Friends may call after noon on Tuesday June 5, 2012, at Gardner Funeral Home, where the family will be from 6 until 8 p.m. 
The family expresses special thanks to the nursing staff on C wing at Skyline Manor Nursing and Rehab for all of the love and care shown to our loved one. Arrangements are being handled by Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd.

PAGE, Alice Mary Peters, 79, went to be with the Lord Friday, July 12, 2002, after a brief illness.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, James; by her four daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Jim Feek of Seattle, Wash., Leigh and Charlie McKay of Roanoke, Hilda and Ed Eck of Richmond, Va., and Dixi and Marty Harsh of LaVale, Md.; by her four sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Lourdes of Roanoke, David and Joy of Swarthmore, Pa., Terry and Ann of Highland, Md., and Larry and Donna of Roanoke; by twenty-three grandchildren; and by four great-grandchildren.

Alice graduated from Roanoke Memorial School of Nursing in 1944 and served at Pearl Harbor Army Hospital in Honolulu until the end of World War II. She worked as a registered nurse at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and a medical transcriptionist at Boones Mill Medical Center until her retirement last year. Beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, RN, and friend, she leaves a legacy of unconditional love to all who knew her.

In celebration of her homecoming, a service will be held in the chapel at Maberry Funeral Home in Floyd, Va. on Saturday, July 13 t h at 2 p.m., followed by a brief graveside ceremony at Salem Primitive / Head-of-the-River Church in Copper Hill, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Guatemala Mission Fund at Central Baptist Church, 5656 Starkey Road, SW, Roanoke, Va. 24014.

Frank Reeves Peters, 91, of Floyd, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2007. He was born in Franklin County on January 29, 1915 to Samuel Luther and Mary Kelly Peters.

Mr. Peters was preceded in death by his wife, Essie Epperly Peters; one brother, Coy Peters; and three sisters, Nora Marshall, Gracie Gilbreth, and Gladys Hardy.

He was a member of Harvestwood Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include one son, Ervin (Sonny) Peters of Lynchburg; two daughters and one son-in-law, Carol P. and Harold E. Vest of Copper Hill, and Jeanne P. Dalton of Collinsville; three sisters, Tempest Reed of Christiansburg, Junne Virts of Lovettsville, Va., and Lucy Smith of Middletown, Md.; four grandchildren, Donna (Danny) Yeatts, Michael Conner, Gail (Mike) Minnix, and Sue (Jon) Waldron; three great grandchildren, John (Ashlee) Weeks, Devyn Conner, and Gary Yeatts; one great-great grandchild, Peyton Weeks; several nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Myra Peters, Floyd.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at the Harvestwood Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Riley Ware officiating. Interment will follow in Harvestwood Cemetery. Friends may call at Gardner Funeral Home on Tuesday after 6 p.m. where the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Flowers will be appreciated, or memorial contributions may be made to the Harvestwood Covenant Presbyterian Church. Middletown woman died Monday after a vehicle rolled onto her in the 8300 block of Hollow Road in Middletown, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. The victim, Lucy Peters Smith, 78, was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff's office said. Deputies received a call about a person underneath a vehicle at about 2:19 p.m. An investigation determined that Smith was outside of her vehicle when it rolled backward and trapped her underneath. No foul play is suspected, the sheriff's office said.

Ferrum - Mrs. Mae Peters Ingram, wife of Spot Ingram, died February 28, of paralysis and pneumonia. She had been sick for a few weeks and developed pneumonia only a few days before her death. Five daughters and two sons and her husband survive. Funeral services were held at the home, March 2, and burial was in the family cemetery near the Rep Ingram place that afternoon.
