HOBACK, Clifford Victor, 85, of Floyd, died Wednesday, April 2, 1997 in a Salem nursing home. He was preceded in death by wives, Virginia Hodges and Gretchen Conner, two brothers, Edgar and Carl Hoback, one sister, Ether Ridinger, a son-in-law, Shirley A. Peters and a grandson, Terry Amos Peters. Surviving are two daughters and son-in-law, Wanda and George Bowles, Roanoke, Maxine Peters, Check; son and daughter-in-law, Norman (Buck) and Lena Hoback, Hollins; 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral Friday, April 4, 1997, 11 a.m. at Wood Funeral Home, with Elder W. T. Conner officiating. Interment in the Stonewall Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Wood Funeral Home.

John Franklin Hoback, the son of Marion and Christine Hoback was born on September 6, 1881 in Stonewall, Virginia, and passed away November 4, 1953 at the home of his son, Newell Hoback and family near Palmer, Nebraska. He was one of four children and was preceded in death by two brothers.

He was united in marriage to Carrie Mitchell on May 11, 1904. To this union were born seven children, three girls and four boys. Alta Evelyn passed away in infancy.

In the spring of 1909, the family moved from Virginia to Nebraska. Except for a few years’ residence in Missouri, Nebraska has been his home. He was preceded in death by his wife in March of 1942.

He leaves to survive his passing: four sons: Burt Hoback of Bruno, Nebraska, Newell Hoback of Palmer, Ed and Oren Hoback of Central City, two daughters, Clarice Lamberson of Palmer and Lorraine Dyer of Castro Valley, California, one brother, Jake Hoback of Floyd, Virginia; twenty grandchildren a number of nieces and nephews and many friends.

Those attending the funeral from a distance were Mrs. Lorraine Dyer and two daughters of Castro Valley, California, Pvt. Jim Lamberson of Fort Bliss, Texas, and Mr. and Mrs. Burt Hoback and family from Bruno, Nebraska.

After a short, serious illness, Mrs. Carrie E. Hoback died early last Saturday morning at her home south of Palmer. (Funeral details followed)

Carrie Eulalia Mitchell was born June 7, 1882 at Floyd, Virginia, and passed from this life at her home near Palmer, Nebraska, March 7, 1942 at the age of 59 years, 9 months.

May 11, 1904 she was united in marriage to John Franklin Hoback. To this union were born seven children, three girls and four boys. Alta Evelyn passed away in infancy.

In the spring of 1909, they moved from Virginia to Callaway, Nebr. Except for a brief residence in Missouri they have lived in Nebraska until the present. Since 1927 their home has been near Palmer.

She became a member of the Methodist Church when she was a girl. After coming to Palmer, she placed her membership with the Christian Church here.

She leaves to mourn her passing, four sons; James Burt, Newell Kenneth, John Oren, all of Palmer, and Edward Mitchell of Central City; two daughters, Clarice Elizabeth Lamberson of Palmer and Carrie Lorraine of Washington, D. C.; her husband, three brothers and two sisters, Jim Mitchell of Washington, D. C., Tom Mitchell of Roanoke, Virginia; John Mitchell of Floyd, Virginia; Mrs. Roenie Spangler of Salem, Virginia and Mrs. Cora Graham of Callaway, Nebr. Seven grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Also, many friends.

Although she was unable to attend church regularly she remained faithful to her belief.

She was a loving and devoted mother. Her only thought was for the welfare of her family. All during her ill health she never complained.

After a short, serious illness, Mrs. Carrie E. Hoback died early last Saturday morning at her home south of Palmer. (Funeral details followed)
