James Irving Yates, of Christiansburg, Va., passed away on Wednesday, October 22, 2008. He was a native of Floyd County, and was born the son of the late Sharon and Hettie Yates. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Bandy and Ruth Howlett. Mr. Yates was a graduate of Bridgewater College, and taught business administration for 31 years. He worked in 4-H leadership for 50 years. His passion in life was weaving blankets and rugs which he shared with many people. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginia Dobbins Yates; one son, Jamey I. Yates II; niece and spouse, Margaret and Lawrence Lester; nephews and spouse, Robert Howlett, and Earl and Mamie Vest; caregivers who were blessed by him, Robin Miller, Mandy Barnes, Faye Kirtner, and Cindy Miller; and his extended family, Virginia and Oakey Bowman. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. on Friday, October 24, 2008, at Stonewall Cemetery with the Reverend J.C. Holden and the Reverend Elbert Lee Naff officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family would like to thank Good Samaritan Hospice for all of their assistance. Arrangements are being handled by Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd, Va.

Virginia Dobbins Yates, 90, of Christiansburg, Va., and formerly of Check, Va., passed away on Friday, October 1, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Irving Yates; and her parents, James Cabell Dobbins and Mary Katherine Lawrence Dobbins. Surviving are her sons, Jamey Yates, Check, Va., Charlie Cox, Weserville , Ohio; one sister, Helen Dobbins, Blacksburg, Va.; one sister-in-law, Lucille Dobbins, Christiansburg, Va.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at Stonewall Cemetery with the Reverend Elbert Lee Naff officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. William (Bill) Cameron Yates, 72, of Vinton passed away Friday, March 4, 2005.

Born March 18, 1932 in Floyd County, Va. He was a long standing member of East Gate Church of the Nazarene and was a retired antique dealer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lila and Abner Yates; brothers, Dock Yates and Roffe Yates.

He is survived by his wife, Frances R. Yates of Vinton; sister, Nancy Nelson of Pensacola, Fla.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Garland and Virginia Yates of Roanoke, Leo and Betty Yates of Fredericksburg, Lester and Blanche Yates of Roanoke and Jack and Evelyn Yates of Fredericksburg; stepson and wife, James and Carol Oliver Houston, Texas; granddaughters, Sarah and Elizabeth Oliver; brother-in-law and wife Brice and Betty Ridgway of Franklin County; 20 nieces and nephews and a number of great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, March 7, 2005 at the East Gate Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. George Stevenson and Pastor Al Frank officiating. Burial to follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Lotz Funeral Home, Vinton Chapel.

Mr. Coy Lee Yeatts, 84, of Meadows of Dan, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2008, at his home. He was born in Patrick County on September 28, 1923, to the late Coy Oliver and Mary Lee Agee Yeatts. In addition to his parents, Mr. Yeatts was preceded in death by four sisters, Lorraine Sheets, Arlene Banks, and two infant sisters; and two brothers, James Byron Yeatts and Charles Henry Yeatts. He was a member of Reed Island Springs Baptist Church where he was a deacon and had served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He operated the Mayberry Trading Post for several years and was a member of the Meadows of Dan Ruritan Club. Mr. Yeatts is survived by his wife, Dale Wood Yeatts, of the home; one brother, Frederick Yeatts, of Bedford, Mass.; four sisters, Virginia Dare Cohen. of Topeka, Kan., Edna Ann Copenhaver, of Chuquiak, Alaska, Geraldine Scardo, of Clintwood, Va., and Sandra Dean, of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother-in-law, Dan C. Sheets, of Pueblo, Colo.; and one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Yeatts, of New Kent, Va. Funeral services for Mr. Yeatts will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Reed Island Springs Baptist Church with Pastor Lonnie Hylton and the Rev. Clarence Marshall officiating. Burial will follow in the Meadows of Dan Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, July 11, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church. Moody Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

STANLEY, Vera Yeatts, 93, of Meadows of Dan, died Tuesday, August 22, 2000, at R. J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart. She was born in Patrick County on November 10, 1906, to the late John Henry and Edna Reynolds Yeatts. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Stanley was preceded in death by her husband, Cornelius Columbus Stanley; a son, Richard Y. Stanley; a brother, Coy Yeatts; four sisters, Della Yeatts Archer, Eunice Y. McAlexander, Essie Y. Hopkins, and Clarice Yeatts. Mrs. Stanley was a member of Meadows of Dan Baptist Church. Mrs. Stanley is survived by a daughter-in-law, who was her caregiver, Nancy U. Stanley of Abingdon; a brother, John Hassell Yeatts of Montgomery, Alabama; two sisters, Lora Yeatts King of Madison, Wisconsin, and Eileen Yeatts Horton of Dublin; and a host of nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Stanley will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarence Marshall officiating. The family will gather at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will follow in the Yeatts Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church. Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is in charge of the arrangements.

McALEXANDER, Elkanah Adison, 86, of Hillsville, formerly of Meadows of Dan, died Saturday morning in Baptist Hospital. For the past four years, he was a resident of Wheatland Retirement Center in Hillsville. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the the Naval Bombardment during the invasion of Okinawa and Iwojima. He was a charter member of the Meadows of Dan Ruritan Club, with 44 years of service. He was a past master and member of Mt. H ome Masonic Lodge #263, a member of Meadows of Dan VFW Post #8497, and a member and former deacon of Meadows of Dan Baptist Church. He retired with 42 years of service from the Virginia Department of Transportation as equipment maintenance supervisor. 

He was born in Patrick County on March 17, 1910, to the late John M. and Cora Williams McAlexander. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Yates McAlexander; a daughter, Jeanie Turman; a sister, Frela McAlexander, and a brother, Dennis McAlexander. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, J. Aaron and Glenda McAlexander of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Ms. Edna McAlexander of Naples, Fla.; two brothers, Early McAlexander of Meadows of Dan and Joel McAlexander of Hillsville; two sisters, Fannie Thomas of Salem and Lucy Reynolds of Mt. Airy, N.C.; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. 

Funeral services for Mr. McAlexander will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Military rites will be given by Patrick County Memorial Honor Guard and Masonic rites by the Mt. Home Lodge #263. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

Ethel Radford Yeatts passed away Monday, February 3, 1992, in a Salem hospital. She is survived by one son, Shirley Yeatts, Copper Hill; three daughters, Phyllis Collins of Salem; Christine Cornette and Geraldine Dooley, both of Roanoke; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Chloe Robertson of Pearisburg; Clarice Turner and Arlene Turner, both of Floyd. Funeral service will be Thursday 2:00 p.m. at the Copper Hill Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Douglas Jones and the Rev. Frank Wimmer officiating with interment in the Radford Cemetery, Floyd. The family will receive friends Wednesday 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, Floyd.

YEATTS, Shirley Robert, of Bent Mountain, passed away Thursday, May 9, 1996 in a local hospital. Mr. Yeatts was retired. He was predeceased by his parents, Virgil and Ethel Yeatts, and sister, Geraldine Dooley. Surviving are his wife, Bette Yeatts; daughter, Tiffany Yeatts, Bent Mountain; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Bill and Christine Cornette, Roanoke, Phyllis and Archie Collins, Salem; three nephews; two nieces; including a special nephew, Paul Yeatts and wife, Debbie of Salem; three aunts, Chloe Robertson, Salem, Arlene Turner, Floyd, Claris and Sparrel Turner, Floyd. Graveside services will be held at Copper Hill Church of the Brethren Cemetery, 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Greg Mills officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Bent Mountain Rescue Squad, Bent Mountain, Va. 24059 . Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Oakey's South Chapel, 4257 Brambleton Avenue
