AKERS, Aletha
Ola Duncan, 89, of Christiansburg, passed away Saturday, December 31, 1994
in Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born April 11, 1905 in Floyd
County, the eldest child of the late Enoch Jefferson and Leona Allen Duncan
of Alum Ridge. She was an alumni of Radford State Normal Teachers College
(Radford University) and taught school in Floyd County. She also worked for
several years at the Star Market Grocery in Christiansburg. She was a
member of the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren and former member of
the White Rock Church of the Brethren, where she held several offices. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Don Akers, a son, Calvin E. Akers,
and infant son and daughter, and four brothers. She is survived by a
daughter and son-in-law, Frances M. and Alfred Holcomb of Richmond; a
daughter, Ruth A. Akers of Radford; three sons and daughters-in-law, Leon
D. and Virgie Akers, Christiansburg, Eugene and Thelma Akers, Roanoke,
Larry I. and Sharon Akers, Sterling, Va.; and a son, Kenneth A. Akers of
Vienna, Va. and Port Orange, Florida; three brothers and sisters-in-law,
Alfred J. and Ruby Duncan, Christiansburg, Edgar and Betty Duncan, Floyd,
Marley and Thelma Duncan, Baltimore, Md.; a sister and brother-in-law,
Margie and Draper Dulaney, Alum Ridge; a sister, Esther L. Griffith,
Christiansburg; former son-in-law, Larry H. Dobbins, Radford; 15
grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one step
great-grandchild; and three sisters-in-law. Funeral services will be
conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 1995, from the Christiansburg Church
of the Brethren, by the Rev. Donald Peters. Interment will follow in the
family cemetery in Alum Ridge. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9
p.m. Monday evening at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home.

Kenneth Allen
Akers Sr., a native of Christiansburg, Va., passed away at the age of 88,
on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, in Port Orange, Florida, where he resided.
He was born in Floyd, Va., on January 8, 1932, and moved to Northern
Virginia at age 24, where he raised his family before retiring to Florida.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1950 at the age of 18 and served
his country honorably in the Korean War. He received the Korean Service
Medal with six bronze campaign stars, a Korean Presidential Unit Citation,
and other service and campaign medals for his courageous service. He
belonged to the American Legion Riders Association, Va., Chapter Warrenton
Post 72, the Partisans Motorcycle Club, Warrenton Va., and the Eagles Club,
Daytona Beach Fla. He was a passionate Harley-Davidson enthusiast who loved
riding and building custom bikes. His motorcycle friends called him
"Immortal" which was proudly emblazoned on the back of his
leather jacket. He participated in one of the annual bike events to Sturgis,
South Dakota. He was initiated into the Painters and Allied Trades
International Union, District Council No 51 as a Glazier on June 1, 1959.
He retired in 1999 after 40 years of respected construction work throughout
Northern Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Guam. In the late 1960s
he put new glass in the United States capital and First Lady Jacqueline
Kennedy took him on a personal tour of the White House.
Ken was preceded in death by parents, Don and Aletha Akers; his wife,
Margaret McKinney Akers; brothers, Calvin and Alvin Akers; and sisters,
Ruth and Leona Darlene Akers.
Ken is survived by son, Kenneth Akers Jr. (Nancy); daughters, Deborah
Akers-Cordivano (Vince), Kathy Null (Keith), Dianne Pope (Fred), and
Carolyn Jenkins (Ron); aunt, Esther Griffith; sister, Maybelline Holcomb
(late husband, Alfred Holcomb); brothers, Eugene (Thelma), Leon (Virgie),
and Larry (Sharon); grandchildren, Josh Null (Erin), Nikki Jenkins, Bradley
Akers (Liz), Zach Akers, Kirk Jenkins and Christian Jenkins; six great-grandchildren;
many nieces and nephews; and his best friend and beloved dog Rigid III.
Ken will be remembered and missed for his deep love of family and friends,
positive attitude, amazing laughter and wit, funny one-liners and jokes,
love of his country, and common sense counsel and support.
Burial with military honors, will be on Sunday, October 4, 2020, at the
Duncan Cemetery on White Rock Road, Willis, Floyd County, Va.

Leon Donald Akers, 85, of
Christiansburg passed over into the arms of the Father peacefully at home
surrounded by his family on September 29, 2022, just as his loving wife,
Virgie, had 3 months and 25 days prior.
Leon served in the US Army from 1956
– 1959. He proudly served with Company A 793D Military Police Battalion
APO696. He owned and operated Akers Construction company for 50 years. He
loved building and working with his hands.
Leon loved the outdoors. He enjoyed
sitting outside on the porch with his wife, Virgie, counting airplanes. He
ran a Christmas tree farm. He loved the farm life. He raised cows, pigs,
and chickens. He spent countless Sundays with his family driving through
the countryside dreaming of buying land and tractors.
Leon loved and valued his family and
enjoyed spending time with them. A couple of his favorite things were
shooting fireworks with his grandchildren and an annual family beach trip
with his wife, children and grandchildren.
Leon is preceded in death by his wife
of 59 years, Virgie Gilmer Akers; grandsons, Gabriel David Akers and Elijah
Douglas Altis; parents, Don And Aletha Akers; siblings, Kenneth, Gene,
Calvin, Alvin, Leona Darlene, Ruth, and Larry.
Leon is survived by his children,
Karen Akers Havens, Jeff Akers (Becky), Eric Akers (Missy), Cheryl Altis
(Doug), Lisa D. Akers; grandchildren, Matthew Havens (Sara), Daniel Havens,
Josh Akers (Ashley), Nathaniel Akers (Whitney), Mikaela Akers, Ashley
Altis, Austin Altis (Jenna), Caleb Altis, Grace Altis, Jacob Altis, Evan
Akers (Taylor), Hope Akers; great grandchildren, Oliver Akers, Emerson
Akers, Caroline Altis; sister, Maybelline Holcomb; and numerous nieces and
nephews. A special recognition goes to the members of Good Samaritan
Hospice who worked with him in his final months to ensure he passed
gracefully and with dignity.
The family will receive friends on
Monday, October 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. Funeral services
will be on Tuesday, October 4 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with
Pastor Todd Triplett officiating. Interment will follow in Duncan Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers contributions
should be made to Wounded Warrior Project, Lewy Body Dementia Association,
or the Michael J Fox Foundation.

Elijah Douglas Altis.
She is survived by her husband and
the love of her life of 59 years, Leon D. Akers; sister, Christine
Woolwine; children, Karen Akers Havens, Jeff Akers and wife Becky, Eric
Akers and wife Missy, Cheryl Altis and husband Doug, and Lisa. D. Akers;
grandchildren, Matthew Havens and girlfriend Sara, Daniel Havens, Josh
Akers and wife Ashley, Nathaniel Akers and wife Whitney, Mikaela Akers,
Ashley Altis, Austin Altis and wife Jenna, Caleb Atlis, Grace Altis, Jacob
Atlis, Evan Akers and girlfriend Taylor, and Hope Akers;

Virgie worked at Imperial Reading.
She could spend countless hours doing word searches. She loved to watch NASCAR.
She loved the beach and seashell, stuffed bears, and loved to collect salt
and pepper shakers and has over 400 of them, as well as planting flowers
and watching birds, but most importantly she loved her family and she loved
her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
In lieu of flowers family request
that donations be made to one of the following organizations in Virgie’s
honor: American Cancer Society, Good Samaritan Hospice, American Heart
Association, or The Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The family would like to express
their gratitude to Good Samaritan Hospice as well as the many caregivers
that helped care for her.
The family will receive friends on
Wednesday, June 8, 2022 from 5-7 pm at Horne Funeral Home. Funeral Service
will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 11:00 am in the Horne Funeral
Home Chapel with Pastor Todd officiating. Interment will follow in the

Ruth Ann Akers, 75, of Radford, VA, began her
journey to be with our Lord at 9:50 pm on Friday, August 16, 2019.
Ruth was born to Don and Aletha Akers on October 3, 1943.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Dwaine Webb.
Other survivors include three grandchildren, Marcus Baker, Gabriel Webb,
and Gillian Webb; her special friend, Beth Stump; her ex-husband and
friend, Larry Dobbins; her four brothers, Kenneth Akers, Gene Akers (and
wife Thelma), Leon Akers (and wife Virgie), and Larry Akers (and wife
Sharon); her sister Maybelline Holcomb; and multiple nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Horne Funeral Home in
Christiansburg, VA. Visitation with family will be on Monday, August 19,
2019 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Service will follow in the chapel of Horne
Funeral Home with Pastor Frank Peters officiating. Private burial will
follow on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at Duncan Cemetery, 930 White Rock Rd.
Floyd, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to
American Cancer Society.

Janney of Goodview; five brothers, Michael Janney, Howard Janney, Richard
Janney, Homer Janney and Kevin Janney, all of Roanoke; two sisters, Diane
Martin and Geneva Janney, both of Roanoke; special friends, Barbara and
Leon Lionberry, Dot and Woody Allen; her special companions, Tippy and
Jackie; also, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral
services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at Oakey's
South Chapel with the Rev. James Moran officiating. Interment will follow
at Duncan's Chapel Cemetery in Alum Ridge, Va. The family will receive
friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the funeral home. Oakey's
South Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

He was the beloved husband of Avis Akers Dulaney, wife of sixty five years,
who preceded him in death on June 28, 1993.
Mr. Dulaney was a member of White Rock Church of the Brethren and a veteran
of World War II.
Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Prentis D. and Mavon Thompson,
Floyd, Ruth D. and James Akers, Roanoke, Virginia D. and Billy Cromer,
Floyd, Paula D. Hubbard, Roanoke, Mary D. and Paul Dress, Vinton; son and
daughter-in-law, Wayne and Mabel Dulaney, Vinton; brother and
sister-in-law, Thurlie S. and Effie Dulaney, Alum Ridge; nine
grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Maberry Funeral Home
Chapel, Floyd, with the Rev. Kenny Wurzburger officiating. Burial will be
in the Duncan Cemetery with Military Honors by Hillsville V.F.W. Post
#1115. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Maberry

2020, Sylvia went Home to be with the Lord.
She is survived
by her son, Michael A. Duncan; grandson, Michael N. Duncan and fiancée,
Michelle Meadows; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Dickerson
and Irene Duncan; nieces and nephews, Andrea Burrell, Melodie Cox, Tammie
Keith, Jennifer Boyd, Danny Quesenberry, and Rhonda Hollinshead as well as
their spouses.
Funeral
services were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2020 at the Maberry
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lynn Garrison officiating. Interment
followed in the Duncan Family Cemetery. The family received friends from 12
until 1 p.m. prior to the service. The family would like to give special
thanks to J.B. and Debbie Ayers who are close friends of the family and
took special care of Sylvia when needed, as well as a special thanks to
Good Samaritan Hospice for the extraordinary care given to Sylvia in her
last days. Flowers are appreciated, but a donation to a charity of your
choice in her name will be acceptable. Masks are required inside of the

Duncan, age 80, of Floyd, died peacefully to go be with his Lord and Savior
on Sunday, November 25, 2018, at Skyline Manor Nursing Center. He was born
in Floyd, VA on July 13, 1938 to the late Hasker Elvin and Laura Martha Cox
Duncan.
He is survived by his son, Wendell Kurbie Duncan and girlfriend, Debbie
Hill; daughters and sons-in-law; Wanda Duncan Hodge and husband, Gary,
Elvia Duncan Reed and husband, Chris; grandchildren, Tabitha Hodge,
Christopher Hodge and wife, Rachel, Kayla Johnston and husband, Robbie,
Stacy Duncan and fiancée, David Alderman, April Musselman and husband,
Robert, Dee Dee Lucas; eleven great-grandchildren; sister and
brother-in-law, Ellewese and Beamer Akers; brother, Elvin Junior Duncan; as
well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at 11:00
a.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Wes Conner and Terry
Hodge officiating. Interment will follow in the Duncan Family Cemetery,
Floyd. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday evening at
McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Dr SW, Blacksburg.

Roscoe Harless Duncan, 97, of Riner,
passed away Sunday, March 8, 1998, at Salem Health and Rehabilitation
Center.
He was a member of the Brethren Church
and he read his Bible as long as he was able to read. He would quote the
scriptures and say he wasn't alone. The Lord was there with him. He said
the Bible says ``He'll never leave you, nor never forsake you.''
He was preceded in death by two daughters,
Beulah Duncan and May Ratcliffe; and a son, Homer Duncan. Surviving are one
son, Roscoe H. Duncan Jr., Troutville; one daughter, Thelma Duncan,
Upperco, Md.; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; seven
great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Lovelle Akers, Riner.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m.
Wednesday at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with Rev. Roy Turpin
officiating. Burial will follow in the Duncan Cemetery. The family will
receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Maberry Funeral Home.

talking with her sisters and friends and enjoyed visits from her children

Brethren on Alum Ridge Road, with the Rev. Clyde Bishop and the Rev. Roy
Turpin officiating. Interment will follow in the Duncan Cemetery. The

Duncan, of Floyd, was born on April 19, 1932. She was preceded in death by
her husband of 40 years, Alpha Duncan. Sylvia was a life-long Dairy Farmer
and loving wife and mother. On Saturday, October 17, 2020, Sylvia went Home
to be with the Lord. She is survived by her son, Michael A. Duncan;
grandson, Michael N. Duncan and fiancée, Michelle Meadows; three
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Dickerson and Irene Duncan; nieces
and nephews, Andrea Burrell, Melodie Cox, Tammie Keith, Jennifer Boyd,
Danny Quesenberry, and Rhonda Hollinshead as well as their spouses. Funeral
services were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2020 at the Maberry
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lynn Garrison officiating. Interment
followed in the Duncan Family Cemetery. The family received friends from 12
until 1 p.m. prior to the service. The family would like to give special
thanks to J.B. and Debbie Ayers who are close friends of the family and
took special care of Sylvia when needed, as well as a special thanks to
Good Samaritan Hospice for the extraordinary care given to Sylvia in her
last days. Flowers are appreciated, but a donation to a charity of your
choice in her name will be acceptable. Masks are required inside of the
