(Kasia’s Notes:
The law of March 3, 1850, was passed especially for Mexican War veterans, but it also applied to those who saw service in the War of 1812. Under this law, a veteran could acquire ownership without cost, except for fees, up to a total of 160 acres that the federal government had readied for sale. Unfortunately, most veterans chose to divest themselves of their bounty lands. Bounty Land Warrants were not issued automatically to every veteran who served.  The veteran first had to apply for a warrant, and then, if the warrant was granted, he could use the warrant to apply for a land patent.  The land patent is the document which granted him ownership of the land. Basically, the warrant is a piece of paper which states that, based on his service, the veteran is entitled to X number of acres in one of the bounty land districts set up for veterans of the War of 1812.  These land districts were located on public domain lands in Arkansas, Illinois, and Missouri. The warrants themselves were not delivered to the veterans; all the veteran actually received was a notification telling him that Warrant #XXXX had been issued in his name and was on file in the General Land Office. Prior to 1842, if a veteran chose to redeem his warrant for land, he was required to choose land in one of the three states above. (After 1842, he could redeem his warrant for public lands in other states. Warrants could be assigned or sold to other individuals. Most veterans chose to sell their patents to land speculators. So, keep in mind that, even if your ancestor applied for a patent, he may never have set foot on his land. (Bounty Land Warrants for Military Service in the War of 1812 by Jan Bishop McFarland.

The National Archives file consists of many papers. The basic facts are found in Susannah Hylton's (d/o Arch Hylton) application for a Widow's Pension. She filed the Widow's Brief on April 22, 1878 and was granted an $8 a month pension on September 14, 1878 retroactive to March 9 of 1878 when the act was passed.(Note: she died on August 20, 1879). Leonard served 215 days as a private in Captain James
Hoge's VA Militia commanded by Col. H. Wooden (Note: Wooding) and General S. Porter. A Bounty Land warrant no. 375-80-55 was issued to soldier Leonard Dickerson for services as alleged by widow. On April 17th, 1878 Susannah at the age of 73 appeared in front of the clerk of the county court of Floyd County with James Gardner and A. J. Kirby as witnesses.  She was required to provide proof of her marriage to Leonard on March 16, 1826 by license. This was provided by Jacob Weddle Preacher of the Gospel who performed the services in Montgomery County/now Floyd. It was also attested to by George Hylton and Charloty Harris (male) neighbors who were 67 and 74 years old and had known Susannah for the last 52 years. H. P. Hylton and Hendrick Sutphin 55 and 49 years of age also attested to knowing Leonard and Susannah for 30 years. On May 23, 1878, 59 year old William Slusher attested to the death of Leonard on September 17, 1864, and that Susannah had not remarried since. On May 29, 1878 H.P. Hylton also attested to the date of Leonard's Death. H. P. was 55 years old at the time, and lived in Greasy Creek, Floyd Co., VA.
Included in the papers was a declaration by Leonard Dickerson made in February 1851 (he was about 21 years old at the time of service). He was 58 years old at the time of the declaration, and a resident of Floyd County, VA. He avers that he was a private in the company commanded by Captain James Hoge in the 4th Regiment of Virginia Militia commanded by Lieut. Col. Thos. H. Wooding in the War with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June 1812.  He was drafted in Christiansburg in the county of Montgomery on or about the first day of July A.D. 1814 for the term of six months and continued in actual service in said army at Norfolk on the 15th day of February A. D. 1815 as will appear by the muster rolls of said company.  He received a certificate of discharge which he afterwards lost together with his pocketbook in the town of Lynchburg.  He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the "act granting bounty land to certain officer and soldiers who have been engaged in the military service of the United States ?? September 28, 1850. Tazewell Headen, Joseph Howard and Asa Howard, J. P. confirmed the identity of Leonard Dickerson.

1948 Marriage #1: Jerry Paulson June 1948 I

2012 Death: 4-14-2012 Sun City West, AZ.

2012 Obit: Minot Daily News September 13, 2012

Corrine "Codie" Paulson, formerly of Minot and Seattle, Wash., passed away at her home in Sun City West, Ariz., on May 14, 2012. She was surrounded by family at the time of her peaceful passing.

Codie was born in North Dakota on May 28, 1926, to Margaret and Cecil Dickerson. In May 1948, she graduated from Minot State Teachers College, and she married Jerald Paulson one month later. In 1961, they moved their family of 4 children to Seattle, Wash. Codie began her teaching career there. She retired as chairman of the Home Economics Department at Ballard High School, where she taught child development to students working in the on-site preschool, and she coordinated the Food Education and Service Training Program. Codie was a member of the Seattle Home Economics Teachers Association, Euthenics, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. After retirement, Codie and Jerry moved to Sun City West, Ariz. Jerry passed away in 2006, and Codie shared her last few years with Don Schmunk.

Codie was a fun-loving person who stayed in touch with many friends from over the decades and with relatives from around the world. She enjoyed music, international travel, and she was always up for a road trip. But mostly, she loved being with her family and friends, for whom she was a constant source of encouragement. Her life was enriched by her strong faith, and she was always an active member of the Lutheran church.

Codie was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Paulson; her parents; and brother, Richard Dickerson.

She is survived by her four children, Diane, Dana, Mark, and Bruce; 7 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren; her twin sister, Connie Laabs of Seattle, Wash., and Sun City West, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial service: Was held May 26, 2012, at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West, Ariz.

Memorials: May be sent to Zion Lutheran Church, 1800 Hiawatha St. SE, Minot, ND 58701. Codie was an active member of that church while living in Minot.

Seattle landmark's organist always had a song to play

by Tan Vinh Seattle Times staff reporter

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/ABPub/2006/02/04/2002785087.jpgRichard Dickerson's mother made him play the piano, and he fell in love with music.

The boys'-night-out crowds, the reunion brats and the men whose hearts had been broken would stumble into the Dog House and head back to the bar to hear the organist play a Frank Sinatra melody or a silly television tune.

Whatever the mood, Richard Dickerson always had a song, friends and former patrons said. Mr. Dickerson, who played the organ at the old landmark Dog House, a restaurant and bar, died last Sunday from respiratory problems, his family said. He was 77.

For 14 years, Dickerson livened the crowd at the former Seattle institution on Seventh Avenue and Bell Street with sing-along melodies and show tunes. The crowds danced. Even the quiet bystanders would belt out songs after a few beers, former patrons recalled.

"He was good enough to realize that if a person could not sing real well, he would play a little louder to drown that voice out," said George Cappleman, an in-law and frequent patron. "He helped people have fun and made them not feel self-conscious."

Born on Aug. 19, 1928, Mr. Dickerson grew up in Minot, N.D., in a farming community. His mother made him play the piano, and he fell so in love with music that he earned his degree in pipe organ at Minot State University in North Dakota in 1949.

After graduation, Mr. Dickerson played at hotels, churches and weddings in Montana, North Dakota and Washington in the early 1950s, his family said.

By the mid-1950s, Mr. Dickerson moved to Alaska to become a public-school music teacher, returning to Seattle in 1959. The musician became a fixture at civic events and weddings around Western Washington before finding his niche in 1980 at the Dog House, a greasy spoon and smoky bar known for serving ribeye steak with the warning: "tenderness not guaranteed."

He played at the 24-hour restaurant until the Dog House closed its doors in 1994.

Mr. Dickerson could read music but didn't need to, his family said. "He could hear a song once and play it on the organ. He had an ear for music," which served him well at the Dog House with all the requests, Cappleman said.

Mr. Dickerson retired when the Dog House closed. A lifelong bachelor, Mr. Dickerson in the last 10 years enjoyed watching concerts on public television or finding good church services with outstanding choirs or organ music, said his sister, Constance Laabs of Seattle.

He is survived by his sisters, Constance Laabs and her twin, Corrine Paulson of Sun City West, Ariz. Services were held Saturday at the Queen Anne Lutheran Church
