Lois Knight Quesenberry Stout, age 92, of Hillsville passed away Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the home of her daughter Phyllis, in Herndon, VA. Born April 20, 1917 in Indian Valley, VA to Clelia Ettie Duncan Slusher and Walter Thomas Slusher, she is survived by her daughters, Phyllis Q. Robinson of Herndon, Va , Sarah Q. Hargrave of Mill Valley, CA; grandchildren, Sarah Jane Balsley (Alan) and R. Richard Robinson (Karen) ; great grandchildren Matt (Heidi), Kara, Noah, Trey and Reid; great-great grandchild. Several nieces and nephews; Stepchildren Sylvia S. Core (Bob) of Knoxville, TN, Stephen O. Stout (Marlene) of Charlotte, NC, and Stewart R. Stout (Jenny) of McMinnville, OR; step grandchildren Jennifer, Andrew (Shannon), Patrick (Ivy), Deirdre (Adam), Danielle (Daniel), Lydia (David), Rebecca and Nicholas; and step great grandchildren. She is also survived by Paula Asselin, who was like a daughter to her. 

She was preceded in death by husbands, Teddie W. Quesenberry and K. Deane Stout; 2 brothers and 3 sisters A graduate of Radford College, she completed college and was teaching in a one room school by the age of 17 1/2. She gave up her teaching job to raise her children, but she never stopped teaching. She was a member of Hillsville United Methodist Church where she taught the Upper Room Sunday School class for 27 years growing attendance from 7 to 70. She served as chairman of the building committee for the new church. Active in the Holston conference United Methodist Women, she served as President both of the Wytheville District and Conference United Methodist Women and as chairman of spiritual growth. She began the Spiritual Enrichment Experience held each year at Lake Junaluska which has grown from attendance of 100 to over 1,500. She also began the Holstonian, a publication containing information about the work of United Methodist Women. She was a delegate to the Holston Annual conference for many years and was twice elected to General Conference. In 1976 she was the first lay delegate to be elected – a breakthrough for women. She served as a director of the Holston Home for Children for many years, and as a Director of Holston Conference Colleges. She was president of the Home Demonstration Club, president of Hillsville Women's Club, Regent of the DAR, member of the Hillsville Town Planning committee, and served as a director of the Twin County Community Hospital while it was being built. She was a familiar face at the check-out counter of the Mick-or- Mack grocery store, which she and her husband Ted Quesenberry owned and operated for many years. Four years after his death, she married K. Deane Stout of Knoxville, Tenn. They were blessed to be able to travel all over the world on mission trips and for enjoyment. They split their time between Hillsville and Knoxville where she also taught the Pilgrimage Class at the Knoxville First Methodist Church.
