Funeral services for Rosa Ellen Bryant, 71, wife of the late H.W. Bryant who died March 5 at her home on Hinkle mountain were held Saturday, March 8. Rev. F.P. Reynolds and Rev. I.E. Cregger officiated. Burial was made at the Hinkle mountain cemetery.
Mrs. Bryant was born in Floyd county, Virginia but came to Greenbrier county at an early age. In 1895 she was married to John A. Hinkle, who preceded her in death several years. In 1908 she was married to H.W. Bryant who also preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters; Mrs. Rucker Chapman of Nettie; Mrs. Charles Dobson and Mrs. Dayton Swearingen, Richwood; three sons, Ernest and Clarence Bryant, both of Richwood and Henry Bryant of Milton; 19 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Joseph Gordon Gray; one infant son, Harold Lee Gray; one sister, Rosie Reed Cline; and two brothers, Andrew Jackson Reed and Howard Reed preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Jo Gray of Princeton, with whom she made her home, and Ruby McKnight of Bluefield; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; two nieces, Shelby Howerton and Betty Grant; two nephews, Gary Wayne Cline and Allen Howerton; and special friends, Mary and Anderson Thornton.
Funeral services will be conducted at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Fred Browning officiating.
Burial will follow at Woodlawn Park Cemetery in Bluewell. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Benjamin Harrison Reed - Services Slated for GOP Committee man
Princeton - Benjamin Harrison Reed, 71, of Princeton, died Sunday morning in a Princeton Hospital after a short illness. A Real Estate Broker, he was a member of Athens Christian Church, Concord Lodge, No. 48, Ancient Free and accepted Masons at Athens, was Past Commander of Bluefield Commandry, the Beni Kedem Shrine in Charleston, and Athens Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, Princeton Elks and Kiwanis Clubs and member of the Mercer County Executive Committee of the Republican Party.
He lived in Princeton 17 years, coming from Athens.
Born Dec. 25, 1890 at Lake Shawnee, he was the son of the late Andrew and Eva Palmer Reed.
His wife, Mrs. Mae Gautier Reed, died 20 years ago to the day, on July 8, 1942.
Survivors include a daughter Mrs. B. C. Gibbs of Princeton, a son, Dr. Ben H. Reed, Jr. of Delta, Ohio; five sisters Mrs. Bill Wade, of Princeton, Mrs. Brown, of Kimball, Mrs. William Alger of Rock, Mrs. Charles Pennington and Mrs. Effie Mills both of Newport News, VA; 10 brothers, Newton, Major and Wyatt all of Rock, Ray and Wade both of Newport News, Va. Caleb of Bluefield, Rush of Detroit, Mich. and Lincoln, Warren and Calvin, all serving with the army.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday in Seaver Memorial Chapel with the Rev. A. B. Moore and the Rev. Bill Withers in charge. Burial will be in Athens Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Robert Methena, Dorsie Martin, Sam Williamson, S. V. Cooper, Ralph Klingsmith, Frank Parker, Otho Thompson and Fred S. Rogers. Members of Concord Lodge #48, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons will serve as honorary pallbearers and conduct gravesite rites. Members of Athens Chapter No. 33, Order of Eastern Star and Princeton Quota will carry flowers.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Sophia Freewill Baptist Church for Rush Oliver Reed, 83 of Romulus, Wayne Co. MI, formerly of Sophia. The Rev. Cleve Young will officiate. Reed died at 6:15 p.m. Thursday in a Garden City, Michigan hospital following a long illness.
He was born June 8, 1893 in Mercer County; the son of the late Andrew J. and Eva Palmer Reed. He was preceded in death by one son, Arnold; his stepmother Mrs. Roena Wade Reed and eight brothers.

Andrew Newton Reed, 63, prominent merchant of Rock died at his home Wednesday at 4 p.m. following and apparent heart attack.
He was born at Oakvale, son of the late Andrew and Roena Wade Reed. He was the owner and operator of Reed's Grocery Store at Rock for the past 21 years.
Prior to operating the store he was employed as a school bus driver for Mercer County for 15 years. He drove the first school bus ever operated between Rock and Matoka in 1926, while he was a student in the high school.
He attended Concord College and had been a resident of Rock for the past 50 years. He was a member of the Rock Methodist Church and a member of the Bailey Masonic Lodge No. 137 A.F.& A. M. at Montcalm. He was a member of the Rock Ruritan Club and was a veteran of World War II
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gladys Underwood Reed of Rock; one daughter, Mrs. Donald Pennington of Rock; five sisters, Mrs. Virgie Brown and Mrs. Effie Mills of Covington, VA, Mrs. C. C. Mrs. Catherine R. Pennington, 88, died Friday, Aug. 25, 1995. She was a native of Oakvale, WV and had been a Peninsula resident for the past 51 years.
Mrs. Pennington was a member of Morrison United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her son, Marco R. Pennington of Newport News; one sister, Effie Mills of Williamsburg; two brothers, Nathan Reed of Bluefield, WV and Warren Reed of Newport News; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Peninsula Memorial Park by the Rev. H. Jack Lynch. The family will be at the residence of her son, Mr. Marco Pennington in Newport News.

Born at Rock, he was a S/o the late Andrew and Roena Wade Reed. A resident of Rock for the past eight years, he was a retired coal miner and a member of UMWA local Union No. 7086. He attended Mt. Grove Baptist Church at Browning Lambert Mountain and was a member of Bluefield Moose Lodge. He was preceded in death by nine brothers and one sister.

2008 Obit: WASHINGTON, D.C. — Nathan Caleb Reed, 91, formerly of Bluefield, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2008.Born November 28, 1916 in Rock, W.Va., he was a son of the late Andrew and Roena Wade Reed. After living most of his adult life in Bluefield, he spent the last ten years at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C. He was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army with the 2nd Battalion Rangers during World War II. He was with the Rangers on D-day at the invasion of Normandy, earning the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge. Before moving to Washington, D.C., he was an active member of the Bland Street United Methodist Church, a Past Master of the Bluefield-Mercer Masonic Lodge No. 85 A.F. and A.M., Civitan Club, and was a life member of the American Legion Riley-Vest Post No. 9 of Bluefield, Va. Mr. Reed was retired from the Norfolk and Western Railroad as a Conductor and was an avid bowler at Mountaineer Lanes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Hamlin Reed; thirteen brothers and six sisters. He is survived by a brother, Warren Reed and wife Adele of Newport News, Va.; a son, Bobby Reed of Pennsylvania; a daughter, Diana Reed; a granddaughter, Jennifer Jesse, and three great-grandchildren all of Bluefield, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Reed will be conducted from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel Monday, May 26, 2008 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David Hall officiating. Burial will follow at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery located in Princeton, W.Va. with Masonic Graveside Rites being performed by the Bluefield-Mercer Lodge No. 85 A. F. and A. M. Born in Rock, she had lived there her entire life and was a lifetime member of the Rock United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Concord College and was a retired teacher, having taught in Various schools in Mercer Co.. She was a member, past matron, and past secretary for 15 years of the
Rock chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star 130.

Of the Methodist faith, he was a retired U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam and Korean conflicts. He was also a retired school bus driver for the Mingo County Board of Education.

Harless Milton Reid, 86, of Union Bridge, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at Country Companions Assisted Living in Taneytown, following an extended illness. Born Aug. 17, 1927, in Roanoke County, Va., he was the son of the late Lonnie and Essie Weeks Reid. He was the husband of Glenna Stambaugh Reid, who died in 2012. He was a 1945 graduate of Elmer A. Wolfe High School. He served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater on the aircraft carrier USS Hancock. He was formerly employed with the Union Bridge Farmers Coop, then with Lehigh Portland Cement as a dynamite blaster for 38 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Gates of Praise Worship Center in Littlestown, Pa., and Union Bridge VFW Post 8806. He enjoyed woodworking and making things for people. Surviving are a sister, Elsie Gertrude Little, of Littlestown. He was predeceased by a sister, Annie Anderson; and brothers Curtis Calvin Reid and Dewey Reid. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge. A funeral service, with military honors, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Samuel Garrett, his pastor, officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Pipe Creek Cemetery, near Linwood.

Mattie R. Roop, 89, formerly of Radford, passed away on Monday, September 20, 2010 at the Colonial Heights Health Care Center. Born in Floyd County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Brady Henry and Cumi Booth Reed, and the widow of William (Bill) H. Roop. She is survived by two daughters, Helen R. Linkous and husband, John, of Disputanta, and Jean R. Smith and husband, Jerry, of Radford; four grandchildren, Kim Penny and husband, Steve, Jodie Linkous and husband, Simon, Jill Thompson and husband, Kevin, and Sarah Hennings and husband, Geoff; five great-grandchildren, Sarah Beth, Katie, Kirstyn, Zachary and Angel; and a great great granddaughter, Marleigh. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 22, 2010 in Central United Methodist Church, 803 Wadsworth Street, Radford, Virginia 24141. Interment will follow in Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren Cemetery, 3883 Alum Ridge Road NW, Floyd, Virginia 24091. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at church. (src: g. g. grandson H. “Sam” Reed – “They story of Thomas's death was told to me by my grandfather and verified through newspaper articles during the time. Thomas was a farmer and of the Dunkard faith. He was murdered in Trout Valley, Greenbrier Co., WV by a drunk man that came to his house uninvited during a Christmas Day wood chopping party. The man, Kenos Douglas wanted to have a dance. Thomas would not allow it because it was against his faith and ordered the man to leave his property. Thomas went inside his house, closed the door and Douglas fired his pistol through the door hitting Thomas in the stomach. He died three days later.

Douglas was trialed and found guilty of murdered and sentenced to life in prison. He was sent to Moundsville but paroled in 1899 after only serving four years. My great aunt grew up in the same area as the Reed's and knew both families said that Douglas had tuberculosis and that is the reason he was paroled. Bit of interest about Douglas - he was the son of Nancy Hart the famous spy for the Confederate Army during the Civil War.”

Mrs. Blankenship was born on August 28, 1920 in Renick, West Virginia. Lucille was self-employed for many years as a child care provider. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Centerville. Her husband, Enos Beuford Blankenship, and her parents, George and Mary Reed, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Terrell Stanley, Bonaire, GA; sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Roy Christian, Petersburg, VA and several nieces and nephews.

HAMPTON - Washington Harold Reed, 73, died Monday, Aug. 18, 1997.

A native of Lewisburg, W.Va., he had been a Peninsula resident since 1963. Mr. Reed retired as a construction foreman in 1986. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Hampton.

He is survived by his wife, Norma S. Reed; two daughters, Pam Aiken, and her husband, Bill, of Mexico, N.Y., and Connie Jenkins, and her husband, Rick, of Hampton; son, Sam Reed, and his wife, Debbie, of Hampton; three sisters, Margie Coleman of Flanders, N.Y., Lucille Blankenship of Warner Robbins, Ga., and Irene Christian of Petersburg; one brother, Arty Reed of Hayes; and eight grandchildren, Stacy and Ryan Reed, Morgan, Russell and Samuel Aiken and Brandon, Hunter and Dylan Jenkins. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Bryant Jenkins.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home chapel by Pastor Kenneth Dudley. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
