Henry & Elizabeth (Slusher) Dickerson Family

1. Dickerson, Henry H. I

Parents: John Bethel & Mary (Cock) Dickerson. (src for parents: Kelly Robson “Family Ties”) I

Note: from Kasia Johnson I do not know who the parents are of this John Dickerson. A Descendant says that this John is the son of Moses Dickerson, Sr. but has no proof. None of the names of his children lend this any credence. Any help in this matter would be appreciated. KasiaLido@aol.com

The following is what Kasia found at the National Archives:

From the National Archives - 7/2003 Copy of the Pension Application of Widow Mary Cock Dickerson, wife of John Dickerson.  WC# 12988(Certificate No.); WO 212465 (Claim Number) John Dickerson enlisted as a Private in Capt. J.(James) Hoge's Co. of Virginia Militia on July 16, 1814 and was honorably discharged on February 15, 1815. From 1851 until 1855 Mary Cock Dickerson lived in Carroll County, VA and in 1878 she was living in Carroll County, VA (PO Hillsville,) VA She was married to John Dickerson on August 5, 1819 in Carroll Co. VA. The death of the widow is about 1890. The death of John Dickerson is Dec. 28, 1837, Carroll County, VA.

There are many papers in the Pension and Bounty Land file. One dated Aug 22, 1863(?) indicates that John Dickerson was allowed 80 acres of land. Not clear as to the date. In order #21465, dated May 13, 1878 Mary D. was allowed a widow's pension.  A document dated Nov. 1, 1887 from the US Penson Agency states, "By order of the commissioner of Pensions, dated Aug. 15, 1887 the name of Mary Dickerson wid of John Certificate No. 12988, Act of March 9, 1878 Soldiers’ service Capt. J. Hoge's Co.  VA Mil, Rank Pvt, Rate 12, has been transferred to the Rolls of the Washington D.C. Agency to take effect from 4 Sept  1887, the date of last payment. There are statements of authenticity from Rev. Isaac Webb, James Burks, Leonard Dickerson, Fielden Hale, David White, John Webb, and Hannah Webb. A letter dated June 9, 1890 from the US Pension Agency Washington D. C. reads, "I hereby report that the name of Mary Dickenson 1812 who was a pensioner on the rolls of this Agency, under Certificate No. 12988 and who was last paid at $12 to March 4, 1890 has been dropped because of death of Pensioner." In a letter dated May 8, 1878 from Ellenor Goad (male age 88) and Rachel Nester (age 77) with Witnesses Byrum Goad and Thomas Dickens, make witness that they knew the deceased John Dickerson, and are well acquainted with the widow Mary Cock Dickerson, that they were married on August 5, 1819 in the County of Grayson by Lewis Foster, that they lived together as man and wife, and Mary has not remarried. In a letter dated 27th day of January 1851 at the age of 48 she states that John D. enlisted at the Montgomery Court House in the Fourth Regiment of VA Militia commanded by Col. Thomas H. Wooding and was a private in the Company of Captain James Hoge for six months.  He was honorably discharged at Fort Tare February 1815.  His original certificate of discharge being lost, or mislaid.  She also states she was married on August 5th, 1819 by Lewis Foster, a Minister of the gospel belonging to the Baptist Church. Her husband died at his own house in the County of Grayson in the State of Virginia on the 28th day of December A. D. 1837. (It was Grayson County when he died; It is now Carroll County) She makes her statements in order to obtain bounty land to which she may be entitled under the act passed September 28, 1830. In a letter dated April 11th, 1855, Mary Cock Dickerson, age 53, swears to the information on marriage, etc. She states that she heretofore made application for bounty land approved September 28th, 1850  and obtained a warrant for 80 acres which she has legally disposed of and cannot now return it.  She makes the declaration for the purpose of obtaining the Bounty Land to which she may be entitled under the act dated 3rd day of March 1855. She also declares that she has never received, nor applied for Bounty Land. (Don't understand how she can say she received 80 acres of bounty land and then say that she has never applied for it. Maybe she destroyed the certificate and never claimed the land). In another application dated May 7th, 1878 at the age of 76 she attests that John Dickerson was a private in the company commanded by Captain James Hoge in the 4th Regiment of Virginia Militia commanded by Thomas H. Wooding and Col. Houstin in the War of 1812; that her said husband was drafted at Montgomery County, VA on or about the first day of August 1813 for the term of 6 months and continued in actual service for six months and whose services were terminated on or about the first day February 1814. She further states that the following is a full description of her said husband at the time of enlistment, viz: Age 22 years, farmer born in Montgomery County, VA, 5ft. 10in. high, dark hair, blue eyes, and dark complexion.  She also states that it was Grayson County up to the year 1842 and Carroll County VA from 1842 to the present time.  She also declared that she has made two applications for Bounty Land, but she does not remember the date of the applications, the act of Congress under which the applications were made, nor the numbers of the land warrants or the precise number of acres, but her best recollection is that two land warrants were issued to her for sixty acres each about the year 1855 that her said husband's discharge was lost at the time she applied for land warrants and that his service in the army was proved by witnesses. That the dates of enlistment and Discharge are made from memory which is now imperfect she being in possession of no record showing dates. (Tom Quesinberry aged 84 and William Webb aged 74, both residing in Carroll County, witness the last statements.) There is a Service Pension War of 1812 Claim No. 21465 Act of March 9, 1878 Certificate No. 12988 This contains the same information as above. It does state that John Dickerson did serve for 233 days.  It says that admitted November 26, 1878 to a pension of eight dollars per month from March 9, 1878 the date of the act. The Bounty Land D# 343181-80-55 was issued.  It was approved Nov. 29, 1878, The following vital information was included in the National Archives Papers.
                                "March 29, 1923
Mr. E. C. Dickerson  (Kasia’s note: descendant of Wigington Dickerson, son of Reed Dickerson)
Roanoke, Virginia
Madam: (Kasia’s note: why it says Madam I do not know since because this in a man)
In response to your personal inquiry of this date, you are advised that from the papers in the claim Widow Certificate No. 12988, it appears that John Dickerson was born in Montgomery County, Virginia, about the year 1792, and while living there enlisted July 16, 1814 and served as a private in Captain J. Hoge's Company of the Virginia Militia until February 15, 1815.  He died in Grayson county, Virginia, December 28, 1837.

Soldier married in Grayson County, Virginia, August 5, 1819, Mary Cock, she was allowed pension on her application executed May 7, 1878, while living in Carroll County, Virginia, aged 76 years. She died about 1890.  There was a large family of children, no names stated.
