Joyce Ann Craighead Janney Bayse, 82, of Copper Hill passed away at home
with her children by her side on Tuesday, September 18, 2018. She was born
on September 14, 1936 to the late Frank and Mae Craighead. In addition to
her parents she is preceded in death by her first husband, Harris Janney;
her second husband, Jewell F. Bayse, III; daughter, Lisa Puckett; grandson,
Wesley Igoe.
She is survived by her children, Steve Janney, Jerry “Petie” Janney (Brenda),
Darrell Craighead, Tammie Sowers (Ronald), Bonnie Igoe, Don Bayse (Joyce),
Pat Leonard (Mike); 15 grandchildren, Eric Janney, Jason Janney, Jeremy
Janney, Brittany Atkinson, Joey Craighead, Leslie Craighead, Tabitha
Gardner, Barry Sledd, Jr., Cory Sledd, Sr., Rob Igoe, Kelsey Lane, Taylor
Bayse, Nathan Puckett, Wesley Mitchell Puckett, Marc Leonard; twenty-two
great grandchildren; sisters, Lorrine “Flippy” Sowder, Earlean Shortt;
brother, Harry Craighead (Joyce).
Joyce was a member of Copper Hill Church of the Brethren. She was a
wonderful mother to everyone and would do for others
before herself. Joyce retired from Halmode after 35 years and she
worked hard and loved with all her heart.
She loved to travel to the beach with the family, loved her flowers and keep her yard nice and neat. Joyce enjoyed bluegrass
music, flat footing, cooking and family days at the lake. She enjoyed to
sit in the rocking chair on the front porch and looking at God’s beautiful
work. Joyce liked to watch Hokie Football and NASCAR Racing.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2018
at Oakey’s South Chapel with the Rev. Greg Fleshman and Rev. Jay Law
officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.

Valley Hospice and Dr. Don Brady for all the love and care shown to Joyce

Loren D. Kempa, 70, of Bent Mountain, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on
Sunday, April 13, 2014.
Loren
was born in Vineland, New Jersey on March 11, 1944, to Russell and Myrtle
Kempa. He was a graduate of People's Bible College of Colorado Springs,
Colorado with a B.A. and a B.Th. He married his sweetheart, Carol Quinn, on
January 1, 1968. They were married for 46 years. They settled in Virginia
in 1976. They pioneered a Holiness Church in the Roanoke area. He became an
elder in the Evangelical Wesleyan Church in 1981. He was the late Pastor of
Bent Mountain Evangelical Wesleyan Church. He was the owner of Kempa
Construction Company and built many custom homes in the area.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at
Oakey's South Chapel with the Rev. William Sarber and the Rev. John
O'Donnell officiating. Interment will follow in Copper Hill Cemetery. The
family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral
home. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution, please consider the
Evangelical Wesleyan Missions, General Treasurer, 6181 East Apherton Road,
Burton, Michigan 48519. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel, Roanoke.

 Larry Dale King, 63, of Cloverdale, went home to be with Jesus,
November 12, 2011, completing his earthly journey following a brief
experience with cancer. Larry spent his childhood in Copper Hill, and
resided in Cloverdale for the last 18 years. He attended Floyd County High
School and served in the United States Navy overseas during the Viet Nam
War. He retired from Kroger-Westover Dairy in Lynchburg after 28 years of
service. Larry accepted Jesus and joined Colonial Baptist Church in Blue
Ridge. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbert and Nannie DeWeese
King, and brother, Carey King. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Wimmer King;
son, John (J.W.) King; daughter, Crista King; brothers, W.G. King and wife,
Debbie, Roger King and wife, Sherrie, Glenn King; a sister, Pam Clark and
husband, Ray. Larry is also survived by sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law;
aunts; uncles; niece; nephews; cousins; friends; and neighbors;, his church
and work family. A celebration of life will be at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton
Ave. at 2 p.m. Monday, November 14, 2011. Pastor John Dooley will
officiate. Interment will follow in the Copper Hill Cemetery, Floyd County.
Military Honors by Floyd VFW Post 7854 and American Legion #127. The family
will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday
November 13, 2011. The family wish to thank all involved with his care,
Good Samaritan Hospice, Lewis Gale Regional Rehab Unit, Dr. Fintel, our
family, friends and neighbors. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel.

Glenn Joseph, 75, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, July 22, 2002. He was
born in Floyd County, Virginia, October 11, 1926. He was retired from
Burlington Weaving Mill in Vinton after 35 years of service and was a
member of Copper Hill Church of the Brethren. He was a veteran of World War
II, having served in the United States Navy. He was preceded in death by
his mother and father, Lillian and Everett Manning; two sisters, Virginia
Poff and Edith Sykes. Surviving are three brothers, Wilbert Manning and his
wife, Faye of Roanoke, Alton Manning and his wife, Olivia of Graham, North
Carolina, Everett "Junior" Manning and his wife, Mina of Roanoke;
one sister, Gladys Moore of Burlington, North Carolina; also several nieces
and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, July 25,
2002, at Oakey's South Chapel with the Rev. Maurice E. Wright officiating.
Burial will follow in Copper Hill Church of the Brethren Cemetery. Friends
may call Wednesday after 2 p.m. where the family will be from 6 to 9 p.m.
at Oakey's South Chapel.

 Nelson Paul Manning, 76 of Copper Hill, passed from this earthly life
to his eternal Heavenly life on Friday, November 30, 2018. Paul was born on
September 20, 1942 in Copper Hill, VA. He is preceded in death by his
father, Oliver W. Manning; mother, Nellie Wimmer Manning; half-brothers,
Cleve, Herbert, Melvin and Calvin (Jim) Manning; half-sisters, May and
Cammie Manning, and Bondeen Barger. His brothers, Oliver, Jr., Bobby,
Benny, Terry, and David Manning also precede him.
Left to cherish his memory are, brothers, Henry, Rocky, Larry, and Michael
Manning; two sisters & brothers-in-law, Linda & Tom Iddings and
Katherine & Junior Sowers; sisters-in-law, Carmen Manning and Karen
Nicholson; numerous nieces and nephews.
Paul was a quiet, gentle, and humble man. He proudly served in the United
States Army. In his younger days, his life revolved around playing ball
with his brothers and attending races. He drove a
oil/gas truck for many years in Floyd and Roanoke County. Later in life,
Paul enjoyed mowing yards for folks in the Bent Mountain and Copper Hill
areas and watching sports.
Funeral Service will be held on at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 3, 2018 at
the Copper Hill Church of the Brethren with Pastor Dan Johnson officiating.
Interment will follow in the Copper Hill Church Cemetery. The family will
receive friends from 5 – 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at the Maberry
Funeral Home Chapel.
The family would like to express
their appreciation to the staff at Virginia Veterans Care Center and
Maberry Funeral Home for their concern and care. In lieu of flowers, the
family would appreciate donations sent to Copper Hill Church of the

“Dennis” Manning, age 66, of Copper Hill, passed away on Thursday February
20,2020 after an extended illness.
Dennis was born in August 16, 1953 to the late William
“Robert” Manning and Ella Mae (Allen) Manning of Copper Hill.
He is preceded in death by his brother, William “Garland”
Manning, and a sister, Linda Lee Bratcher.
Surviving are his children, Michelle (Mike) Harmon of
Paducah, KY, and Sonya (Tony) Griffith of Floyd; and four grandsons, Trevor
and Adam Harmon of Paducah, along with Ethan and Easton Griffith of Floyd.
Also surviving are his sisters Linda Jean (Robert)
Wright, and Maxine (Frank) Moran, all of Copper Hill, and a brother,
William “Billy” Manning of Roanoke.
Dennis was blessed to have many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at Gardner Funeral home on Saturday February
22,2020 at 12pm noon with pastor Melton Johnson officiating. Interment will
be in Copper Hill Church of the Brethren Cemetery.

great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Noon on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 in the
Copper Hill Church of the Brethren with Pastor Bill Hinton officiating.

on December 26, 1957 to the late John Cline, Sr. and Mary Holt Wimmer.
Karen was a lifelong member of Copper Hill Church of the Brethren, which
was a very large and loving part of her life.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Gerald E. Moran, her beloved
son, Jason Edward Moran, her sisters, Betty Gallimore and husband, Glen,
Sarah King, her brother, J. C. Wimmer, Jr. and wife, Peggy, her
mother-in-law, Catherine Moran, and her brother-in-law, Marc Moran, many
nieces, nephews and cousins, all of which were dear to Karen.
Funeral services will be at Copper Hill Church of the Brethren at 1:00 P.M.
Friday, December 30, 2016. Pastor Maurice Wright will officiate. Interment
will follow in the Copper Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at Oakey’s South
Chapel on Brambleton Ave. from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday, December 29,

She is survived by her children, David Guilliams of Roanoke, Charity (Van)
Wilson of Vinton, Cindy (Juan) Barcenas of Roanoke, Linda (Paul, Jr.)
Thompson of Roanoke and Joy (Philip) Nunley; 7 grandchildren, 6 great
grandchildren; her siblings, Wesley (Marian) Nichols of Maryland, Lena
(Buck) Hoback and Betty Martin both of Roanoke, Fred (Pat) Nichols of
Troutville, Raymond (Carolyn) Nichols of Smith Mountain Lake and Sue
(Barry) Smith of Check; also numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like express their “Thanks” to Amedisys Hospice and
caregivers Terri, Jewell and Brittney for all their dedicated care and love
for Ina during her illness.
A funeral service will be held at Oakey’s South Chapel, Saturday, 2:00 P.M.
December 17, 2016 with Pastor Rick Brown officiating. Interment will be in
Copper Hill Cemetery, Floyd County. The family will receive friends,

Iva Lillian Morgan, formerly of
Copper Hill, went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 13, 2004. At 90
years young, and known for her wittiness, she was a devoted wife and mother
of seven children; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was a
member of Copper Hill Church of the Brethren and was a Sunday School
teacher and a long time faithful member of the Women's Fellowship. Born
March 14, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Jasper and Elizabeth
(Betty) Conner. She is preceded in death also by her husband, Robert (Bob)
Morgan; three brothers, Lee, Sam and Woodrow Conner; five sisters, Pauline
Rakes, Goldie Bartlett, Mabel Poff, Hazel Ferris and Virginia Conner; two
sons-in-law, Alton Shaver and Walter (Bob) Poff. She is survived by two
sons and their wives, Wilburn Harris (Will) and Diane Morgan of Hardy and
Robert (Bobby) and Joan Morgan of Roanoke; and five daughters and three
sons-in-law, Ruby Poff, Sylvia and Wayne Wimmer of Salem, Betty Shaver of
Roanoke, Phyllis and Richard Phillips of Richmond, Dorma and Lowell Yeatts
of Check. She is also survived by four sisters, two brothers-in-law, Dexter
Sowers and Bonnie and Arthur Conner of Copper Hill, Velva Harris Davis of
Roanoke, Georgianna and Leon Link of Bristol, Tenn. She is survived by numerous
nieces and nephews. We loved her very much and will miss her dearly. The
family wishes to especially thank the staff at Raleigh Court Health Care
Center for their loving care. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday,
August 16, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Copper Hill Church of the Brethren with Rev.
Jim Worline and Rev. Doug Jones officiating. Flowers are welcome, as well
as memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, Adventa Hospice,
Bent Mountain Rescue Squad, or Copper Hill Church of the Brethren. The
family will receive friends Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and

 Dannie L. Nichols, 76, died on Thursday, December 5, 2019. He was born
in Franklin County on January 22, 1943 and was the son of the late Eldine Nichols
and the late Lucy Holt Nichols. Dannie was also preceded in death by five
brothers and one sister, as well as his partner, Nancy Keys.
Dannie
is survived by his daughter, Michelle Nichols; son, William Nichols and
wife Amanda; two step children, Ricky and Tonya; along with nine
grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. In addition, he leaves behind two
sisters, Nadine and Shirley, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dannie
served his country in the United States Army and was a retired dump truck
driver for a paving company.
The
family would like to say a very special thank you to Hallie Nichols for the
love and care shown Dannie over the last several years.

Robert
Sherman Nichols, 92 of Copper Hill, VA. went to be with the Lord on his
birthday, May 8, 2014. Sherman was a World War II Veteran, and a lifetime
member of the DAV. He was also a member of Copper Hill Church of the
Brethren where he had served as a deacon for many years. He was an avid
farmer. Sherman was preceded in death by his father, Robert Aldine Nichols,
and his mother, Lucy Holt Nichols, and his son, James Neil Nichols, his
granddaughter, April Nichols Holt, and his brothers, Wayne Nichols and
Eugene Nichols. Sherman is survived by his wife of 67 years, Effie G.
Nichols, also surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Stephen
Nichols (Nancy), Harvey Sherman Nichols (Joan), Timothy Andrew Nichols
(Susan), Thomas Aldine Nichols (Faye). Surviving sisters are Gertrude
Young, Nadene Sloan, Shirley Moler (Jim), and surviving brothers are Alton
Nichols (Pauline), Clyde Nichols (Glenna), Danny Nichols, a surviving
brother-in-law, Cletus Green, sisters-in-law, Esther Reed (Zannie), Ruby
Hurt and Ruth Nichols. His surviving grandchildren are Patrick Nichols,
Henry Holt, Jessica Gillispie (Matt), Michael Nichols (Jamie), Andrew
Nichols (Kimberly), Lori Lowry (Mike), and his great grandchildren, Haden
and David Holt, Aaron and Carleigh Anne Nichols, Lydia Gillispie, Rylan and
Avery Nichols, Caleb and Lily Ann Lowry. Sherman is also survived by
numerous nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be at Copper Hill Church
of the Brethren at 2:00 P.M. Monday, May 12, 2014. Pastor Marty Moyer will
officiate. Interment will follow in the Copper Hill Cemetery. The family
will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Ave. from 2-4
and 6-8 P.M. Saturday May 10, 2014.

 Effie Green Nichols, 95, of Copper
Hill, Va. Passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at her home.
Effie was preceded in death by her
parents, Thomas Jefferson Green and Nancy Jane Shaver Green. Other family
members who predeceased Effie include her husband, Robert Sherman Nichols
(whom she married in 1947); a son, James Neil Nichols; sisters, Esther Reed
and Ruby Hurt; brother, Cletus Green; and a granddaughter, April Nichols
Holt (Henry). Effie came from a large family, and siblings who preceded her
in death include Oscar, Elijah, Luther, Moses, Mary, and Mittie.
Surviving children include her
sons, Robert Stephen Nichols (Nancy), Harvey Sherman Nichols (Joan),
Timothy Andrew Nichols (Susan), and Thomas Aldine Nichols (Faye). Effie is
also survived by grandchildren, Jessica Gillespie, Andrew Nichols
(Kimberly), Patrick Nichols (Corina), Michael Nichols (Jamie), and Lori
Lowry (Mike), numerous great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces. Effie is
also survived by sisters-in-law, Ruth Nichols and Shirley Moyer.
Effie was baptized at age 11 in a
pond near her home. She was a life-long member of Copper Hill Church of the
Brethren where she was a member of the Ladies Aid Group, taught Sunday
School and Bible School, and led the church choir. She attended Mount Pleasant
School in Floyd County, and she later acquired her GED diploma and
learner's permit for driving when she was in her 60s.
During World War II, Effie wrote
and had published a song, "Little Girl Dont
Turn Me Down" (1943). She loved to cook and can
meats, fruits and vegetables. She won a Blue Ribbon at the Salem Fair for
her wonderful biscuits. During a conversation with Effie shortly after her
93rd birthday, she revealed the following which "made her happy"
having company in her home, talking on the phone, going to church, going to
"Smiths Store," selling produce at the Salem Farmers Market,
making quilts and sewing, looking at cookbooks, and going to craft shows.
Effie was blessed in having devoted
caretakers which allowed her to stay in her own home, including special
friends, Rita Dalton, Barbara Taylor and Mary Anne Hodges.
Effies Funeral Service will be held
at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 13, 2023, at Copper Hill Church of the Brethren
with Pastor Bill Hinton Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends
one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.

Kathleen
Lois Wimmer Pollard, 89, of Salem went to be with the Lord on Thursday,
August 20, 2015. She was born February 3, 1926 in Floyd, Va. to E. Banks
Wimmer and May Lillie Poff Wimmer. She attended Check High School and was a
member of Copper Hill Church of the Brethren, where she sang in the choir,
played the organ and taught Sunday school. She was a member of Green Hill
Church of the Brethren where she was in the Mamie Kinzie Circle, and more
recently attended Salem Baptist Church. Kathleen retired from General
Electric after 30 years. She worked in eldercare and childcare as a young
adult and in eldercare for many years after retirement. She was preceded in
death by a brother, John Cline Wimmer and his wife, Mary; a sister-in-law,
Geraldine Wimmer; a brother-in-law, Alfred Brown; and a niece, Sharon Kay
Wimmer. Surviving are her children, D. Elaine Quinn (Jim) of Long Boat Key,
Fla., Kathy P. Cowan (Gary) of Wirtz, Va., Carl P. Pollard, Jr. (Rene) of
Salem, Va., and Kevin L. Pollard (Rhonda) of Salem, Va.; grandchildren,
Matt Shapiro (Jamie), Erin Boatwright (Scott), Stacy Hall (Randy), Jason
Pollard, Leah Pollard, Scott Pollard, Davey Pollard and Heather Pollard;
great grandchildren, Ashley H. Smith (Sterling), Allison K. Hall, Tyler
Shapiro, Nadahlia Pollard and Madison R. Lane; great great-grandson,
Gabriel Logan Smith; brothers and sisters, Bobby H. Wimmer, Christine W.
Thompson (Howard), D. Wayne Wimmer (Sylvia), Shirley W. Brown, Janet W.
Pratt, Meredith W. Walters, and Donna W. Bond; and several nieces and
nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 23,
2015 at Oakey's South Chapel with Chaplain Gary Kingery officiating. Burial
will follow in Copper Hill Church of the Brethren Cemetery. In lieu of
flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimers Association, the American
Cancer Society or your favorite charity. The family will receive friends
Saturday, August 22, 2015 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's South
