Bethlehem Christian Church is located in the McCoy and Decrow League in historic Cedar Lake, Texas, an unincorporated rural community in southeastern Matagorda County bordered by FM 2611 west of Brazoria County and FM 457 north of Sargent Beach. Situated between two legendary waterways, Caney and Cedar Lake creeks, this quaint community is adorned with an array of fruit trees, gigantic live oaks, high yielding pecan trees, and flowering perennial foliage. The forerunner to Bethlehem Christian Church emerged shortly after the Civil War when newly freed slaves organized their first church services in an old log cabin, later moving to an old "sugar storing" brick structure near the Cedar Lake Creek area. In 1872, Reverend Henry Woodard established the Bethlehem Christian Church Disciples of Christ and cemetery at its current site, two to three miles southwest of Cedar Lake Creek. This southeastern section of Matagorda County near the Gulf of Mexico between Cedar Lake Creek and Caney Creek was inhabited by Karankawa Indians before the first permanent Anglo settlers arrived in 1822. In 1829, Daniel Decrow reported Karankawa activities in the area. In 1824, Decrow and his partner Thomas McCoy, the very first group of "Old 300" colonists, received a land grant title of one sitio near the Cedar Lake Creek area. Originally named Dura and Duroc, respectively, a post office operated in the area as early as 1848. A number of Confederate camps were established along the coast in Matagorda and Brazoria counties on Cedar Lake Creek and Cedar Lakes. Camp Cedar Bayou, also referred to as Camp Buchel after the camp's commanding officer Augustus Buchel, was stationed on Cedar Lake Creek (then also referred to as Cedar Bayou) in 1863. Prior to this period, Cedar Lake Salt Works, a salt mine near the Cedar Lake Creek bank supplied salt to the Confederate army and civilians from 1861-1862, until the Federals from Gulf ships raided the site on November 27,1862. In the early 1890's, the area adopted the name Cedar Lake as it became a part of Matagorda County; earlier this community was a part of Brazoria County. '"In 1840 Dr. Francis Moore, Jr., founder of the Houston Telegraph and state senator from 1839-1842, wrote in glowing terms of Stephen F. Austin's choice of the location for his colony which was to become of the richest plantation systems of the times, as Matagorda County."' In Canebrake Settlements, Mary McAllister Ingram cites the following historical references to African American religion: Before 1865, Christian religion had entered the lives of African Americans behind a "veil of slavery." After 1865, "white churches tried to persuade freedmen to remain as members of biracial churches. Black membership in biracial churches plummeted, and membership in independent black churches skyrocketed." After the Texas Constitution of 1869, black churches began educating freedmen at the government's behest. They served as schools during the week and churches on Sunday, and often the churches provided the teachers. In a telephone interview with Leroy Woodard, great grandson of Reverend Henry Woodard, he contends that the first Cedar Lake church was organized as a Methodist congregation. Leroy also referenced prior conversations with his grandfather, Willis Hawkins, an early 20th century preacher, regarding the genesis of organized religion in Cedar Lake. As referenced in Canebrake Settlements, Anglo Methodist and Baptist preachers opposed slavery, and "drew no distinction between slave and white as 'everyone had a soul to lose.'" Ministers of these persuasions actively pursued African Americans for religious conversions during antebellum, post-bellum, and the Second Great Awakening period. Wilhelm Moye, the current church secretary, transcribed and typed the Bethlehem Church history from her father's records. She recalls her father, Joel Williams Sr. (1889-1995) church secretary for seventy-six years, discussing how a white minister "taught the Bible" to the late Reverend Henry Woodard. The Cedar Lake Church began in 1866 with the following loyal members: John Henry Williams, Frank Anderson, Mr. & Mrs. March Merchant, John Petteway, Monroe Carter, Peter Stevens, John Law, Mr. & Mrs. William Page, Americus Woodard, Henry Woodard, and William Brown. The very first worship services were held near the Cedar Lake Creek. Today, remnants of a brick cistern mark the site located off CR 273 near Roberson Road and Woodard Estate. The Bethlehem Christian Church Disciples of Christ was officially organized during the spring of 1872 by the Reverend Henry Woodard. Reverend Henry Woodard sold two acres of land out of a trust to the first members, and a wood-framed building was erected near the present church location. The first church building was also used as a school, the Cedar Lake School. Later, a separate building was constructed for the Cedar Lake School. The 1900 Storm almost destroyed the church building. In 1913, the building was torn down and a larger wood-framed building was constructed to accommodate the increased membership. Reverend Henry Woodard remained as pastor until his death in 1915, having served for forty-three years. The Disciples of Christ Christian Church movement evolved during the Second Awakening in the early 19th century, and was shared by two other groups: the Churches of Christ and the Independent Christian Churches/Churches of Christ. The two groups merged in 1832. The Disciples' Christian Church Anglo founders (Campbell & Stone) believed that confessing Jesus Christ as Lord united all Christians, and that the New Testament mandated for its believers to be baptized by the "immersion in water.” The African American Disciples of Christ movement began as early as 1830 in "free" states. Later in 1867, the Southern District of Churches of Christ (Disciples) organized to accommodate emancipated blacks throughout the South. Through the years, the following pastors have served Bethlehem Christian Church Disciples of Christ: Charles Norris, M. Knight, Charlie Wyche, Sam Brown, S. J. Sanborn, Richard H. Page, Charles Times, Berkley Moore, and Lloyd Brown. Remodeling and construction of a brick sanctuary with a baptismal was completed in 1951 during the tenure of Reverend Clarence Times. Prior to these renovations, members were baptized in Cedar Lake Creek. In 1960, Reverend Lloyd Brown became pastor of Bethlehem Christian Church. During Reverend Brown's tenure, a one-acre tract was purchased from the Woodard Estate for the construction of a modern education building that would serve as an all-purpose meeting area and cafeteria, as well as, lead to the creation of more active auxiliaries. Some of the past deacons and elders of Bethlehem Christian Church were Jim Stratton, George Austin, John Petteway, David Petteway, Wilmer Petteway, Sr., Martin Tone, Shedrick Hawkins, Hammie Hawkins, Fred Hawkins, Ben Stratton, Caldwell Brown, Cash Brown, Sr., Shakespeare Brown, Sr., James Brown, Alex Law, Robert Page, Elisha Woodard, Will Edward, Phillip Woodard, Arthur Woodard, Roosevelt Law, Sr., Cleveland Fletcher, Matt Fletcher, Isham Williams, Reverend Andrew Floyd, Joel Williams, Sr., and Edward Gee. In 1989, Reverend Kenneth W. Bree was chosen as pastor of Bethlehem Christian Church. Pastor Bree continues to serve in that capacity. During Reverend Bree's tenure, the membership has increased to over 300 members along with a cadre of tremendous improvements and upgrades. In 1977, a new sanctuary was built by Master Builder Herman Austin. Dedication services for the new sanctuary were held in conjunction with Homecoming services on September 7, 1997 marking the 125th year of the church's existence. Current deacons and elders are Phillip Ward, S. L. Bryant, Sr., Wayne Alexander, Frank Petteway, Sr., John D. Petteway, Sr., Otis Petteway, Sr., Barney Williams, III, Horace Woodard, Sr., Horace Woodard, Jr., and Lester Urps. Other church officers are trustees Jerome Brown, Lester Urps, Otis Petteway, Sr., Horace Woodard, Sr.; treasurer Lester Urps, secretary Wilhelm Moye, program chairman Ethel Ward, and pianist Samuel J. Williams. The Bethlehem Christian Church Disciples of Christ is committed to serving God wholeheartedly with unwavering Christian faith, adhering to the Disciples of Christ Christian Church tenets, and supporting the church community and community at large on a religious, spiritual, social, educational and financial level. The church thereby is the lifeline that sustains and maintains the Cedar Lake community.
Bethlehem Christian Church Disciples of Christ is an integral part of
historic Matagorda County. Its founders, newly freed slaves, helped
shape the county's progress through toil, labor, perseverance, and
loyalty. Thus, the history of a proud community deserves to be
acknowledged, honored, remembered, and marked eternally. |
