Simon B. Bell

Funeral services for Simon B. Bell, 37, of Clute will be held 11 a. m. Saturday at the True Honor Baptist Church in Clute with the Rev. Kenneth Bree officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

Visitation hours have been set from 11 a. m. to 9 p. m. Friday at the Dixon Funeral Home chapel.

Mr. Bell died Sept. 21 following an automobile accident. He was employed as a foreman at Mundy Construction Company.

He is survived by his wife; Thelma J. Bell; two sons, Michael R. Bell of Bay City and Harry Hodge of Clute; two daughters, Brittany Bell of Clute and LaDorsha Petti of Lake Jackson; his mother, Ola Mae Bell of Cedar Lake; two brothers, Otis Bell Jr. of Clute and Michael Bell of Brazoria; two sisters, Vivian Williams of Lake Jackson and Emma Bell of Brazoria; and two grandmothers, Emma Woodard of Cedar Lake and Mary Jane Bell of Brazoria.

Pallbearers are Eugene Thompson, Ricky Woodard, Leslie Meyers, Robert Fields, Otis Bell Jr., Cuney Woodard Jr., Rayfield Bell Jr., Timothy Williams, Raymond Damian and Edward Guillen.

Honorary pallbearers are Harry Higgins, Michael Bell, Lockie Jones, Gordon Slimmer, Raymond Bell Sr., Raymond Bell Jr., David Hodge, Edward Gee and Quenton Bell.

Willie Bell

Galveston - Willie Bell, 97, departed this life on Thursday, January 16, 2003, at Columbia Mainland Medical Center, Texas City, Texas. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, January 26, 2003, at Bethlehem Christian Church, Cedar Lake, Texas, with the Rev. Kenneth Bree officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake. A wake will take place from 7-8 p.m., and visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, January 25th, at the chapel of Fields Funeral Services.

Mr. Bell was born January 6, 1906, in Cedar Lake, Texas. He was a retired longshoreman with I. L. A. Local 329 after forty years of service.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sallie Mosley Bell; parents, Nelson and Joanna White Bell; brothers, Jimmy, Arthur and Simon Bell; sisters, Parlee Woodard, Pennie Sadberry, Savannah Gee, Corine Fletcher, Ellen Dorsey and Phobe Brown.

Survivors include a great niece, G. Louise Crear (Leroy); godsons, George Pete Henley and James Kirk Williams; goddaughters, Odelia Clark-Williams and Melanie Price; special friends, Vera Johnson and Barbara Price Brown; numerous nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.

Booker T. Lester Bernard

Booker T. Lester Bernard passed away on Friday, August 10, 2012. On March 31, 1956 in Bay City, TX, God blessed the union of Clifford Bernard Sr. & Lillie Gee Bernard with a handsome Baby Boy, Booker T. Lester attended school in Van Vleck, TX and was a proud member of the Class of 1975. The Desire to work hard and be successful was instilled in him and all of his siblings. Lester and his brothers, worked for their father's roofing company in the Bay City and Lake Jackson area for many years. He went into business with Jimmy Sheridan, at B.&B. Roofing Company. Stepping out on faith he later became the owner of Best Roof Top Roofing Company. He diligently worked there until his health failed. Lester met Dorothy Ward, they later married and he moved to Galveston, TX. Following a brief illness, Lester's Earthly Journey was complete. He is preceded in death by his father, Clifford Bernard Sr., and other love ones.

His presence will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 28 years, Dorothy Ward Bernard; his children, Jarvis Ross, Syreeta Mack (Roosevelt), and Christopher Ward Sr. (Nicole); his mother, Lillie Gee-Bernard; his sisters, Sadie Bernard, Gladys Thomas (Andrew), June Bernard (David), and Janedra Ward; his brothers, Clifford Bernard Jr., Charles Bernard, Thomas Bernard (Carolyn), Jerry Bernard (Linda), and Matthew Bernard (Rosalyn); his mother-in-law, Casanna Howard; eight grandchildren; devoted aunts, Rebecca Austin, Jewel Austin, Willie Mae Friar, Ernestine Austin and Shirley Conaway; his great aunt, Mattie Bess; his devoted nieces, Denise Bernard and Lillie Bernard-Jefferson; his loving brothers & sisters-in-law; special friends, Clarence Andrews, Aaron Josey, Joe Wylie, Glenn Jenkins ,Pablo Cisneros, Percy Saxton and Tom Stevens; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends too numerous to list.

Grover Cleveland Bess, 66, of Van Vleck died at the UT Medical Branch Hospital in Galveston, April 22. Survivors include: wife, Erma Lee Bess of Van Vleck, five stepchildren: one brother, Neal Bess of Sweeny; sisters, Mrs. Victoria Reese of Cedar Lane and Mrs. Christene Faniel of Menlo Park, California; aunt, Mrs. Angel Williams of Bell Bottom. Funeral services for Horace "Cartwright" Bess, 66, of Sweeny, are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 23, 2001 at Magnolia Baptist Church, County Road 809 & FM 521, Brazoria with Apostle Harold Higgins officiating.

He died Wednesday, October 17, 2001 at Matagorda County Hospital in Bay City.

Survivors include his mother, Adnese Spencer Bess of Brazoria; wife, Lillie Mae Bess of Sweeny; two sons, Frederick Pittman and Haywood Pittman, both of Houston; two daughters, Evangela Pittman of Houston and Denise Pittman of Wichita Falls; three brothers, Jerome Bess, Charlie Bess and Ray Bess, Sr., all of Brazoria; four sisters, Ollie Burrell and Christine Bivens, both of Brazoria, Annie Mae Moon of Angleton and Cleo Tymes of Bay City; one aunt, Cassie Baugh of Bay City; and 14 grandchildren. Solomon Bess
April 1, 1901 – April 9, 1968

Mr. Solomon Bess, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Bess, was born in Matagorda County, April 1, 1901. He joined the Bethlehem Christian Church under the pastorage of Rev. Paige, where he remained a member until death.

He married Miss Adnese Spencer. To this union 8 children were born, 5 boys and 3 girls.

He departed this life April 9, 1968, leaving to mourn his passing, a devoted wife, 5 sons, 4 daughters, 14 grandchildren, 2 aunts, 1 uncle and a host of relatives and friends.

Will "Rooster" Bess

Will “Rooster” Bess, 80, passed away peacefully on July 04, 2018 at UTMB, Angleton. He was born to Mr. Neal Bess, Sr. and Mrs. Mattie Urps Bess on October 16, 1937, in Bell Bottom, Texas. Will received Christ at an early age. Will attended Bailey Chapel Baptist Church, there he served on the Usher Board and sang in the choir. He attended the Cedar Lake public school system. Throughout his life Will was a hardworking, well rounded man. He was one of the first black Police Officers in the Brazosport area. Later he worked for the Brazosport Roofing Company. After which he began his own roofing company (Bess Roofing). His favorite pastime included coaching softball and baseball, traveling, riding horses, fishing and being the Trail ride boss for the Rocking A-T Riding Club. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He met, fell in love, and married Jocelyn (Jap) Gaul. During his lifetime he nurtured several children including Willie Austin (Danny Boy), Bonita Perry Weyren; Fashon King, Shawn Hanks, Verna Wright, Tim Wright, Rachel Neal, Barbara Baugh, Tinka Cox, Stanshelle Petteway, Patrick Gaul, Terry Palmer, Bernard Palmer, Danrel Palmer, and Consolo Palmer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Neal, Sr. and Mattie Bess, his wives, Katherine Baugh Bess, and Bobbie Jean Perry Bess; Ester Williams, uncles and aunts. He leaves to cherish his loving memories, a devoted wife, Jocelyn (Jap) Bess; his loving daughter, Annette Bess; his sisters, Cora Boulden and Ida (Ray) Martindale, Thelma Alexander, and Gladys Turner; his brothers, John L. (Sun) Bess, Robert (Melba) Bess, Jessie (Annette) Bess, Neal, Jr. (Audrey) Bess, and Anthony (Jackie) Bess; aunt, Rosie Williams, of Angleton; sisters-in-law, Lois (Robert) White, Leoan (Tommie) Jackson; brothers-in-law, Leon (Kathy) Sasser, and T.L. Norena Bivens

Mrs. Norena Bivens, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Woodard was born June 1, 1879 at Cedar Lake, Matagorda County, Texas.

She joined the Bethlehem Christian Church at an early age and was baptized by Elder Woodard.

She was married to Mr. Jake Bivens who preceded in death.

She departed this life Friday August 18, 1967 at 9:30 P.  M., in Freeport, Texas.

She leaves to mourn her passing two children, Mrs. Mary Rowe of Angleton and Mr. J. D. Woodard of Danbury, Texas; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters; six brothers; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Services were held Tuesday, August 22, 1967, at 2:00 P. M., at Bethlehem Christian Church, Cedar Lake, Texas, Rev. Lloyd Brown, Pastor.

Active pallbearers: Deacons of Bethlehem Christian Church.

Lula B. Merchant Bonner

Funeral services for Lula B. Merchant Bonner, 92 of Bay City, will be held 1 p. m. Thursday at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake with the Rev. Lloyd Brown officiating. Burial will be at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake. Visitation will be until 9 p. m. today at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home in Bay City.

Mrs. Bonner was born Oct. 12, 1900 in Cedar Lake to J. R. and Angeline Austin Merchant and died May 27, 1993 at Lake Jackson Nursing Home in Lake Jackson.

She was a member of the Christian church. She was a resident of the Cedar Lake Community and a former resident of Bay City.

Survivors include a sister, Matilda Woodard of Cedar Lake; two stepdaughters, Lula B. Callies and Everlina Spann of Los Angeles, Calif.; a step-son, Dan Bonner Jr. of Old Ocean; a grandson, Leroy Brown of Houston; a devoted niece, Mamie Smith of Cedar Lake; and a number of step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, J. R. and Angeline Merchant; her husband, Dan Bonner Sr. and a son, Walter.

Pallbearers will be nephews of the deceased and honorary pallbearers are the elders and deacons of Bethlehem Christian Church.

Carrie G. Boone
July 28, 1887 – January 7, 1985

Carrie C. Boone, the oldest daughter of Clarinda Willis, was born July 28, 1887, in the Cedar Lake Community. She attended public school in the community.

At an early age she united with the Bethlehem Christian Church, and maintained membership here until her passing.

In later years she moved to New Gulf, Texas where she met and married Timothy Boone. Carrie worked for the Texas Gulf Sulphur Company Hospital until she retired. Upon retirement, she moved to Pledger, Texas becoming involved and serving in many community organizations, including Commander of the American Woodman Camp #128, Iago, Texas. She organized the Edwards Pride Chapter #346, Order of the Eastern Star in Pledger, Texas and served as Worthy Matron until illness curtailed her activities. She demonstrated her love for her community through her service.

She departed this life on Monday night, January 7, 1985 at 11:50 P. M. in the Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City, Texas.

She is survived by one brother, Johnny Gee of Brazoria, Texas; one sister, Dora Burton of Brazoria, Texas; a devoted brother-in-law Joel Williams, Sr. of Cedar Lake, Texas, one foster daughter Fay Woodard of Cedar Lake, Texas, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Pearlie Mae Bree, 60, of Bay City, will be held 11 a. m. Saturday at St. Mark Baptist Church in Cedar Lane with the Rev. M. L. Fields officiating. Burial will be at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

Visitation will be until 9 p. m. today at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home chapel.

Mrs. Bree was born Nov. 5, 1932 in Cedar Lake to Sandy and Luberta Woodard Murphy and died June 5, 1993 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton.

She was a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include 12 children consisting of five daughters and four sons-in-law, Sandra and Lemuel Scott of Houston, Leola Murphy of Cedar Lake, Gwendolyn and Eddie Griggs and Ardith and William Sidney of Lake Jackson and Jacqueline and Roscoe Moore of Cedar Lane; seven sons and four daughters-in-law, Leonard and Bonita Murphy of Hitchcock, Lawrence Bree Jr., Kevin and Darlene Bree, the Rev. Kenneth Bree, the Rev. Mark Bree and Emmanuel and Sarah Bree, all of Bay City and Thomas and Rica Bree of Brazoria; their father, Lawrence Bree Sr. of Bay City; 32 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her father, Sandy Murphy of Cedar Lake; a sister and brother-in-law, Eula Mae and Willie Carter of Cedar Lake; five aunts, Carrie Green and Naomi Murphy of Cedar Lane, Mary Wilson of Houston, Carrie Phillips and Rosa Lee Murphy of Cedar Lake; three uncles, Woodard Murphy of Galveston, Clyde Murphy Sr. of Cedar Lane and Charles Wilson Sr. of Houston; a friend, Harlem Moore; four godchildren; and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Rebecca Hawkins Brooks

The angel has visited again and taken from our midst Mrs. Rebecca Brooks. She departed this life April 12, 1969 at 9:30 A. M. at her home.

She was born to Mr. and Mrs. Dan Hawkins in Cedar Lake, Texas. She attended school at Cedar Lake.

At an early age she was baptized by Rev. Sam Brown.

Mrs. Brooks was a member of the Progressive Order of Pilgrims.

She had two husbands to preceded her in death, Mr. Nelson Woodard and Mr. Will Brooks.

She leaves to mourn, seven sisters: Amanda Pierce, Maggie Williams, Arie Wright, Polly Hawkins, Crisella and Minnie Washington; two brothers: Malcolm and Leon Hawkins; two uncles: John and Gus Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral service Thursday, April 17, 1969, 2:00 P. M., Bethlehem Christian Church, Cedar Lake, Texas, Rev. Lloyd Brown, officiating.

Arthur Kipling Brown

Arthur Kipling Brown, son of William R. and Lyndia Brown, was born April 24, 1917 in Cedar Lake, Matagorda County, Texas. He attended public school there in the community, confessed Christ at an early age, was baptized becoming a member of Bethlehem Christian Church.

Later, Arthur moved to Houston, Texas, continued his education, and united with Garden Grove Christian Church, serving as Deacon for several years. In 1968 he transferred membership to First Christian Church, served as Deacon, Elder and Elder Emeritus. He served faithfully until his health failed.

Arthur was an employee of Sears Roebuck Company for many years. Later, he was employed by Memorial Hospital, Downtown and Hermann Hospital, before becoming self-employed as a Professional Barber.

After receiving training from the University of Texas in Substance Abuse Program, Arthur served as a Volunteer Counselor throughout the state as well as local organizations.

He leaves to cherish his memories: wife (married 53 years) Camilla Oliver Brown; daughters, Bertha Arthuryne and husband Irvin Mathis; Camilla Lee and husband, Thomas C. Brown; granddaughters, Arlethea Yvette Mathis and LaTanya A. Brown; grandson, Clemente L. Mathis; great-grandsons, Patrick Dante and Julius Ervin; sisters-in-law, Cleola L. Berry, El Paso, Texas; Mildred Stanley and Sedalia Brown, Houston; a faithful nephew and niece, Louis S. Brown, Louise Holmes and husband, Percy; many other nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

Active pallbearers: Nephews, Deacons and Elders of Bethlehem Christian Church.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Arthur Kipling Brown was October 8, 1994. Interment: Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery.
