Albert Petteway

Albert Petteway was born on October 23, 1910 in Sargent, Texas to Mr. and Mrs. David Petteway.

He attended public school in Sargent, Texas and then attended trade school at Jarvis College.

He was converted at an early age under the leadership of Rev. Sam Brown, Bethlehem Church. He united with the St. Emanuel Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. A. L. Randon. Years later, he united with the New Jerusalem Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. A. H. Beck. His leadership as Sunday School teacher and deacon will always live in New Jerusalem Baptist Church through the lives of those he taught and worked with in the Lord’s service.

He united in marriage to Emma L. Phillips in 1938.

He departed this life at 8:30 p. m. on June 26, 1991, at Brazosport Memorial Hospital in Lake Jackson, Texas.

Survivors include a devoted wife, Emma Petteway, Freeport; one foster son, Harry Johnson, Freeport; two brothers, Joe A. Petteway, Los Angeles, Calif., Otis J. Petteway, Sr., Cedar Lake; two sisters, Lovie P. Boone, Galveston, Martha M. Roberts, Houston; 5 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Lazarus Petteway Rites In Cedar Lake

Lazarus Petteway, 73, who passed away March 9 in Austin where he had lived for more than 40 years, will be buried Thursday at the Bethlehem Church in Cedar Lake. Rev. Lloyd Brown will officiate with the services planned at 2:30 p. m.

A Matagorda Countian many years ago, Petteway is survived by two County area nephews, Fred Hawkins of Sargent and Odis James Petteway of Cedar Lake as well as a number of other nieces, nephews and friends.

Otis James Petteway, Sr.

Funeral Services for Otis James Petteway, Sr., 89, of Cedar Lake will be Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Hwy 36/FM 521, Brazoria, TX with Rev. Kenneth Bree eulogizing and Rev. L.D. Griggs officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake, TX.

He passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Plaza Specialty Hospital in Houston, TX.

He was a faithful and long time member of Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, TX where he was the Chairman of the Deacon Board, a Trustee and President of the Usher Board. He was a civic minded member of the community, serving as President of the PTA at Herman High School in Van Vleck, TX, and as a Cedar Lake Area Coordinator for Jackson Electric Company.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Ruby Lee Mack Petteway of Cedar Lake, TX; son, Otis Petteway Jr. (Velda Elaine) of Cedar Lake, TX; daughters, Vera Petteway-Nyormoi (Okot) of Durham, N.C., Theola Petteway of Houston, Marsha Petteway-Giles (Elmo) of Carrollton, TX, Gwen Petteway of Pearland, TX, Jackie Petteway of Fresno, TX; uncle, Lee Fletcher (Mozell) of Houston; sister-in-law, Frances “Nannie” Williams of Cedar Lake; 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

Active Pallbearers will be Carlton Fields, Akim Nyormoi, John D. Petteway, Jr., Kenneth Johnson, Frank Petteway, Jr. and Everett Williams.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Kenneth Austin, Granison Boone, Jr., Anthony W. Hall, Jr., Leon O’Neal, Dave Petteway, Frank Petteway, Sr., John D. Petteway, Sr., Wilmer Petteway, Jr., Rev. David Maurice Roberts, Otis Maurice Roberts and Isham Williams, Jr. and Deacons of Bethlehem Christian Church.

Visitation will be Friday, May 22, 2009 at Dixon Funeral Home in Brazoria from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Visitation will also be on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church. There will be no viewing afterwards.

Booker T. Phillips

On June 9, 1909, a baby boy was born to Mr. & Mrs. Neppie Phillips in Bellville, Austin County, Texas whom they named, Booker T.

He was united in Holy Matrimony to Miss Carrie Murphy in July, 1943.

He departed this life on Sunday, July 21, 1985 at 12:45 A.M. in his home. He leaves behind to cherish many memories to his loyal, devoted and caring wife, Mrs. Carrie Phillips, four daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Simons, and Mrs. Dorothea Spencer, two step-daughters, Mrs. Sarah Lee Brinkley and Mrs. Naomi L. Roberson, four sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Evans and Mrs. Tessie Doson of Dallas, Mrs. Johnnie Mae Newsome of Los Angeles, Calif. and Mrs. Gertrude Ward of

Houston, two brothers, Olen Phillips of Houston and L.C. Phillips of Kenny, one aunt, Mrs. Ora Armstrong of Bellville, eight grands, eight great-grands, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Homegoing services for Ms. Ann Luretta Prince of Freeport will be Saturday, January 10, 2009 at First Baptist Church of Freeport at 326 W. 4th Street, Freeport, Texas.

Ephern Prince, Jr.

Funeral services for Ephern Prince, Jr. 59, of Cedar Lake, will be Saturday, July 15, 2000, at 1 p. m. at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, with the Rev. Kenneth Bree officiating.

Burial will be at the Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake, Texas.

Ephern Prince died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at his residence.

He grew up in the Sargent Community and attended Cedar Lake and Van Vleck schools.

He graduated from O. H. Herman High School in 1960.

While growing up, Jr. had an undying love for ranching. Later he worked in the construction business and retired after 22 years as a construction foreman.

He then continued to pursue his love for ranching and his favorite sport, rodeoing.

He participated in many rodeos throughout the country until his illness.

He is preceded in death by his father, Ephern Prince, Sr.; daughter, Ada Lewis; and brother, Hannis Prince, Sr.

He is survived with his wife, Gracie Prince, Cedar Lake; mother, Tessie Prince, Cedar Lake, two sons, Kenneth F. Prince, Rosharon, Kelvin Prince, Cedar Lake; one daughter, Karlisa K. Prince, Lake Jackson; one brother, John L. Prince (Patricia), Cedar Lake; one sister, Ruth Ann Gooding, Houston; three grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. “Jr.” will be missed greatly by his “Rodeo Partners” and friends and all who loved him.

Active pallbearers will be Don Paige, John Petteway, Sr., Frank Petteway, Sr., Otis Ellis, John Smith and Hollis Woodard.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Prince, Kelvin Prince, John Prince, the Rev. Hannis Prince, Jr., LaBradford Williams and Mac-Ephern Lewis.

Visitation will be Friday, July 14, 2000, at the Dixon Funeral Home Chapel from 2 to 9 p. m.

Tessie B. Fletcher Prince

Tessie B. Fletcher Prince, 95, of Cedar Lake, Texas passed away on June 8, 2019 in Bay City, Texas.

She was born in Sargent, Texas on April 24, 1924 to Pinkney Fletcher and Virginia Woodard Fletcher.

Visitation and guest book registry will be on Friday, June 14, 2019 from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel in Bay City.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, Texas, with burial to follow at Bethlehem Cemetery.

Among her survivors include a son, John L. Prince (Patricia); daughter-in-law, Grace Prince; as well as an enormous host of other relatives and friends.

Joyce Lee "Sugar Mama" Reed

Funeral Services for Joyce Lee "Sugar Mama" Reed, 57, of Alvin will be Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Dixon Funeral Home in Brazoria with Rev. Leon Robinson officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery at Cedar Lake, TX. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at Laurel Court Nursing Home in Alvin, TX. Joyce was fondly known to her family and friends as "Sugar Mama". She loved fishing and music. She grew up in Danbury, TX and attended school at Marshall in Angleton, TX. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ernest "Shorty" Reed; son, Myreese "Pooh" Reed; parents, Woodrow "Bully" and Mary Lee Woodard; brother, Woodrow "June" Woodard; sister, Lola "Tut" King; grandparents, Norris and Delila Mack and Emma Jones. She leaves to cherish her fond memories, son, Ernest Jerrod Reed, Alvin, TX; daughter, Mironya Houston, Houston, TX; 3 grandchildren, Elijah, Claude "Tre" and Monique; sisters, Ella Mayberry, Hitchcock, TX, Kathy Carter (Deacon James), Houston, TX and Marita Woodard (Carl), Rosharon, TX; brother, Myreese Woodard (Ann), Alvin, TX; 21 nieces and nephews; 26 great nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
