Funeral services for Doris Mae Collier, 73 of Brazoria will be Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, Texas with Rev. Kenneth W. Bree officiating and Dr. Melvin Johnson eulogizing. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake, Texas.

She passed away on Friday, March 10, 2017 at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

Doris was a faithful member of the Heart of Christ Community Church in Brazoria, Texas under the leadership of Dr. Melvin Johnson, where she loved to sing for the Lord. She enjoyed helping others and volunteered with various organizations.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mandy Parker; father, Leroy Groves; step-father, Ira Woodard; sons, Curtis Groves, Bobby Ward and Darryl Groves; grandson, Tramaine Groves; sister, Brenda Woodard; brother, Curtis Calhoun and step-son, Roy Lester Collier.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories; loving and devoted husband of 29 years, Jimmie Collier of Brazoria, Texas; sons, Terry Groves of Houston, Texas and Vernon Groves (Earnette) of Rosharon, Texas; step-son, John “Peaches” Ware (Sarah) of Clute, Texas; daughters, Brenetta Groves Tolbert (Arthur) and Tanya Smith (Albert, Jr.) both of Cedar Lake, Texas, Veronica Igwe (Shaffer ) of Houston, Texas, Felecia Younger (Billy) of West Columbia, Texas and Elana Groves of Clute, Texas; step-daughter, Alice Collier-Love (Herbert) of Houston, Texas; sisters, Irene Campbell, Lunise Stelly and Marcia Simmons (Vernalder) all of Houston, Texas and Darlene Rice of Arizona; brothers, Harrison Woodard and Micheal Wayne Higgins (Anita) both of Houston, Texas, Lonnie Woodard of Bay City, Texas; aunt, Earlie Parker and great aunt, Unice Groves of Crockett, Texas; best friend, Lisa Harris of Clute, Texas; 22 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Mary Louise Johnson Cook

Mary Louise Johnson Cook was born on March 13, 1944 in Sargent, Texas to Rachel Marie Hobbs. Her mother later married Alexander Johnson from Mims Community, Brazoria, Texas who adopted and lovingly raised Mary. Mary was active in memberships in Christian churches throughout her life. Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in Sweeny, Texas was one of the earlier churches where she participated in Sunday School teaching and church administration. Mary attended public schools in Sweeny, Texas at G. W.Carver School from elementary until high school graduation in 1962. As she attended school, she was a very bright student and also a leader in school activities. She excelled in math and science, academically. She was a majorette and led the entire marching band in their high school routines. Mary graduated as Valedictorian of her 1962 class. Immediately after her Carver graduation, she attended Wharton County Junior College and graduated in 1964 with an Associate of Science Degree. Mary joined the Women's Army Corporation (WAC) and graduated on October 2, 1966. Computer Science expertise was earned and prepared her for her career after she earned her degrees and certificates. Throughout her career, she worked on numerous Information Technology (IT) corporate assignments and contracts. To name a few: IT for the Department of Defense at the Pentagon in D.C.; IT for Howard University College of Medicine in D.C.; and IT for Association of American Medical Colleges in D.C. Mary married Uzell Cook where they have lived in Alexandria, Virginia, Austin and Dallas, Texas. They have four children and two grandchildren. Their children are Sean (Dallas, Texas), Tawynmanda (Austin, Texas), Euell (Tiffany) (Travis AFB, California) and Krystal (Finley, Ohio). Their grandchildren are Donovan and Ciara (Travis AFB). Mary enjoyed reading; watching television; being a Boy Scout mom; tutoring and coaching home-school mothers who have highly skilled gym students; working and improving neighborhood watch programs; and advancing her professional skills, as well as their children's skills. Just note that Mary was usually always seen with her computer in hand! It was common to see her and her family on the beach, at family reunions, in the car, most anywhere using her computer! Mary's sisters and brothers are: Carolyn Grovey-Brown (Pearland, Tx); Ursula Faye Johnson (Houston, Tx); Janice Evelyn Catley (Houston, Tx); Darryl Spencer Johnson (Sylvia) (Prairie View, Tx); Kirk Roderick Johnson (Roi-Anne) (Sweeny, Tx); Deceased brothers are Alexander; Clinton; Paul; Donald; and Nathan; Relatives include: one Great Aunt, Mrs. Criscella Washington, (Cedar Lake, Tx); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. She died April 6, 2000 in Houston, Texas.

She was a graduate from Van Vleck High School in 1988 and in 1990 joined the U. S. Army where she served for four years.

She was preceded by her father, Robert George Cuthbert and her mother, Lucinda Murphy Jackson.

She is survived by: her stepfather, Arthur Jackson, Sr. of Cedar Lake; son, Eric Thomas of Houston; daughter, Chelsea Cuthbert of Houston; three brothers, Courtney Jackson (Heather), Taron Jackson, all of Bay City, and Arthur Jackson, Jr. of Cedar Lake; two sisters, Elanda M. Simons of Round Rock, Texas and Audrenetta D. Davis (Marvin) of Beaumont; grandparents, Juanita Murphy of Cedar Lake and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Murphy, Sr. of Rosharon; two nieces; two nephews; aunts; uncles; relatives; and other friends and relatives.

Mack R. Duggan

GALVESTON - Mack Rufus Duggan, 81, departed this life on Sunday, May 31, 1998, at a UTMB hospital in Galveston. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 1998, at the chapel of Fields Funeral Home Inc. with the Rev. Tim Sykes officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery, Cedar Lake, Texas. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m., followed by a wake service from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 5, at the chapel of Fields Funeral Home Inc.

Mr. Duggan was born October 15, 1916, in Louran, Texas. He was a retired custodian with Galveston Independent School District.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Zelma Duggan.

Survivors include one son, Robert Durgan: a stepson, Robert Fluellen; two daughters, Delores Ellis Brown and Roxanne Holmes Moore, all of Galveston; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a host of nieces -and nephews; devoted friends, Gwen Lee. Albert James Durgan

Funeral services for Albert James Durgan, 89, will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 1997, at the Jesus Freewill Holy Temple Church, 2420 Ave. C with Bishop J. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

The body will lie in state at the church from 10 a. m. until services began. The family will received friends at Green’s Mortuary on Friday, Sept. 12.

Born July 27, 1908, to Will and Willie Ward Durgan in Luling, Albert lost both of his parents before he reached the third grade and was raised by his oldest sister, Ophelia.

Durgan later moved to Bay City and worked as a rice farmer and during this period met and married his beloved wife Emma Austin Durgan.

Their marriage brought the couple three daughters, Cathy, Rita and Dorothy Durgan, and one son, Wilber.

After Emma’s death, Durgan wed Juanita and the couple had one son, Carlton Durgan. He also had five stepsons and one stepdaughter.

After the death of his second wife, Albert continued to live in Palacios under the care of his son, Carlton.

Albert was preceded in death by three sisters, Ophelia, Mogan and Corine, and two brothers, Hesakaiah and James Albert.

He leaves to mourn his brother, Mark Durgan of Galveston; a grand-nephew, Phillip Merchant; children, Dorothy Durgan (deceased), Claretha Mills, Catherine Davis, Wilber Durgan and Carlton Durgan; 16 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

In addition, Durgan is survived by step-children, Melvin Johnson, C. V. Johnson, Leroy Johnson and Juanita Johnson; and 17 step-grandchildren.

Edison was preceded in death by his father, Sharper Edison, in 1953; mother Jessie Mae Edison, 1987 and brother Herbert Lee in 1951.

Pearl Ree Gee Edison

January 8, 1924 – June 12, 2015

 

Pearl Ree Gee Edison, age 91, passed away on June 12, 2015 at her home in Cedar Lane, Texas. She was the widower of Ezel Edison. They were joined in holy matrimony on July 17, 1944.

 

She was born on January 8, 1924 in Sargent, Texas to Edward and Estella Gee. She graduated from Hilliard High School, Bay City, Texas in 1945. She also attended Houston Barber College where she received her barber license. In addition, for over 60 years she was employed as a domestic worker.

 

She was an active member of Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, Texas where she served as an usher and a choir member. She was an avid bible reader.

 

Pearl was loved by a host of individuals, many of whom referred to her affectionately as "Mother." She enjoyed working in her yard, visiting at the convalescent homes and picking pecans was her joy. She loved baking pound cakes for others and eventually became known as the "Cake Lady."

 

She leaves to cherish her memory: five daughters, Verma Wright (Clarence] of Alvin, Texas, Audrey Rollins (Willie) and Stella King of Van Vleck, Texas, Sharon Sidney of Missouri City, Texas and Mary Edison of Austin, Texas; one stepson, Wilbert Dale (Leilani] of Bay City, Texas; twenty-one grandchildren; thirty-seven

Vivian Marie Woodard-Edison

April 14, 1925 - July 17, 1995

Mrs. Vivian Marie Woodard Edison was born April 14, 1925 to the parentage of the late Elisha Americus Woodard Sr., and Annie Lee Alexander Woodard of Cedar Lake, Texas. she was the fifth child of six; two of her brothers preceded her in death, Elisha Woodard, Jr., and Theoplis Americus Woodard. She attended public school in Matagorda County and furthered her college requirements at Prairie View College and Texas Southern University. She taught in the elementary schools.

Vivian accepted Christ early in life at Bethlehem Christian Church. She was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Lige Edison. This marriage was blessed with seven sons and three daughters. Upon moving to Houston she joined Fellowship Christian Church under the pastorage of Rev. D. L. Truscott and on October 11, 1987 she moved her membership to Garden Grove Christian Church.

Vivian, better known as "Muddear" to most and "Mama' to some, was a pioneer in focusing on the "stem" which assured the results dealt with the "Truth." Her warm and consoling personality earned her the respect of many; this would include her works in her professional career community involvement, church leadership and the natural abilities she was blessed with throughout her life. She was truly committed to her family whom she loved dearly.

Fostena Fields Edwards

Fostena Fields Edwards, 78, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 1996 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, 1996 at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 5202 Ave. K, Galveston, with Rev. James F. Harris, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 p. m. at Bethlehem Cemetery, Cedar Lake, Texas.

Visitation will begin at 4 p. m. followed by a wake service from 7 – 8 p. m. on Monday, September 9th at the chapel of Fields Funeral Home, Inc.

Mrs. Edwards was a retired employee with the Galveston Independent School District, and a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Hattie L. Edwards; two sons, Robert Lee Edwards and Coleman James Edwards; one sister, Ella Grice; and one brother, Isiah Fields.

Survivors include: six sons, Matthew, Lockie Jr., Rayfield, John, Robert V., and Daniel Wayne Edwards, four daughters, Cynthia D. Smith, Daverna Edwards, Mary L. Petteway and Adrienne M. Mays; four children that she reared, Timothy J. Edwards, Stephanie Y. Edwards, Rayshonda Simpson and Daniel Jr., twenty-four grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren;  five brothers, Jimmy, Archie, Herman, Hallard and Tommy Fields; two sisters, Mary Lee Tolson and Marilyn Lacy; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Hattie Louise Edwards

October 5, 1939 – August 3, 1976

 

Born to Mr. & Mrs. Lockie Edwards in Bay City, Matagorda County, Texas, a baby girl named Hattie Louise on October 5, 1939.

 

Hattic grew to ladyhood in the Cedar Lake Community, attending public schools at Cedar Lake and Van Vleck Schools.

 

At the age of 17 she moved to Galveston, Texas and graduated from the G. W. Carver High School in 1958.

 

She was baptized by Rev. R. H. Page at an early age becoming a member of the Bethlehem Christian Church where she remained a faithful member until her departure from this community.

 

She was reared by Mr. & Mrs. Jimmie Woodard in the Cedar Lake Community.

 

She is a member of the American Woodmen Encampment at Cedar Lake and the Sunshine Progressive Order of Pilgrims.

 

She departed this life Tuesday, August 3, 1976 at 12:45 A.M., in New Orleans, Louisiana.

 

She leaves to mourn her departure three devoted children, Timothy of Cedar Lake, Texas, Stephanie and Cheri of New Orleans, Louisiana, a loving mother, Mrs. Fostene Edwards of Galveston, Texas; Grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Jimmie Woodard of Cedar Lake and Mr. & Mrs. Archie Fields of Bay City, Texas; Eight Brothers, Lockie, Matthew, Robert Lee, Rayfield, John, Coleman, Robert Vernon and Daniel Wayne; Four Sisters, Cynthia,Deverna, Adrienne and Mary, a host of Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, other relatives and friends.

Lockie Edwards, Jr.

GALVESTON —Lockie Edwards, Jr., 75, passed away at his residence on Friday, January, 13, 2012, after a long illness.

Lockie was born November 14, 1936, in Bay City, TX, to Lockie, Sr. and Fostena Edwards. . He attended public school in Galveston and after graduating, joined the US Army , serving during the Korean Conflict. He later moved to New York in pursue of becoming a professional songwriter. He wrote songs for Nate King Cole, Neil Diamond and others and also produced an album “Harlem River Drive”.

Lockie returned to Galveston around 1987, and begin working as a longshoreman for ILA Local 20 for many years until his health failed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Robert Lee and Coleman Edwards; sister Hattie Edwards; uncles and aunts.

He is survived by his brothers, Matthew Edwards(Marion), Robert Edwards (Janice), Daniel Edwards (Iantha), Rayfield Edwards (Roxanne), John Edwards and Rochona Mims; sisters ,Cynthia Smith (David), Mary Petteway (Donald Ray), Daverna Edwards (Gerald) and Adrienne Mays (Dohn); stepfather, Robert Arthur; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews; ex-wife and dearest friend, Carla Torgrimson; dearest friend, Kitty; devoted friend, Vic; other relatives and friends.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM on Saturday, January 21, 2012, followed by funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church with Pastor Lorenzo Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake, TX.

Robert Lee Edwards

Funeral services for Robert Lee Edwards, 51, of Galveston, will be held 11 a. m. Saturday at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church on Broadway in Galveston with the Rev. J. R. Willis officiating. Burial will be at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake. Visitation will be this evening at Fields Funeral Home, 2702 Ave L. Galveston.

Mr. Edwards was born Nov. 15, 1941 in Bay City to Lockie and Fostina Fields Edwards and died April 27, 1993 at his home in Galveston.

He was a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include his mother, Fostina Fields Edwards of Galveston; four sisters, Mary Petteway, Cynthia Smith, Daverna Edwards and Adrienne Mayes, all of Galveston; six brothers, Lockie Edwards Jr. of New York City, N. Y., Matthews Edwards, Rayfield Edwards, John Edwards, Robert Vernon Edwards and Daniel Wayne Edwards, all of Galveston; his fiancée; and a number of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by his father, Lockie “Coon” Edwards; a sister, Hattie Louise Edwards; a brother, Coleman Edwards; and his grandparents, Archie and Maryland Jones Fields and Saul Edwards and Hattie Edwards Woodard.

Pallbearers will be Mr. Edwards’s brothers.

Will Edwards

March 4, 1892 - February 21, 1970

The songbird's melody fills the air, long after the bird has gone. And when the rose has lost its bloom, its fragrance lingers on. Although we cannot see the ones from whom we've had to part, their memory, like a melody still lies within the heart.

On March 4, 1892, Will Edwards was born in Refugio, Texas. He grew up and was converted at an early age. Throughout his life he was a devout Christian, a faithful member and deacon of the Bethlehem Christian Church, Cedar Lake, Texas. He was always willing to do his part for his church and for humanity.

He became a member of St. Joseph Lodge A. F. & A. M. Bay City, Texas.

He married Mrs. Mamie Edwards in Cedar Lane, Texas, July 31, 1939, and they lived a happy life together until his passing Saturday, February 21, 1970 at 9:35 P. M., in the Gulf Coast Hospital, Wharton, Texas.

Mourning his departure are: a devoted wife, Mrs. Mamie Edwards of Cedar Lane, Texas, three sons, Saul Edwards of Refugio, Texas, Woodard Edwards of Oakland, California, Willis Edwards of Kingsville, Texas, one daughter, Mrs. Ruby Jenkins of Houston, Texas, one foster son and daughter, Lonnie Ray and Brenda Faye Woodard, three sisters, Mrs. Ruby Jenkins of Oakland California, Mrs. Lelia Williams and Mrs. Nettie Shaw of Refugio, Texas, two brothers, Frank Edwards of Refugio, Texas and Alonzo Edwards of Corpus Christi, Texas, many nieces, nephews, a host of relatives and friends.

Carolyn Faye Fields

Funeral service for Carolyn Faye Fields, 61 of Brazoria will be Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Greater Mount Zion Church in Brazoria with Elder Roland K. Hendricks officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake, Texas.

Carolyn died Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Katy, Texas. She united with Greater Mount Zion Church in 2006 where she served as the First and Chief Armorbearer for Elder Hendricks. She was involved in the following ministries; Intercessory Prayer, Mission Ministry, Evangelism Ministry, Sunday School, Singles Ministry and Women of Zion Ministry.  She loved shopping, serving others and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Perry L. Holmes and mother, Ollie Mae Burrell.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her son; Raymonte Bess (Natasha), Manvel; her daughters, Felicha Jones (Paul), Houston, Kindrell Forward (Kotto), Dallas and Toni Fields, Pearland; brothers, Solomon Bess (Zettie), Houston and Rickey Holmes (Audrey), Tyler; sisters, Patricia Holmes, Brazoria and Miara Shaw (Maurice), Houston; grandchildren, Tailor Zachary, Tyler Zachary, Jalen Bess, Dezerra’ Caldwell, Alisha Bess, Dezra Shaw, Kei’Aundre Johnson, Ariana Forward and Yaphette Forward, great grandchild, Yahri Forward,  a special aunt, Cora Goodwin of Brazoria and a host of other relatives and friends.

Corine Fletcher

Mrs. Corine Fletcher, 88, of Cedar Lake died June 6, at 6:00 p. m. at the Sweeny Community Hospital in Sweeny Community Hospital, in Sweeny. Survivors include: Husband, Cleveland Fletcher of Cedar Lake, two sisters, Mrs. Savannah Gee and Mrs. Rachael Mack, both of Brazoria, and two brothers, Arthur Bell of Los Angeles, California, and Willie Bell of Galveston. One aunt, Mrs. Angel Williams of Cedar Lane, one foster daughter, Mr. Naomi Roberson, three granddaughters, one grandson, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral arrangements were through Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home of Bay City. Funeral services were at the Bethlehem Christian Church in Lake Jackson on Sunday, June 10, at 2:00 p. m. Officiating was Reverend Lloyd Brown. Interment was at the Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake. Active pallbearers were Tommie Roberson Jr., Jimmie Lee Woodard, Cunnie Woodard, O. A. Bell, Rayfield Bell, and Ephren Prince Jr. Honorary pallbearers were the Deacons of Bethlehem Christian Church.
