Curtis James Groves

Services for Curtis James Groves, 36, of Houston will be Saturday, Feb. 10, 1996 at 12 p. m. at the Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake with Rev. Kenneth Bree officiating.

Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

Groves died Sunday, Feb.4, 1996 in Houston. He was member of Windsor Village United Methodist Church where he worked with the Apartment Ministry.

He is survived by father Louise Helms of Brazoria; mother and stepfather Doris Jean and Jimmie Collier of Brazoria; fiancé Barbara Thacker of Houston; former wife Ollie Faye Groves of Houston; two sons La’Curtis Groves and Curtis Groves II of Houston; stepchildren Rod Thacker and Vivian Thacker of Houston; five brothers Terry Groves and wife Clarice of Brazoria, Vernon Groves and wife Earnette of Houston, Corwin Davis and Armond Davis of West Columbia and Benjamin Brown of Cedar Lake; seven sisters, Brenetta Tolbert and husband, Albert all of Cedar Lake, Veronica Groves and Felecia Groves of Houston, Clara Johnson and husband John and Elana Groves all of Brazoria and Barbara Hattier of Texas City; grandmother Addie Helms of Brazoria; grandfather Ira Woodard of Houston and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Vernon Jackson, Thomas Bernard, Kerwin Williams, John Woodard, Billy Young and Harrison Woodard.

Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Groves, Vernon Groves, Corwin Davis, Armond Davis, La’Curtis Groves, Curtis Groves II, Albert Smith, Jr., Arthur Tolbert, Bill Younger and John Johnson.

Visitation will be from 1 p. m. to 0 p. m. Friday, Feb. 9, 1996 at the Dixon Funeral Chapel in Brazoria.

Minnie Bell Roberson-Harris

Funeral services for Mrs. Minnie Bell Roberson-Harris, age 86, of Cedar Lane, will be held Wednesday, Jan. 31, 1996, at 1 p. m. at the Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, with Rev. K. W. Bree officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

Visitation will be Tuesday until 9 p. m. in the Chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, and Wednesday from noon to 1 p. m. at the church.

Mrs. Harris was born in Cedar Lake Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1909 to Tom Roberson and Nelie Ward Roberson, and died Thursday, Jan. 25, 1996, at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

Survivors include a son, Bobby Joe Thomas of Bay City, a sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Taylor (& Willie) of Bay City, and a brother and sister-in-law, Travis Roberson (& Ola Mae) of Cedar Lake.

Also two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Tena Roberson of Cedar Lake, and Mrs. Annie Mae Roberson of Angleton, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Beside her parents, those who preceded her in death include her husband, Lillie Mae Harris, two sisters, Willie Mae Roberson and Mollie Parks, and four brothers, George Roberson, Wilson Roberson, Tommie Roberson and John L. Roberson.

Active pallbearers will include Lloyd Bivens, Reginald Comfort, Robert Comfort, Saul Richards, Gregory Roberson, the Rev. Charles Roberson, Willie Taylor and Harry Williams.

Arie Hawkins

Funeral services for Ms. Arie Hawkins, 79, of Texas City, will be held Saturday, April 20, at 2 p. m., at the Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, with Rev. K. W. Bree officiating.

Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

Visitation will be Friday until 9 p. m. in the chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, and Saturday from 1 to 2 p. m. at the church.

She was born in Cedar Lake, Texas, Saturday, June 24, 1916, to Dan Hawkins, Sr. and Henrietta Smith Hawkins, and died Saturday, April 13, 1996, at U. T. M. B. Hospital in Galveston.

Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Grace Ann Williams of Cedar Lake, and a son and daughter-in-law, Lexie Charles (& Carolyn) Williams of Texas City. Also two sisters, Mrs. Crisella Washington of Cedar Lake, and Ms. Polly Hawkins of Brazoria.

Also eight grandchildren, Leslie (& Howard) Amos, John Williams, Brenda Williams, Paula Williams, Rotonda Harkless, Bonita (& Leonard) Murphy, Savannah (& Richard) Taylor, and Seautry Harkless; and seven great-grandchildren, LaToya, Antoinette, Richesha, Nathaniel, Jr., Harmony, Robert and Ashley. Also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, and a family of friends.

Beside her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Jane Lee Woodard, Amandy Pierce, Maggie Williams, Minnie Washington and Rebecca Brooks and four brothers, Leon Hawkins, Dan Hawkins Jr., Nelse Hawkins and Malcolm Hawkins.

Active pallbearers will include A. B. Jones, Jerry Higgins, Glen Lewis, Tracy Higgins, Richard Taylor, Ray Murphy and Frank Petteway. Honorary pallbearers will include her sons.

Ella Mae Hawkins
February 16, 1929 - April 12, 2016

Funeral services for Mrs. Ella Mae Hawkins, 87, of Bay City, Texas, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 23, 2016, at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, Texas, with the Rev. K. W. Bree, pastor; and the Rev. L. V. Harvey, eulogist.

Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, April 22, 2016, at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel in Bay City.

She was born in Cedar Lake, Texas on February 16, 1929, to Eddie Urps Sr. and Corine Durgan Urps; and passed away April 12, 2016.

Survivors include her son, the Rev. Herbert Hawkins Jr. (Theresa); four grandchildren, Patrick, Angela, Damon (Roshanda), and Phoebe; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Mattie Bess; five sisters-in-law, Heddie Hawkins, Gertrude Williams, Addie Smith, Lola Mack and Mrs. Sidney Mack; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Herbert L. Hawkins Sr.; parents, Eddie and Corine Urps; one sister, Willie Lou Moore; and three brothers, Albert Urps Sr., Eddie Urps and Lester Urps.

Evelyn Gee Hawkins

September 9, 1891 – March 10, 1972

Mrs. Evelyn Hawkins is the daughter of the late Mr. Locky and Mrs. Sarah Gee. She attended public school in Matagorda County Texas. At a very young age she joined Bethlehem

Christian Church. She was an active member until she aged and her health would not allow her to continue, but she kept her faith.

Mrs. Hawkins was married to the late Nelse Hawkins and to that union six children were born. Her husband died March 24, 1924, leaving her to rear their very young family alone. Several years later, she married March Merchant. To that union one child was born.

Survivors: Mrs. Hazel M. Russell of Riverside, California, with whom she lived until death; Mrs. Proxie Hawkins and Douglass Merchant of Riverside, California; Eddie, Wendell, and Mrs. Sarah Jordon who reside in Houston, Texas; Sullivan Hawkins of Cedar Lake Texas.

She leaves one sister, Mrs. Hattie J. Woodard of Cedar Lake, Texas; twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a large number of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral service Sunday, March 19, 1972, 2:00 P. M., Bethlehem Christian Church, Cedar Lake, Texas, Rev. Lloyd Brown, officiating.

Funeral services for Johnny Earl Hawkins Sr., 73, of Houston, Texas will be held Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home in Bay City.

Burial will follow at Smith Cemetery in Cedar Lake, Texas.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2018 at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home.

Among his survivors include his wife, Joyce Merchant Hawkins.

Madelene Fletcher Hawkins

Mrs. Madelene Fletcher Hawkins, 58, of Houston. She was a former resident of Cedar Lake. Survivors include: step-mother, Mrs. Alonia Fletcher Keyes of Cedar Lane; sisters, Mrs. Tessie B. Prince of Cedar Lake and Mrs. Ozola Hughes of Houston; brothers, Virgil and Leon of Houston, Ester of Chicago, Ill.; uncles, Matt and Cleveland Fletcher of Houston; one aunt, Mrs. Mamie Lou Edwards of Cedar Lake. The funeral will be held at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake Saturday, May 31 at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Fred Hawkins officiating. Interment will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday at 4 p. m. until 9:30 p. m. at the funeral home and Saturday at 1 p. m. until 2 p. m. at the church. Pallbearers include: Victor Hobbs, Clifford Fletcher, Curtis Clark, Ester Fletcher, Melvin Williams, Woodard Smith, Ephern Prince, Jr. and Hannis Prince. Malcolm Hawkins
September 25, 1903 – May 23, 1969

The angel has visited again and taken from our midst Bro. Malcolm Hawkins. He departed this life May 23, 1969 at 11:35 A. M. at Matagorda General Hospital.

He was born to Mr. and Mrs. Dan Hawkins in Cedar Lake, Texas, September 25, 1903. He attended school at Cedar Lake.

He was baptized by Rev. Moore.

He leaves to mourn, seven sisters: Jane Lee Woodard, Amanda Pierce, Maggie Williams, Arie Wright, Polly Hawkins, Crisella and Minnie Washington; one brother, Leon Hawkins; two uncles, John and Gus Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Maude Hawkins, 102, of Sargent, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, with the Rev. K.W. Bree, eulogist. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 2 until 8 p.m. at the chapel.

She was born in Cedar Lake, Texas, January 9, 1906, to Gertrude Wilson and George Austin, and passed away July 3, 2008 in Cedar Lake.

Survivors include: two daughters, Gertrude Williams of Cedar Lake and Addie Smith of Sargent; and two sons, Phillip Mack of Bay City and the Rev. Shedrick Hawkins of Los Angeles, California. Also five daughters-in-law, Emma Mack and Ella Mae Hawkins, both of Bay City, Lola Mack of Magnolia, Joyce Hawkins of Houston, and Hettie Hawkins of Los Angeles, and one son-in-law, Jimmie Times of Bay City. Also 35 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren, 28 great-great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
