Sullivan Hawkins

Matagorda County Man Dies in Fire
Second Fatality of Year

By Tom Jones

A 62-year old Matagorda County native became the county’s second fire fatality of the year early Friday.

The body of Sullivan Hawkins was found in the ruins of his house at Churchill Road near Sargent approximately 6 a. m.

It was impossible to immediately determine the cause of death since the house had been completely destroyed and the body was badly burned.

Hawkins’ body was found lying face down next to his bathtub.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Duncan Roberts Funeral Home in Bay City.

According to Deputy Sherriff Sam Hurta, the fire was first seen by Lester Urps, who was returning home from his job in Freeport at 5:45 a. m.

Hurta said Urps told him that when he saw the fire the roof had already caved in and the walls had crumbled. Urps went to the nearby residence of R. L. Smith and informed him of the fire.

The two returned to the house just in time to see the walls cave in.

Hurta said the house only had two doors, one facing north and the other on the south end of the building.

He surmised that Hawkins may have been confused by the smoke and entered the bathroom by mistake. It is also possible that Hawkins may have tripped and fallen against the bathtub. The position and position of the body lent some credulence to that theory.

Justice of the Peace Kirk Richardson pronounced Hawkins dead at the scene.
