Norma Jean “Jeanie” Walker, 75, of Bay City, went on to glory on March 2, 2022. She was born October 24, 1946 in Beaumont, TX to the late Jesse Denman Kersh and Anna Andrews Kersh. Growing up in Beaumont with her six siblings, Jeanie and her family moved around the Gulf Coast with her father’s job in the oil field. She settled in Bay City, where she would meet and unknowingly befriend her future sister-in-law. Through a little matchmaking from that new friend and mail correspondence; she met the love of her life, Glenn. Upon his return home from the Navy, they met formally and began a short courtship before their marriage on September 6, 1963. They first lived in Bay City, Wadsworth, and Matagorda before planting permanent roots in Bay City, in the same house they and so many others call home to this day. Jeanie and Glenn welcomed four children into the world, who would altogether bless them with 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Jeanie’s roles of wife, mother, and Mawmaw were her identity and treasure while on this earth. She loved her family with everything she had and was a beautiful example of unconditional love to everyone she met. A natural born Cajun, Jeanie had a zeal about her that was revered and sometimes feared. “I’m passionate” is what she would jokingly say after letting her opinions be known in a given situation. She had a love for our great nation and would proudly display her American flag in the front yard at all times. Jeanie had so many passions including hosting family gatherings, gardening, cooking gumbo, decorating for Christmas, quilting/crocheting, and welcoming the first cold fronts each fall with such anticipation after the long, hot, Texas summers. Jeanie had a faith in Jesus that could move mountains. After giving her heart to the Lord, her life was forever changed for the better. She was a living testimony to the goodness of God and His love for us until the day she went to be with Him for eternity. Jeanie is preceded in death by her parents, and beloved son Glenn Walker Jr. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Glenn Walker Sr.; daughters Terri Savage (Pip) and Wendy Baker (Jeff); son Cody Walker (Amy); sisters Ruthie Webre, Judy Guidry, Sandra Kersh and Vicki Hauff; brothers Buddy Kersh and Gary Kersh; grandchildren Glenn Walker III (Heather), Kelli Patton (Nick), Emily Bohls(Josh), Tyler Baker, Audrey Baker, Clara Baker, Reid Baker, Cody Walker Jr., Cade Walker, and great-grandchildren Lily Walker, Christian Walker, Caleb Walker, Dakota Patton, Dallas Patton, and Evan Patton. Information of what caused the death of Mrs. Hula Wheeler, who was brought to the J. W. McKelvey home last night after an auto ride with Ray Burton, of Gulf, is difficult to obtain, because of the woman’s unconsciousness after the trouble and her subsequent death at 9 o’clock this morning at the Loos Hospital. From what can be learned Mrs. Wheeler, a telephone operator, and her escort were riding and according to Burton’s statement she jumped from the automobile while it was going at good speed, falling against something and breaking her skull back of the ear. Burton returned her to the McKelvey home and is said to have made such a statement. Physicians were summoned and took the wounded woman to the hospital where she died without regaining consciousness. Mrs. Wheeler was 23 years old and leaves two small children in Beaumont. Her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Delk, an uncle, J. B. Delk, and a brother and sister all live here. At the time of going to press no funeral arrangements have been announced.

Sydonia Ann Manna Winters, age 79, was a loving mother, grammy, aunt and cousin. She passed away peacefully on March 21, 2023. Sydonia was born October 13, 1943 in Bay City, Texas to the late Ludvik Manna and Myrtle Burke Manna. She loved her hometown and continued living there after her graduation from Bay City High School in 1962. Sydonia was a beautiful, intelligent, compassionate, and generous person. She was very active in the community. She was a Girl Scout Troop Leader for many years and served as a South Texas Girl Scout Council Member. Sydonia was also a substitute teacher and a proud member of the Matagorda County United Way. She thoroughly enjoyed visiting with treasured friends and making new ones. She was always eager to learn of their life experiences. Every holiday, big or small, Sydonia anticipated having her room decorated at the nursing home. This was one of her favorite things and she looked forward to it. She would stare at all of the beauty in her room and loved to show it to to all of the staff and residents. She loved that it brought a smile to everyone’s face. That was her nature, happiness and helping others, even when she wasn’t physically able to. Sydonia LOVED butterflies, they were very special to her. Butterflies are messengers from the spirit. The butterfly has the most significant number of symbolic meanings, the most important butterfly meaning being personal transformation. Other definitions include change, hope, endurance, renewal and courage. Sydonia also LOVED George Strait. Anytime he had a new song come out, that would become her new favorite! George Strait songs would be played on repeat for hours and hours! The most requested were Amarillo by Morning, The Fireman, Check Yes or No, and The Chair. She obviously had great taste in music! Sydonia is survived by her brother, Richard “Smoky” Manna and his wife Kay of Helotes, Texas; her daughters, Stacy Winters of Sealy, Texas and Connie Cunningham of Markham, Texas; her grandchildren, Brittainy Hodges and husband Jarred of Bay City, Texas, Brandon Gavranovic and wife Megan of El Paso, Texas, Brian Gavranovic and wife Cheyenne of Bay City, Texas; great grandchildren, Jameson Hodges, Kimberly Gavranovic, Waylon and Esme Gavranovic; close family friends, Janet Sierra and Kay Winters; several cousins, nieces, nephews; and numerous friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ludvik and Myrtle Manna. The family would love to thank the staff of the Matagorda Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. This was Sydonia’s home for the last six years, and all of the love and care she received during that time will never go unnoticed. All of you were her dear friends and extended family. Per Sydonia’s request, there will not be a funeral nor a memorial service. Donations in her honor may be made to the Matagorda Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Activities Department. “As I sit in heaven and watch you everyday, I try to let you know with signs I never went away. I hear you when you’re laughing, and watch you as you sleep. I even place my arms around you to calm you as you weep. I see you wish the days away, begging to have me home. So I try to send you signs so you know you are not alone. Don’t feel guilty that you have life that was denied to me. Heaven is truly beautiful, just you wait and see. So live your life, laugh again, enjoy yourself, be free. Then I know with every breath you take you’ll be taking one for me.”
