Carrie Mae Woodard Brown

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Willie Woodard on April 9, 1913 at Cedar Lake, Matagorda County, Texas, a baby girl named Carrie Mae.

She attended Elementary School at Cedar Lake and completed High School at Powell’s Point, Kendleton, Texas. She attended Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas.

She confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized by Rev. Sam Brown.

She married Mr. William Paige who preceded her in death. To this union one daughter was born named Annie Lee Paige.

On March 26, 1940 she married Rev. Caldwell Brown. To this union three children were born, one of which preceded her in death. From a previous marriage of Rev. Brown she reared his seven small children, two girls and five boys. Two sons preceded this death. She was also rearing two foster granddaughters, Miss Mary Jane Woodard and Vernessa Brown.

In 1959 Mrs. Brown became Vice President of Bethlehem Senior Choir and in 1961 she became President of the choir and remained a faithful, loyal, cooperative and diligent worker.

She was the Worthy Recorder of Sunshine Sanctuary No. 88 of the Progressive Order of Pilgrims for a number of years.

Mrs. Brown served in many capacities of Bethlehem Christian Church and worked to the utmost of her abilities.

She passed this life on Monday, November 11, 1968 at 11:00 A. M.

She leaves to mourn her passing a devoted husband, Rev. Caldwell Brown; four daughters, Mrs. Annie Lee Paige, Patricia Ann Brown, Mrs. Erma Lee Jonigan, and Mrs. Pinkie Mae Brooks. Four sons, Casanova, Hayward, Irving and Cash. Two sisters, Mrs. Nora Williams and Mrs. Mary Thomas. Two brothers, Mr. Andrew and Mr. Nathaniel Woodard. Forty-four grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers: Deacons of Bethlehem Christian Church.

Honorary pallbearers: Casanova Brown, Hayward Brown, Irving Brown, Cash Brown, Hubert Brown, Jr. and Leroy Woodard.

Services were Saturday, November 16, 1968, 2:00 p. m., at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, Texas with Rev. Lloyd Brown officiating.

Clifford Donnell Brown

Graveside services for Clifford Donnell Brown, 48, of Freeport will be Wed., Nov. 13, 2002, at Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery at 11 a.m. in Cedar Lake, [Matagorda County, Texas].

He died Oct. 29, 2002, at his residence.

He is survived by two sons, Clifford Brown Jr. and James Brown, both of Cedar Lake; two daughters, Sabrina Brown and Priscilla Brown, both of Cedar Lake; one brother, Albert James Brown of California; one sister, Catherine Louise Brown of Freeport; three uncles, A.J. Brown and Roy Brown, both of Bay City, and Kermit Brown of Pledger; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Harry Moley Brown, Sr.

Funeral service for Harry Moley Brown, Sr., 74 of Bay City will be Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake with Rev. Kenneth Bree officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake, Texas.

 

He died Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at Matagorda Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bay City, Texas. Harry accepted Christ at an early age and united with the Bethlehem Christian Church. He attended public school in the Cedar Lake School, Cedar Lake, TX and O.H. Herman High School in Van Vleck, TX. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing dominoes. He also enjoyed spending quality time with his family at family gatherings.

 

Preceding him in death were his parents, Shakespeare and Lucy Brown; sisters; Alzenia Brown, Angeline Edison, Cora Sibley, Victoria Brown, Flora Hunt and Lola Bryant and brothers; Shakespeare Brown, Jr. (Buddy) and Gifford Brown.

 

He is survived by his Wife: Johnnie S. Brown, Children: Harry Brown, Jr. (Demitra), Michael Brown, Lawrence Brown, Maurice Brown , Leanor (Tina) Brown, Jean Morgan (Charles), Felecia Whitaker (Morgan), Clifton Johnson and Michael Parks, step-son; Lawrence Johnson, Jr. (Shelia), Brother, Hosea Brown (Patricia); Sisters, Cleopatra Thomas (Charles), Luberta Brown, Lydia Dailey and Lucy Tyson (Edward). A Special Friend: Joyice. He also leaves a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.

 

Active pallbearers will be Roy Brown, Charles R. Thomas, Wayne Dailey, Terrence Brown, Martin Dailey and Phelp Brown.

 

Honorary pallbearers will be nephews and great nephews.

James Franklin Brown

February 25, 1909 – September 4, 1981

On February 25, 1909, at Cedar Lake, Texas, Matagorda County, was born a son to Lydia and William R. Brown, whom they named, James Franklin Brown.

James attended Public School and grew to manhood in the Cedar Lake Community.

At an early age, he confessed Christ and was baptized by (now the late) Elder Henry Woodard.

In 1927, James was united in Holy Matrimony to Miss Annie Louise Todd. To this union were born two sons, of which one preceded him in death.

James was ordained as a deacon of Grove Street Christian Church under the pastorage of Rev. O. Zollar, and soon thereafter, he was installed as an elder under Rev. R. H. Paige.

He departed this life Friday, September 4, 1981, at 7:15 A. M., in the Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City, Texas. He leaves, a loving son, Louis S. Brown and daughter-in-law, Ester of Houston, two grandsons, Ronald and Anthony Brown, two granddaughters, Pamela Cosby and Angela Carter, one great-granddaughter, Ereka Brown, and one brother, Arthur Brown and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Leroy "L. R." Brown

Funeral services for Leroy "L. R." Brown, 59 of Dallas formerly of Brazoria was at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 12, 2006 at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake. Burial followed at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake, Texas.

He went home to be with the Lord on August 6, 2006 in Dallas, Texas. He graduated from Charlie Brown High School in 1965. He left GM to fulfill a dream of owning his own business. He operated Stiks Sporting Goods for 17 years. He was a member of St. Luke Community UMC.

He is survived by: his wife, Lena Brown of Dallas; sons, Deryl Brown and Sharlyndra and Ashdon Brown; sister, Sarah Fields and the Rev. M.L. of Brazoria; and other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Charlie Brown Class of 1965.

Visitation was from 5 until 8 p.m. on Friday, August 11, 2006 at Dixon Funeral Home in Brazoria, Texas.

Memorial service was at 8 p.m. Thursday, August 10, 2006 at Evergreen Funeral Home in Dallas, Texas.

Luberta Brown
February 15, 1934 - July 31, 2015

Funeral services for Luberta Brown will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 8, 2015, at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, Texas, with the Rev. K. W. Bree officiating.

Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

Visitation will be Friday, August 7, 201,5 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, 2500 Avenue C, Bay City, Texas.

Luberta was born to Shakespeare Brown Sr. and Lucy Merchant Brown, on February 15, 1934. She went to be with her Lord on July 31, 2015.

She grew up in the Cedar Lake community, where she was baptized at an early age, at the Bethlehem Christian Church, by the late Rev. R. H. Paige. She attended public school in Cedar Lake and Van Vleck, graduating from O. H. Herman High School in Van Vleck, in 1953.

Luberta attended cosmetology school in Houston, Texas. Upon completion of her education she made her home in Cedar Lake. She worked many years as a cosmetologist and seamstress, serving many from across the community. She had a pleasant personality and was a joy to be around.

Luberta was a faithful member of the Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake. She avidly supported the life and work of the church. She faithfully attended Sunday School and diligently participated in the Women’s Ministry. She was a determined warrior for our God seeking to promote His eternal Word.

Luberta leaves to cherish her memory three loving sons, Jerome Brown (Wilma), Rev. Andrew Floyd, and March Brown, all of Cedar Lake; three sisters, Cleopatra Thomas (Charles), Lydia Dailey, and Lucy Tyson (Edward), all of Cedar Lake; one brother, Hosea Brown (Patricia) of Houston; nine grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; six sisters; two daughters-in-law, Paralee Brown and Wanda Floyd; and one grandson, Darren D. Floyd.

Lucy Brown

April 17, 1904 – September 4, 1978

On April 17, 1904, a baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Merchant in Cedar Lake, Matagorda County, Texas whom they named, Lucy.

She attended public school and grew to womanhood in the Cedar Lake Community.

She confessed Christ and was baptized by the late Elder Henry Woodard.

In 1922, Lucy was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. Shakespeare Brown. To this union 13 children were born. One child and her husband preceded her in death.

She was a very faithful member of the church until her health failed. She departed this life on Monday, September 4, 1978 at 11:00 P. M. at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City, Texas. She leaves to mourn her passing, eight daughters, Mrs. Lola McCanick, Mrs. Cleo Thomas, Mrs. Cora Sibley, Miss Luberta Brown, Lydia Dailey and Miss Victoria Brown, Mrs. Flora Hunt of Houston and Mrs. Angeline Edison of Freeport, one adopted daughter, Lucy L. Brown of Cedar Lake, four sons, Patrick and Hosea Brown of Houston, Shakespeare Brown of Clute and Harry Brown of Van Vleck, four sisters, Mrs. Alzena and Matilda Woodard of Cedar Lake, Mrs. L. B. Bonner of Bay City and Mrs. Mary Wesley of Sweeny, 46 grands, 26 great-grands, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Lydia Woodard Brown

August 2, 1864 - August 14, 1956

Sister Lydia Brown, daughter of Henry and Lizzie Woodard was born in Matagorda County, Cedar Lake, Texas, August 2, 1864.

At an early age Sister Brown joined Bethlehem Christian Church and remained in this Church until she departed this life Tuesday, August 14, 1956.

Sister Brown was married to William R. Brown and to this union seven children were born, of which six survive.

During recent years she moved to Houston, Texas to live with her children.

Sister Brown leaves to survived her six children, Many grand-children and great-grandchildren, one brother, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Shakespeare was born March 4, 1930 to Shakespeare and Lucy Merchant Brown, Sr. in the Cedar Lake Community. As an Entrepreneur, he pursued his dream and worked as a carpenter. His passion in life was fishing and playing dominoes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Frankie Thompson Brown and 4 sisters, Alzenia Brown, Angeline Edison, Cora Sibley and Victoria Brown.

Shakespeare Brown, Sr.

October 30, 1899 – April 21, 1977

Born on October 30, 1899 at Cedar Lake, Matagorda County, Texas to Lydia and William R. Brown a baby boy named Shakespeare.

Shakespeare attended Public School and grew to manhood in the Cedar Lake Community.

At an early age he confessed Christ and was baptized by the late Elder Henry Woodard becoming a dependable and loyal member until death.

In 1922, Shakespeare was united in Holy Matrimony to Miss Lucy Merchant. To this union thirteen children were born, one of which preceded him in death.

In 1960, Shakespeare was ordained as a deacon of Bethlehem Christian Church under the pastorage of Rev. Berkley Moore, and in 1968 he was installed as Elder of the Church under the pastorage of Rev. Lloyd Brown where he served faithfully until death. He was a Sunday School teacher and the Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School. He was a Scout Master of Troop 815, a member of the American Woodmen Camp #243 and a Gulf Coast Lodge #272, Bay City, Texas.

He departed this life Thursday, April 21, 1977 at 6:00 A.M. in the Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas. He leaves to mourn his passing a loving wife, Mrs. Lucy Brown, eight daughters, Mrs. Lola McCanick and Mrs. Angeline Edison of Freeport, Mrs. Flora Hunt of Houston, Mrs. Cora Sibley, Mrs. Cleopatra Thomas, Mrs. Luberta Brown, Mrs. Lydia Daily and Mrs. Victoria Brown all of Cedar Lake, four sons, Patrick Brown and Hosea Brown of Houston, Shakespeare Brown, Jr. of Clute and Harry Brown of Van Vleck, one adopted daughter, Miss Lucy Brown of Cedar Lake, three brothers, Mr. Rayfield Brown of Brazoria, Mr. James Brown of Cedar Lake, and Mr. Arthur K. Mary Elain Green Bryant
August 5, 1955 - October 27, 2005

On August 5, 1955, a girl was born to Roosevelt Green, Sr. and Carrie Woodard Green in Bay City, Texas, whom they named Mary Elain Green.

She united with First Berean Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late R. A. Banks at an early age. She served faithfully as an active member. She grew up in the Cedar Lane community with her siblings, family, friends. She graduated in 1973 from Van Vleck High School in Van Vleck, Texas and continued her education at Brazosport College in Lake Jackson, Texas and received an Associate of Applied Science degree.

Mary was preceded in death by her daughter Ashley Faye Bryant; brother Roosevelt Green, Jr.; and step-daughter Renee Bryant.

She is survived by her husband, William C. Bryant, Sr.; daughter Monalisa Green Bryant; stepson William C. Eula Mae Carter

Funeral services for Mrs. Eula Mae Carter, 68, of Cedar Lake, will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998 at the Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, Rev. K. W. Bree, her nephew, officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake. Visitation will be Friday until 9 p. m. in the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home chapel, and Saturday from 1 until 2 p. m. at the church.

Carter was born in Matagorda County, Saturday, Jan. 18, 1930, to Luberta Woodard Murphy and Benjamin Tone, and died Saturday, Aug. 15 at Vencor Hospital in Pasadena, TX. She was a faithful member of Bethlehem Christian Church where she served dutifully as an usher.

Carter is survived by five daughters and three sons-in-law, Nettie Lee Bivens and V. L. of Brazoria, Luberta Bell and Raymond of Sweeny, Archiver Carter, Rose Mary Jackson and Alvin all of Cedar Lake, and Marva Powell of Cedar Lane; and two sons and daughter-in-law, Donald Ray Carter and Felecia of Missouri City, and Willie “Peter” Carter, Jr. of Cedar Lake; god-daughter, Sandra Murphy Scott of Houston; 20 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; one brother, Benjamin Tone, Jr.; two aunts, Mary Wilson of Houston, and Carrie Green of Cedar Lane; a great aunt, Rosie Lee Griggs of Cedar Lane; a sister-in-law, Eliza Wrenn and Rev. Besides her parents, Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Carter, Sr.; a daughter, Willie Mae Johnson; and a sister, Pearlie Bree.

Ronnie Earl Carter
July 17, 1970 - October 27, 2015

Funeral services for Ronnie Earl Carter, 45, of Cedar Lake, Texas, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 7, 2015, at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, Texas, with the Rev. K.W. Bree, eulogist.

Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery.

Visitation and guest book register will be held from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m., Friday, Novemer 6, 2015, at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel in Bay City, Texas.

He was born in Bay City, Texas, July 17, 1970, and passed away, October 27, 2015, at Brazosport Regional Medical Center in Lake Jackson, Texas.

Among his survivors are his father, Lexus Bell, and a host of siblings. Also several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a family of many friends, who knew him as ‘Hood.’

He was preceded in death by his mother, Willie Mae Carter.

Willie Carter

Funeral services for William Carter, 70, of Bay City are scheduled for 11 a. m. Saturday at Bethlehem Christian Church of Cedar Lake with the Rev. K. W. Bree officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

Visitation will be until 9 p. m. Friday at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home chapel in Bay City.

Mr. Carter was born Oct. 22, 1923, in Cedar Lake to George and Nettie Lee Ward Carter and died Feb. 26, 1994, in Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

He was a resident of the Cedar Lake Community.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Eula Mae Carter of Cedar Lake; six daughters and three sons-in-law, Nettie Lee and U. L. Bivens of Brazoria, Luberta Carter of Sweeny, Willie Mae Johnson of Freeport and Archivera Carter, Marvil and John Powell and Rosa Mary and Alvin Jackson, all of Cedar Lake; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Felicia Ray of Missouri City and Willie Carter Jr. of Cedar Lake; a sister and brother-in-law, the Rev. James and Eliza Wrenn of Galveston; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Christopher Carter of Cedar Lake and Robert and Charlene Carter and Monroe and Doris Carter, all of Hitchcock; 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers are U. L. Bivens, Alvin Jackson, Jerome Robinson, Elroy Thompson, Robert Ward, James Wright, George Spencer and Emanuel Bree.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Nettie Lee Ward Carter.

Honorary pallbearers are his sons, grandsons and friends.
